RF. “A Royal Tradition BROKEN!” — King Charles Makes Unprecedented Change to Remembrance Sunday 2025 Ceremony, Leaving Even William and Kate Stunned

The Royal Family joined leaders, veterans, and members of the public at the annual National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph in London, honouring those who lost their lives in conflict. The commemorations, held each year on the closest Sunday to 11 November, are a central part of Remembrance Day events across the United Kingdom.

King Charles III Leads the Ceremony at the Cenotaph

King Charles III, dressed in a field marshal uniform and ceremonial frock coat, led the nation in the traditional two-minute silence. The monarch approached the Cenotaph shortly before 11am, saluted, and stood in silence as the bells of Big Ben marked the hour. After the silence, a gun salute signalled the end of the moment of reflection, followed by the Last Post performed by Buglers of the Royal Marines.

The King then placed a wreath at the Cenotaph, continuing a tradition observed by British monarchs for more than a century. The annual ceremony serves as a solemn tribute to service personnel who lost their lives in the First World War, the Second World War, and later operations.

Prince William and Senior Royals Pay Tribute

Following the King, the Prince of Wales laid a wreath while wearing his Royal Air Force uniform in the rank of wing commander, accompanied by a greatcoat, poppy, and ceremonial sword. The Duke of Edinburgh also took part in the wreath-laying segment of the service.

From the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office balcony, Queen Camilla and Catherine, Princess of Wales, both dressed in black as a traditional sign of respect, observed the ceremony and joined in singing the national anthem.

Members of the extended Royal Family, including the Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke of Kent, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, attended from adjoining balconies. The Duchess of Edinburgh appeared visibly moved as she watched the proceedings, while the Duke of Kent offered a formal salute.

Prime Ministers and Political Leaders in Attendance

Former and current political leaders gathered at the Cenotaph, reflecting the non-partisan nature of Remembrance Day. Current and former prime ministers, including Sir Keir Starmer, David Cameron, Tony Blair, and Gordon Brown, stood before the Cenotaph to lay wreaths.

Alongside them, senior government officials and party leaders placed their own tributes. After the official delegation departed, thousands of veterans began their traditional march-past through Whitehall.

Veterans Lead a Large National March-Past

Approximately 10,000 veterans were expected to take part in the Royal British Legion’s march-past, accompanied by around 20 surviving veterans of the Second World War. The large turnout demonstrated the continuing significance of Remembrance Day in the national consciousness. Services and events were held in communities across the United Kingdom to honour those who served.

This year’s Armistice period also marked the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, prompting special commemorative activities throughout the country. Ahead of the two-minute silence, military bands performed well-known patriotic pieces, including “Rule Britannia,” as crowds gathered along Whitehall.

Festival of Remembrance: A Night of Reflection and Music

The evening before the Cenotaph ceremony, members of the Royal Family attended the Royal British Legion’s Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. The event featured performances by the Central Band of the RAF, the RAF Squadronaires, and the Band of HM Royal Marines.

Musicians and performers such as Sir Rod Stewart, Sam Ryder, and Keala Settle also took part in the programme, which included tributes to service personnel and their families.

King Charles, who serves as patron of the Royal British Legion, received three cheers from members of the Armed Forces during the event. The Prince and Princess of Wales attended with their eldest son, Prince George, who was present at the Festival of Remembrance for the first time.

Prime Minister’s Message for Remembrance Sunday

Ahead of the ceremony, the Prime Minister released a public message highlighting the national importance of Remembrance Sunday. He paid tribute to the courage of those who served in the world wars and in subsequent military operations. The statement also emphasised the importance of remembering both the sacrifice of earlier generations and the role of those who continue to serve today.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the responsibility to protect the values upheld by previous service personnel remains essential. He also highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting veterans and their families.

Stories of Centenarian Veterans

Among the thousands of participants in the march-past were several centenarian veterans, each representing extraordinary chapters of living history.

Donald Poole, aged 101 and a former Royal Army Ordnance Corps technician, shared his reflections on being able to honour those who served. During the Second World War, he handled defective explosives and enemy ammunition. He spent time in India, where he witnessed widespread celebrations at the announcement of the war’s end in 1945. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to recognise the service of others, including civilian emergency workers who contributed significantly during wartime.

Another participant, Sid Machin, also 101, is one of the last surviving “Chindits,” a special forces group that operated in the Burma campaign. As a teenager, he was deployed behind enemy lines as part of a glider operation. Speaking before the ceremony, he reflected on the strong bond among service members and the sense of duty that defined their experience.

Both men represented a generation whose service played an integral role in shaping today’s United Kingdom.

A Day Marked by Reflection and National Unity

The Remembrance Sunday ceremony remains one of the most historic and solemn events in the national calendar. Each year, it unites the Royal Family, political leaders, veterans, and members of the public in honouring those who served in wartime and in ongoing military operations.

As thousands gathered in London and across the country, this year’s events continued the tradition of ensuring that the contributions of past and present service personnel are remembered with dignity, gratitude, and respect.
