RF. King Charles Reportedly Made a ‘Huge Mistake’ Welcoming Harry Back — and It Could Cost Him His Relationship with William

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are heading back to Britain with their children, but their return could create a problem far bigger than finding a home. Behind the scenes, the Sussexes’ growing closeness to King Charles III is raising questions about what happens to his relationship with Prince William.

The Sussexes’ reported return marks a striking change from Meghan’s previous concerns about raising her children in the UK. In a 2022 interview with The Cut, Meghan described the intense media attention that could surround ordinary family life if Prince Archie attended school in Britain.

 

Meghan Once Said Life in Britain Would Be Difficult for Archie

 

She said she would not be able to handle everyday school drop-offs and pickups without a royal photo call and a press pen of about 40 photographers.

“Sorry, I have a problem with that. That doesn’t make me obsessed with privacy. That makes me a strong and good parent protecting my child,” she said. Now, Harry and Meghan are preparing to bring Archie and Princess Lilibet back to the country for an extended period, with the children expected to attend school there.

The move therefore comes with a very different calculation for the family — and one that places them much closer to the royal family they left behind.

 

Charles Was Reportedly Welcoming to the Idea

 

On August 19, 2026, CNN reported that King Charles had learned of the relocation plans only the preceding Sunday. The plans were reportedly not discussed during Harry and Meghan’s July family visit to Britain. Even so, Charles was said to welcome the prospect of seeing more of his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren.

The King reportedly welcomes the opportunity to see more of the Sussex family “in a private and personal capacity.” That distinction is important because the reported move does not mean Harry and Meghan are returning as working royals.

Instead, the family is expected to establish a private home in Britain while maintaining their lives outside the institution. The reported move also comes only weeks after Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet reunited with Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove on July 10 — their first meeting as a family in four years.

But even before the Sussexes had packed their bags, there were reportedly concerns about what their return could mean for the monarchy.

 

Royal Circles Were Already Worried About Their Return

 

A Daily Mail report highlighted unease in royal circles over the Sussexes living closer to working members of the Royal Family. The concern was that almost everything Harry and Meghan do could be examined for signs of a possible return to public life.

Sources reportedly insisted that the couple would not undertake royal duties, with the King said to be “absolutely adamant” about that point. Charles’ primary concern, according to a friend quoted in the report, was protecting what is right for the monarchy and, above all, his relationship with William.

The Waleses are working royals and future monarchs, while Harry and Meghan are not. Because of that, William’s feelings were reportedly expected to be respected. Another concern was that greater proximity to the monarchy could become a “backdoor entry to public life” or help strengthen the Sussexes’ commercial credentials.

And William’s position appeared particularly clear. The Daily Mail report said he currently has “no desire whatsoever” to reconcile with Harry, while he was holidaying with his family and the King at Balmoral.

That tension sets the stage for the question now hanging over Charles’ decision to welcome Harry back into his orbit.

 

Harry’s Return Could Put Charles in an Awkward Position

 

Page Six has now taken that concern a step further, reporting that Harry’s return could drive a wedge between Charles and William. Royal reporter Tom Sykes told Page Six that the move will create “huge challenges for William” as he works out how to respond to Harry and Meghan’s return.

“William is gonna have to figure out how he is going to respond to this,” Sykes said, arguing that it won’t be “sustainable” for William to continue refusing to see or speak to his younger brother.

The problem, according to Sykes, is that Harry’s return could force William to deal with situations involving his brother that he has so far been able to avoid. “What is going to happen if Charles invites Harry to join the royal family for Christmas? What is going to happen if Harry wants to attend the Remembrance Day celebrations?” Sykes wondered.

“What is going to happen if his father endorses Harry by appearing in public shoulder to shoulder with him? It’s a huge succession of challenges for William.”

In other words, the issue may not simply be whether Harry and William reconcile privately. If Charles chooses to include Harry in family occasions, William could increasingly have to confront the relationship in public, even if he remains unwilling to repair it in private.

 

The Invictus Games Could Make Things Even More Complicated

 

Sykes also believes Harry’s return could have an important connection to the future of the Invictus Games. The Duke of Sussex founded the international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick military personnel, but Sykes claimed the organization is facing serious fundraising problems.

“I think the other thing that this is clearly also about is getting the King to support Invictus Games, which are in serious trouble with their fundraising,” Sykes claimed.

The royal reporter suggested that Harry could benefit enormously if Charles became publicly associated with the event.

“But now, if Harry is able to very rapidly re-establish proximity to the King, and is able to deliver the King as a guest at Invictus Games, or even better, is able to deliver the King as the dignitary opening the Invictus Games, then I think that you will suddenly see sponsors flocking towards that.”

For Harry, Sykes believes such an outcome could be a major win. For Charles, however, the royal reporter sees it very differently. Sykes would see this as “a huge victory” for Harry and “a huge mistake” for Charles.

 

Why Sykes Calls Charles’ Decision ‘Dangerous’

 

Sykes went even further when discussing the Sussexes’ return to Britain. “These two are incredibly unpopular,” Sykes said, referring to Harry and Meghan. “Now here they are coming back with a tail between their legs.”

The royal reporter viewed the move as an admission that Harry and Meghan’s life in the United States had not gone according to plan. “I think if there was another hundred-million-dollar deal on the table, they wouldn’t be rushing home,” Sykes said.

Then came the warning that could make Charles’ decision to welcome Harry back considerably more uncomfortable. “And I think ultimately it’s a very dangerous situation that Charles has allowed himself to be manipulated into welcoming them home because this would not be happening without the King’s endorsement.”

There is a reason the latest development is possible at all. Harry and Charles have been gradually repairing their relationship after years of estrangement.

 

Charles and Harry Have Been Slowly Rebuilding Their Relationship

 

The father and son had already met privately during Harry’s September 2025 visit to Britain, when they spent time together at Clarence House. Then came the July reunion at Highgrove, where Charles and Camilla welcomed Harry, Meghan and their two children for what Buckingham Palace described as a “private family occasion.”

The meeting was significant because Charles had not seen Archie and Lilibet in person for more than four years. It also marked Meghan’s first return to Britain with Harry since September 2022, when they attended Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.

But the reunion did not include William. During the Sussexes’ visit, William was in Windsor playing in a charity polo match while his father spent time with Harry and the rest of the Sussex family.

There were reportedly no plans for the brothers to meet. The continued separation underscored the limits of the reconciliation: Charles may be moving closer to Harry, but William has not followed him there. While Harry’s family relationships are at the center of the royal drama, Meghan could have a professional reason to spend more time in Britain.

 

Meghan May Have Her Own Reason to Return

 

The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Meghan is in advanced discussions to return to acting in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen. The role is reportedly being written for the show’s unannounced third season, although it remains unclear how many episodes Meghan would appear in.

The series shoots in the UK, making the potential role particularly notable as the Sussexes prepare to relocate there with their children. Meghan reportedly met Ritchie through mutual acquaintances. The Gentlemen Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on September 3, while additional details about Meghan’s potential role have not been announced.

Netflix did not immediately respond to The Hollywood Reporter’s request for comment. If the deal comes together, Meghan’s return would therefore involve more than family life in Britain. She could also be returning to the UK entertainment scene at the same time.

And then there is the financial problem waiting for Harry as his family prepares for the move.

 

Harry Is Also Heading Home With a Huge Legal Bill

 

The BBC reported that Harry and six other public figures face paying up to £34.5 million to Associated Newspapers Limited after a High Court judge imposed an exceptional order for legal costs following their failed privacy case against the publisher of the Daily Mail.

The seven claimants, including Sir Elton John and Liz Hurley, were ordered to make an initial payment of £9.54 million by the following Friday. The judge ruled that the case was unusual because the claimants could be required to pay substantially more than the costs previously agreed before trial.

On July 7, Judge Mr. Justice Nicklin dismissed the claims of unlawful information-gathering, which Associated Newspapers had denied. Harry and the other claimants have until October 2 to attempt to launch an appeal.

The group had insurance covering up to £16.2 million of Associated Newspapers’ costs if they lost the case. However, Friday’s ruling means the publisher could seek to recover as much as £34.5 million of the costs it said it incurred defending itself.

That leaves the Duke and the other claimants facing a potential additional bill of around £18 million beyond the insured amount. Justice Nicklin said, “I regard a claim for costs in excess of £34 million as, on its face, excessive and as giving rise to real concerns as to whether all of the costs now claimed by Associated were reasonably incurred and are reasonable in amount.”

He nevertheless said he had “decided not to impose a ceiling on Associated’s recoverable costs”, explaining that doing so could be unfair and arbitrary.

The judge also criticized the way serious allegations were handled during the case. He said it was “striking” that “not a single allegation of serious wrongdoing was voluntarily withdrawn” by the seven claimants.

“That matters. Serious allegations of criminality or grave impropriety cannot properly be left hanging over individuals in that way.” He added, “If a party no longer advances such an allegation, or no longer has a proper evidential basis for advancing it, the allegation should be withdrawn clearly and in terms.”

“The claimants’ failure to do so was not ordinary forensic judgment. It was not a proper or disciplined way to deal with serious allegations. It was unreasonable to a high degree.”

Associated Newspapers described the decision as “a devastating critique of an attempt to destroy a newspaper and the reputations of its journalists, editors and executives.”

The ruling came only days after Harry and Meghan Markle announced their plans to return to Britain, with Archie and Lilibet expected to begin school there in September. Harry had personally attended the privacy trial, flying from the United States to give evidence.

 

Harry’s Side Has Not Backed Down

 

Dozens of people also testified during the proceedings, including current and former Associated Newspapers journalists and executives who denied illegal activity. Sir Simon Hughes, one of the other claimants, told the BBC he was disappointed with the decision.

“I am now taking the time necessary to consider both the substantive and the costs judgment and whether to pursue appeals against decisions in either judgment or both,” he said.

Harry and Baroness Lawrence also reportedly issued a joint statement following the judge’s ruling last month. “We came to court seeking justice and accountability. But we have received neither.”

“It is a complete and obvious whitewash, but sadly not altogether unexpected”, the pair added.

The legal fight is not necessarily over.

While Harry sorts the legal issue, you would recall that reconciliation with his family is something Harry has wanted for a while now. Speaking to BBC News in an interview from May 2025 and recorded after the loss of his legal appeal over royal security, the Duke of Sussex expressed a mix of sadness, urgency, and clarity about his future.

“I would love reconciliation with my family,” he said. “There’s no point continuing to fight anymore. As I said, life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has. You know, he won’t speak to me because of this security stuff. But it would be nice to reconcile.”

He added, “If they don’t want that, that’s entirely up to them.”

The interview came shortly after a U.K. court dismissed his attempt to overturn the government’s decision to downgrade his police protection when he is in Britain. Harry had argued that the ruling subjected him to “unjustified and inferior treatment.” However, on May 2, 2025, the Court of Appeal upheld the decision, rejecting his claim.

During his conversation with BBC’s Neda Torfić, Harry said he was, “Obviously, pretty gutted about the decision.” The prince also shared that he was unable to return to the United Kingdom with his wife and children. “We thought it was going to go our way, but it certainly hasn’t,” he shared.

At the time, the Duke added he only returned to the U.K. for funerals, court hearings, and the occasional charity event.

“I put myself at risk for that, but I will continue on with a life of public service,” he said. “I can’t see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the U.K. at this point. And the things that they’re going to miss is—well, everything. [sic]”

The tension between Harry and the royal institution appeared to hinge almost solely on his loss of security. “Just because you spoke there about forgiveness—it sounds like the last step to repairing relations with your family is the security issue, by what you said there,” Torfić noted.

“One hundred percent,” Harry replied. “Whatever noise has been created, whatever stories have been written—this has always been the sticking point.” He went on to explain how the decision to remove his protection in 2020 stunned him.

“God forbid anything should happen. And I don’t regret that at all,” he said of his decision to step away from royal duties. “I thought with all the disagreements and all of the chaos that’s happening, the one thing that I could rely on is my family keeping me safe.”

But instead, he said, “Not only did they decide to remove my security in the U.K., but they also signaled to every single government around the world not to protect us.” Harry shared that the effect of the ruling was deeply personal.

Reflecting on the rift, Harry acknowledged that some wounds may never fully heal, saying, “Of course, some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book. Of course, they will never forgive me for lots of things.” Still, he expressed, “It would be nice to reconcile.”
