A photo of a lonely German Shepherd with a tattered stuffed animal in her mouth touched thousands of hearts. Now she has a bed, medical care and a foster family.
A Heartbreaking Photo
The image showed a German Shepherd walking alone on the streets of Detroit, Michigan, holding a small stuffed toy in her mouth. Neighbors said she had become homeless after her owner died. Locals thought she was a male and called her “Nicholas,” but the rescuers who found her soon realized she was a female and renamed her Nikki.
A neighbor had been feeding her while she roamed, and the photo spread rapidly on social media. “All she had left was the stuffy from her owner she was carrying around,” the Almost Home Animal Rescue wrote on Facebook, comparing her to Annie, the character in the musical who clings to a locket from her parents.
A Community Comes Together
Several groups worked together to find and catch her. South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery, a nonprofit that traps stray dogs, set up the capture. It Is Pawzable Dog Training and Sugar Mutts Dog Grooming joined the effort, along with Almost Home Animal Rescue in West Bloomfield and several volunteers.

Katrina Weaver, who owns It Is Pawzable, assessed Nikki after she was caught. “Everybody comes together and works as a team, which is so amazing,” she told FOX 2 Detroit. Dandy Acres Animal Shelter checked her over and Sugar Mutts gave her a groom.
Medical Care and Heartworm
Nikki had heartworm, a mosquito-borne parasite that can damage a dog’s heart and lungs, and she needed about four weeks of treatment. While she recovered, she rested, took medication and went on short leash walks. Almost Home covered the veterinary costs, and the rescue invited the public to help with donations.
Through it all, Nikki still has her beloved stuffed toy by her side.

From Street to Foster Home
Nikki moved into a foster home in Metro Detroit, and the family has said they plan to adopt her. Almost Home called her a “famous celebrity dog” and said it was thrilled she was safe and off the streets.
When a Pet Loses Its Person
When an owner dies suddenly, pets may be left without anyone to care for them. Animal welfare groups suggest a few simple steps:
- Plan ahead. Name a trusted friend or relative who will care for your pet if you can’t.
- Keep records current. Make sure microchip details and vet records include a backup contact.
- Put it in writing. A pet trust or a clause in your will can help ensure your pet’s care.
- Help strays safely. If you see a wandering dog, call a local rescue or animal control rather than chasing it.
