Adopting a dog with special needs isn’t the right choice for every household, but for the right family it can be deeply rewarding. Lunita’s story shows both sides: a difficult start, a rescue that took people across borders, and a final chapter filled with love. This is her story as shared by the people who cared for her, and it includes the sad news that she has passed away.
Left on a Street in Salta
Lunita was a medium-sized dog with a disability who was abandoned on a street in Salta, Argentina, in the early morning. Beside her was a note with her name, her age and a brief explanation that the owner couldn’t keep her. No food or water had been left, and the note said little else.
She was found lying on the sidewalk, still attached to a worn-out wheelchair that helped her move. An employee at a nearby dog-grooming business noticed her and called the rescue group LUBA Salta, and two volunteers rushed to pick her up.
From Shelter to Foster Home
Lunita was taken to a shelter and then placed in a foster home while the rescue group posted her story online, hoping to find someone to adopt her. For a while, nothing happened. Then a family in the United States showed interest, and a fundraiser was launched to cover her trip.
A Difficult First Home
According to the rescue’s updates, the first adoption didn’t go well. Her new family wasn’t prepared to meet the demands of caring for a dog with mobility problems, and Lunita developed serious skin and urinary health problems along the way. She was underweight and needed extensive veterinary treatment. Another adoptive family then took her in, and with patient medical care she recovered.
A Happy Chapter
With her new family and her health restored, Lunita experienced a lot of firsts. She saw snow for the first time, traveled, made new friends and celebrated birthdays. On her 11th birthday, friends and other dogs gathered to celebrate with her, and she enjoyed a special dog-friendly cake.
Saying Goodbye
Shortly after that celebration, Lunita became sick and was admitted to intensive care. Despite the efforts of her veterinarians, her breathing didn’t improve, and her family made the difficult decision to let her go. She died surrounded by the people who loved her.
Her owner wrote that Lunita changed her life forever. Her story is remembered as one of perseverance, and of a final chapter that was truly happy.
What the Reports Don’t Tell Us
Some details are unknown or unverified:
- The reports don’t say who abandoned Lunita or why, beyond the note’s message that the owner couldn’t keep her.
- The account comes from posts by Lunita’s rescuers and family on social media, and the specifics of her health problems haven’t been independently confirmed.
- The reports don’t describe the full circumstances of her first adoption, so it would be unfair to judge it without more information.
Caring for a Dog With Special Needs
Dogs with mobility problems can live long, joyful lives, but they usually need extra attention. Veterinarians and rescue groups commonly advise:
- Talk to a vet before adopting. Ask about the dog’s condition and expected care needs.
- Prepare for daily routines. Dogs with limited mobility may need help with toileting, cleaning and repositioning to protect their skin.
- Use the right equipment. A well-fitted dog wheelchair can help many dogs stay active, and an orthopedic dog bed adds comfort. Dog diapers and washable pads can help with hygiene.
- Watch for health changes. Regular checkups and quick attention to skin, urinary or breathing changes are important.
- Plan for costs. Pet insurance can help with vet bills, but check what it covers.
- Ask rescues for support. Many rescue groups offer guidance to adopters of special-needs dogs.
