#PART 1 In the summer of 1938, one hundred armed members of the Ku Klux Klan surrounded an isolated ranch in the Mississippi Delta, carrying rifles, burning torches, and enough rope to make their intentions unmistakable.
Their target was a 300-pound Black landowner who walked
with a painful limp and spoke so softly that most people
considered him harmless. They expected him to beg for mercy.
They expected to take his land before sunrise.
What they didn’t know was that the frightened man
standing on the porch had once been the deadliest
marksman in the South—and some of the men preparing to
murder him had learned how to shoot from him.
His name was Elijah Carter,
although everyone in the nearby town of Blackwater called him Big Eli.
At six feet four inches tall, he was a mountain of a man,
with broad shoulders, enormous hands,
and a right leg that dragged slightly whenever he walked.
For fifteen years,
he had quietly cultivated twenty acres of fertile cotton fields,
raised chickens, and kept mostly to himself.
Whenever white townspeople mocked his size or questioned why a Black man owned such valuable property,
Elijah lowered his eyes and answered respectfully.
Nobody suspected that his apparent weakness was
something he had spent two decades carefully perfecting.
On an unusually hot August evening,
Elijah was collecting eggs when he noticed an orange glow beyond the cypress trees.
At first, he thought someone had started a fire near the creek.
Then a second flame appeared, followed by a third.
Within minutes, the entire tree line flickered with burning torches.
White-robed figures emerged from the darkness,
their rifles catching the firelight.
Elijah counted silently as they spread across his property.
Forty. Sixty. Eighty. By the time the last group appeared,
he knew there were approximately one hundred men surrounding his home.
“ELIJAH CARTER!” a voice thundered from the darkness.
“COME OUT WHERE WE CAN SEE YOU!”
Elijah recognized the voice immediately.
It belonged to Sheriff Thomas Whitfield,
the same man who had smiled at him outside the courthouse only three days earlier.
Now the sheriff stood among the Klansmen,
his silver badge pinned directly over his white robe.
Beside him was Reverend Samuel Brooks,
a respected church leader whose sermons filled the town chapel every Sunday.
Neither man bothered hiding his face.
They were so certain of their power that anonymity seemed unnecessary.
Elijah slowly approached his porch,
allowing his limp to become noticeably worse.
He climbed the steps with exaggerated difficulty,
gripping the railing as though his enormous body could barely support its own weight.
When he turned toward the armed crowd, his hands were already raised.
“Please, gentlemen,” he said, his voice shaking.
“I don’t want no trouble.” Laughter erupted across the yard.
“Look at him!” somebody shouted. “Big as a barn and scared as a rabbit!”
Deputy Richard Hayes stepped forward, swinging a length of rope in his hand.
“You know why we’re here, Carter.
Twenty acres of the finest farmland in this county,
and you think you’re entitled to own it?
That land belongs in respectable hands.” Elijah stared at the ground.
“I bought it legally, sir. Worked fifteen years paying for every acre.”
“Nobody cares what your papers say!” Hayes snapped.
The deputy reached for his pistol, but Sheriff Whitfield raised a hand,
signaling him to wait.
The sheriff had another plan, one that might make him considerably richer.
“There’s a simple way to settle this,” Whitfield announced.
“You sign over the property, including the house and everything on it,
and perhaps we’ll let you leave Mississippi alive.”
Elijah’s shoulders trembled.
He looked from the sheriff to the dozens of rifles pointed toward his porch.
“What if I sign everything over tomorrow morning?” he asked desperately.
“You can have the farm, the animals, everything.
Just let me catch the northbound train. I swear I’ll never come back.”
The offer changed the atmosphere immediately.
Several men lowered their weapons.
Twenty acres of rich Mississippi soil represented a small fortune,
and the possibility of claiming it without a prolonged confrontation appealed to the sheriff.
Reverend Brooks stepped forward, smoothing the front of his robe.
“Perhaps this unfortunate man has finally learned his place,” he declared.
“There is no need for unnecessary bloodshed if he willingly surrenders.”
Deputy Hayes looked furious.
He had come expecting violence, not paperwork.
But the sheriff silenced him with a sharp glance.
“At sunrise,” Whitfield announced.
“We’ll return to collect the signed documents.
You’d better have them ready, Carter. And don’t think about escaping.
Every road out of this county is being watched.”
Elijah nodded repeatedly. “Yes, sir. Thank you, sir. I’ll be ready.”
The Klansmen gradually withdrew toward the trees,
laughing and congratulating themselves.
Their torches disappeared one by one, leaving the ranch in darkness.
Elijah remained motionless on the porch until the last
wagon had disappeared down the road.
Then something extraordinary happened. The trembling stopped.
His shoulders straightened. His breathing became steady.
Even his movements changed,
losing the exaggerated clumsiness he had displayed moments earlier.
The helpless giant who had begged for mercy seemed to vanish.
Elijah stepped inside, locked the door, and walked directly to his bedroom.
Beside his bed, three wooden floorboards concealed a narrow compartment.
He lifted them carefully,
revealing a collection of weapons wrapped in protective cloth.
There was a Springfield military rifle, three Colt pistols,
boxes of ammunition,
and a worn leather belt bearing the marks of a much different life.
For several seconds, Elijah stared at the rifle. Twenty years earlier,
during World War I, he had trained soldiers in precision marksmanship.
His extraordinary shooting ability had earned him a
reputation that spread quietly through military camps.
Some men claimed he could strike targets that
experienced shooters could barely see.
Others remembered his almost frightening patience,
his ability to remain completely calm while everyone around him panicked.
But after the war, his accomplishments had been pushed into obscurity.
The men who had praised his skills overseas returned to
a country where they refused to acknowledge a Black man’s superiority.
Some even joined the very organization now threatening his life.
Elijah remembered several voices from the mob. He had trained those men.
And he knew exactly how they behaved when frightened.
Suddenly, five quiet knocks sounded at the back door.
Elijah reached for a pistol before recognizing the familiar pattern.
Standing outside was seventeen-year-old Caleb Turner,
the son of a neighboring farmworker.
The boy slipped inside, breathing heavily. “Mr.
Elijah, they’re lying to you,” Caleb whispered.
“I heard Deputy Hayes talking near Miller’s Creek.
They ain’t waiting until sunrise.
They’re coming back around three in the morning.
They’re planning to burn your house while you’re sleeping.”
Elijah showed no surprise. “I figured as much,” he replied.
Caleb noticed the weapons spread across the bed. His eyes widened.
“Where did you get all those guns?”
Elijah picked up the old Springfield rifle and examined its wooden stock.
“From a time when people knew my name for a different reason.”
The boy swallowed. “You’re going to fight all of them?”
Elijah looked toward the darkened window.
“I spent twenty years letting those men believe I was stupid,
frightened, and too heavy to defend myself. They laughed at my limp.
They laughed at my size.
They never once wondered why a man who could barely walk
still managed to survive everything they threw at him.”
He paused, carefully setting the rifle on the table.
“They forgot something, Caleb.
The men who taught them how to shoot might know a little more than they do.”
Elijah ordered the boy to return home and stay away from the ranch.
Caleb protested, insisting he could help,
but the older man’s expression hardened. “Your mother needs you alive.
Don’t make her bury her only son because of me.”
After Caleb reluctantly departed,
Elijah extinguished the lamp and began preparing for the night.
He knew every corner of his house, every creaking floorboard,
every stretch of open ground between the porch and the distant trees.
He had spent fifteen years learning the land,
never imagining he might one day need that knowledge to protect his own life.
At 2:47 a. m. , movement appeared near the western fence.
Thirty white-robed figures crept through the cotton fields.
More emerged near the barn. Their torches were extinguished now,
but their pale clothing stood out against the dark vegetation.
Elijah watched from an upstairs window.
Then he heard Deputy Hayes whisper, “Spread out.
That fat fool won’t even know we’re here until the house is burning.”
A second man laughed. “Sheriff says we can finish him before breakfast.”
Elijah’s face remained expressionless.
He had spent decades avoiding confrontation, swallowing insults,
and pretending not to hear threats.
Now those same men were advancing toward his home with weapons and gasoline.
One Klansman approached the fence carrying a burning match.
Another lifted his rifle toward Elijah’s bedroom window.
And then— **BANG! ** A deafening gunshot shattered the darkness.
The wooden fence post beside the leading Klansman exploded into splinters.
Men screamed and threw themselves into the dirt.
Several fired blindly toward the house. “SNIPER!” someone shouted.
“WHERE’S HE SHOOTING FROM?” Before anyone could answer,
another precise shot struck the ground beside Deputy Hayes,
sending dirt across his white robe.
The deputy stumbled backward, nearly dropping his pistol.
“THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE!” he screamed. “CARTER CAN’T SHOOT LIKE THAT!”
From the upstairs darkness,
Elijah calmly watched the chaos spreading across his fields.
Then, suddenly, he recognized a familiar figure emerging behind the sheriff.
It was a man from his military past—a man who knew
exactly what Elijah Carter could do with a rifle.
