A social media influencer has been ordered by a U.S. judge to delete photos and videos showing him posing with a great white shark and to stop posting new videos, after prosecutors said he caught the protected animal on Cape Cod. Here is what has been reported so far, and what is still only an allegation.
What Prosecutors Allege
According to a press release from the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office, content creator Christopher Stefanou, known online as “Lisharkman,” traveled to the eastern shore of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with the goal of capturing a great white shark. He is based in Long Island, New York, and has more than two million subscribers on YouTube.
Prosecutors say he caught a great white shark nicknamed “Aaron,” which had been tagged and was being closely monitored by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. They allege he used prohibited equipment, including a drone, to catch the animal, dragged it onto the beach, posed for photos and then released it.
How Authorities Found Out
Reports say officials only learned about the incident after the footage and photos were posted online. The images showed him and his crew celebrating and taking pictures with the shark before letting it go.
The Charges and the Court Order
At his arraignment, Stefanou faced charges including animal cruelty to a shark and possession of a protected species shark, among others. The judge ordered him to delete all photos and videos showing him posing with the shark and not to post additional videos.
Other conditions reported include surrendering his fishing license and staying out of Massachusetts. Bail was set at $10,000.
What This Report Doesn’t Confirm
It’s important to keep a few things in mind:
- The charges are allegations. An arraignment is an early step, and a person charged with a crime is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
- The reports don’t say how he pleaded or how the case ended, and they don’t describe the shark’s condition after its release.
- Most details come from the prosecutors’ press release and haven’t been independently verified here.
Why Great White Sharks Are Protected
The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN and is protected in U.S. waters. Wildlife agencies tag individual sharks to track where they travel and how their populations are doing, which helps with research and public safety. Experts generally warn that removing a shark from the water can stress or injure it, since sharks rely on water moving over their gills to breathe. That is why many places restrict how people may interact with them.
A Wider Pattern
The case comes as another influencer couple is facing legal action in Oman after posing for photographs while sitting on a sea turtle laying eggs. Wildlife officials around the world have repeatedly warned that chasing viral photos can harm animals and lead to prosecution.
How to Enjoy Sharks and Marine Wildlife Responsibly
- Keep your distance. Never touch, chase, drag or ride a wild marine animal.
- Follow local rules. Check regulations on protected species before any fishing trip, and get the proper fishing licence where required.
- Choose ethical operators. Book responsible shark diving tours or marine wildlife cruises that follow wildlife guidelines.
- Report violations. If you see someone harassing a protected animal, contact local wildlife or coast guard authorities.
- Respect beach warnings. Heed shark and seal warnings at beaches, and learn basic ocean safety.
Support Shark Conservation
If this story concerns you, here are ways to help:
- Support research. Compare shark conservation charities, marine wildlife donations and ocean protection organizations.
- Plan a respectful trip. Look into eco-friendly travel packages, whale and shark watching tours and travel insurance for coastal trips.
- Capture memories safely. Browse waterproof cameras, zoom lenses and binoculars for watching wildlife from a safe distance.
- Learn more. Ocean documentaries and marine biology books make great introductions.
