At precisely 8:27 a.m., Gizmo, born in January 2025, teetered on a perch next to the sprawling nest he’d called home for months. With the world watching via the live feed operated by Friends of Big Bear Valley, the eaglet hesitated, fluttering nervously before making a bold, almost reckless dip into the California sky. “Gizmo did it!” Friends of Big Bear Valley exclaimed on their Facebook page, capturing the exhilaration of the moment.

But Gizmo’s maiden flight wasn’t flawless. The young eagle’s initial swoop veered dangerously close to a tangle of branches, a heart-stopping misstep that showcased both his inexperience and fearless spirit. Yet, like a true member of his storied family, Gizmo quickly recovered, soaring upward to join the ranks of his parents, Jackie and Shadow, as a symbol of resilience in the wild.

Father Shadow, ever the vigilant guardian, kept a close eye on his adventurous offspring. Perched just a few branches above Gizmo on a nearby tree, the proud patriarch seemed to offer silent reassurance as his youngest child tested the skies. Meanwhile, Gizmo’s older sister, Sunny, who fledged five days earlier on June 2 at 10:46 a.m., has already become a fan favorite, delighting viewers with her frequent flybys to check in on her parents and sibling.

The group, which has shared every triumph and tender moment of this eagle family’s journey through their nest camera, celebrated the eaglets’ bold steps into independence while acknowledging the quiet shift in the nest’s story. “The last full day in the nest for Sunny and Gizmo may have been Friday, unless they decide to return and spend the night in the days to come,” the organization shared in a statement. “They may come and go for a while, but that’s all up to them.”
