Fans of Keanu Reeves were left concerned this week after the beloved actor revealed a surprising and painful injury he sustained—not on the set of an action blockbuster, but while filming a comedy.
An Unexpected Setback for the Action Icon
Known for his fearless stunts in action-packed franchises like John Wick and The Matrix, Keanu Reeves is no stranger to physical challenges. But his latest injury came in the most unexpected way: during a lighthearted scene in a comedy film.
Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the 59-year-old actor recounted how he broke his kneecap while filming Good Fortune, a new comedy project directed by Aziz Ansari.
“Accident Got to Me”: Keanu Tells the Story
When asked by host Stephen Colbert what happened, Keanu playfully responded in a tough-guy tone, “No one got to me — accident got to me.”
Colbert, jokingly imagining an intense stunt, asked if he was jumping between buildings or dodging blades. Keanu clarified that it was far less dramatic — and much more ironic.
“No, Stephen, I was walking into the dressing room… I’ll tell it quick.”
Reeves explained that he, Aziz Ansari, and Seth Rogen were filming a scene involving a cold plunge. After exiting the plunge, Keanu began doing the “cold shuffle” — walking across a carpeted area to warm up. Unfortunately, his foot caught on a fold in the carpet.
As he demonstrated for Colbert’s audience, he mimicked how his leg gave out beneath him.
“And I spiked. Like, spiked,” he said, acting out the motion. “Just drove [my knee] into the ground.”
A Fractured Kneecap and a Whole Lot of Pain
Reeves revealed that his patella — the kneecap — cracked “like a potato chip.” At first, he didn’t realize the severity of the injury. But his knee soon began to swell and showed signs of serious trauma.
“My patella cracked like a potato chip,” he emphasized. “But I didn’t know that. Then my knee started blowing up.”
Colbert summed it up: “This was not an action film with Aziz and Rogen.”
“No, it was comedy,” Keanu laughed, adding, “Comedy is hard, man.”
Spotted Filming on Crutches
Fans may recall that back in January, Keanu was seen filming while on crutches, with an ice pack on his knee. At the time, little was known about the cause of his injury — until now.
Despite the setback, Reeves remained committed to the project and continued filming through the recovery period.
About Good Fortune: A New Direction for Aziz Ansari
The film Good Fortune is the directorial debut of Aziz Ansari, who also wrote and co-produced the film. It stars a strong comedic cast including Seth Rogen, Sandra Oh, and Keke Palmer, alongside Keanu Reeves.
While the plot details remain under wraps, the film promises to bring together an eclectic and dynamic ensemble — and, clearly, some unexpected behind-the-scenes drama.
Conclusion
Keanu Reeves’ injury serves as a reminder that even comedy can be physically demanding — especially when cold plunges and slippery carpets are involved. Thankfully, the star is recovering and continuing his work with characteristic grace and humor.
Stay tuned for updates on Good Fortune, which is expected to release in late 2025.
