Fossilized bones revealed the animal’s impressive anatomy. Ancient teeth showed that it possessed extraordinarily long canine teeth. Footprints provided clues about how it moved across prehistoric landscapes.

But bones could not show everything.

What color was its fur? How thick was its coat? What did its face look like when its mouth was closed? Did its famous saber-like teeth extend beyond its lips?

For generations, artists and paleontologists have tried to reconstruct these mysterious cats using the limited evidence available.

Then, in 2020, an extraordinary discovery emerged from the frozen ground of Siberia.

Researchers examining the remains of Ice Age animals encountered something far rarer than the usual fossilized bones: the naturally preserved body of a young saber-toothed cat.

The frozen animal belonged to Homotherium latidens, a species sometimes called a scimitar-toothed cat.

Estimated to be around 32,000 years old, the remarkably preserved cub offers scientists something they have rarely had before: a chance to study the soft tissues of an extinct saber-toothed predator.

Its fur, paws, muscles and facial features provide new clues about an animal that once lived across the Northern Hemisphere.

And perhaps most fascinating of all, the little cat may help scientists understand what these famous Ice Age predators actually looked like.

The discovery happened in 2020 while workers were searching for mammoth tusks in Siberia.

Instead of finding another piece of a mammoth, they encountered the frozen remains of a small carnivore.

According to paleontologist A.V. Lopatin and his colleagues, the specimen was eventually identified as a young Homotherium latidens.

The researchers described their findings in Scientific Reports in 2024.

The significance of the discovery is difficult to overstate.

Frozen mammoths and other large Ice Age herbivores have been recovered from the permafrost before. Their preserved tissues have helped researchers understand prehistoric animals in ways that ordinary fossils cannot.

Carnivores, however, are considerably rarer.

In a natural ecosystem, predators generally occur in smaller numbers than the animals they hunt. That means the chances of finding a complete, naturally preserved saber-toothed cat were always extremely small.

This cub therefore represents an unusual scientific treasure.

Instead of studying only the skeleton, researchers can examine physical characteristics that normally disappear long before fossilization takes place.

It had a more elongated body and relatively long limbs, giving it an appearance that was better suited to traveling across open landscapes.

Its canine teeth were also shaped differently from those of Smilodon.

The teeth of Homotherium were shorter and more flattened, with serrated edges. This is why the animal is often described as a scimitar-toothed cat.

Fossil evidence suggests that Homotherium lived across parts of Eurasia and North America.

It inhabited the Ice Age world known as the mammoth steppe, an environment dominated by open landscapes and large grazing animals.

The cat was therefore not simply a prehistoric version of a modern lion.

For decades, illustrations often showed saber-toothed cats with their large canine teeth visibly extending beyond their mouths.

That image became especially familiar through popular culture.

But scientists have increasingly questioned whether Homotherium actually looked this way.

A 2022 study suggested that Homotherium had a relatively deep muzzle and that its upper lips may have covered its saber-like canine teeth when the mouth was closed.

The Siberian cub adds another fascinating piece to this puzzle.

Its upper lip was considerably deeper than that of a modern lion cub of a similar developmental stage.

That observation may support the possibility that Homotherium had substantial lips capable of covering its developing canine teeth.

However, there is an important limitation.

The specimen is a juvenile.

It had not yet developed its characteristic adult canine teeth.

Because of this, researchers cannot use the cub alone to completely settle the question of whether adult Homotherium kept its large teeth concealed behind its lips.

An adult mummy would provide much stronger evidence.

And the discovery of this cub raises an exciting possibility: perhaps another specimen is still waiting to be found beneath the frozen ground.

A Body Built for an Ice Age Landscape

The preserved cub also reveals characteristics that researchers had previously inferred from fossil bones.

Its neck region shows substantial musculature, while its forelimbs were already relatively long and muscular.

These features are consistent with what scientists have observed in adult Homotherium fossils.

The juvenile’s jaw was also capable of opening widely.

That feature may have been important to the feeding behavior of adult animals.

Together, these observations help paint a more detailed picture of the animal.

Rather than imagining Homotherium as simply a lion with unusually long teeth, researchers can now see evidence of a predator with its own distinctive body plan.

Its proportions, limbs, jaws and feet all tell part of the story.

Even the smallest details can be informative.

The Mystery of Its Fur Color

Perhaps the most surprising discovery came from the cub’s coat.

Modern big cats often have colors and patterns that correspond, at least partly, to their environments.

Animals living in open habitats may benefit from relatively uniform coats that help them blend into their surroundings.

Because Homotherium lived in the mammoth steppe, researchers might have expected its coat to show a lighter coloration suitable for an open, grassy environment.

Instead, the frozen cub’s preserved fur appeared uniformly dark brown.

This was unexpected.

One possible explanation is that young Homotherium may have been born with darker coats that gradually became lighter as they matured.

A similar pattern has been suggested in other Ice Age cats preserved in permafrost.

There is also an important scientific caution.

Frozen animal fur can change in appearance over thousands of years, and the reddish or brown tones visible today may not perfectly represent the animal’s original coloration.

Future genetic research could potentially provide additional clues about the pigmentation of Homotherium.

The absence of obvious spots or stripes is also interesting.

Many living cats display patterns during their early development, even when their adult coats become relatively uniform.

The saber-kitten does not appear to show the same obvious patterning.

That makes its preserved coat an especially valuable subject for future research.

How Were Its Feet Different From Modern Cats?

The cub’s paws are another source of valuable information.

Researchers noticed that the paw pads associated with each toe were noticeably rounder than those of a modern lion.

The animal also lacked a distinctive carpal pad found higher on the leg of modern cats.

Scientists do not yet know exactly why these differences existed.

But such details demonstrate the value of studying a complete frozen animal.

A fossilized skeleton might show the bones of the foot, but it would not normally preserve the shape and arrangement of the soft paw pads.

The mummy therefore allows researchers to compare Homotherium with modern cats at a much finer level.

These differences reinforce an important idea:

Saber-toothed cats were not simply modern big cats with oversized canine teeth.

They were specialized animals shaped by an ancient ecosystem very different from today’s world.

Life in the Mammoth Steppe

Around 32,000 years ago, northern Eurasia looked dramatically different from the landscapes we know today.

The mammoth steppe supported enormous herds of large mammals.

Woolly mammoths, ancient horses, bison and other Ice Age animals moved across vast open regions.
