When Netflix released Death of the Pastor’s Wife, viewers expected a difficult true-crime story.
Instead, many found themselves talking about something they had not necessarily anticipated: the sermons.
The three-part documentary examines the final months of Mica Miller’s life, her troubled marriage to South Carolina pastor John-Paul Miller, and the events surrounding her death in April 2024.
Mica was 30 years old when she was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina. Her death was ruled a suicide.
Yet the circumstances surrounding the final period of her life have continued to generate public interest, particularly because of allegations she made about her marriage and the subsequent federal investigation involving her estranged husband.
Now, after watching the Netflix series, viewers are revisiting some of the pastor’s teachings about marriage and relationships.
For many, the most uncomfortable moments involve sermons in which Miller discussed what he described as a wife’s responsibilities within marriage.
One message in particular has sparked strong reactions online.
The Sermons That Left Netflix Viewers Uncomfortable
According to the documentary and reporting surrounding it, Miller preached to his congregation about sexual expectations within marriage.
In one sermon, he reportedly told members of his church that wives had “sexual obligations” to their husbands.
He also warned that if a woman did not meet her husband’s needs, Satan could place other women in front of him.
The message has become one of the most discussed portions of the documentary.
Some viewers questioned how such teachings could have been delivered publicly to a congregation without prompting more people to challenge them.
Others said they found the sermons uncomfortable enough that they would have left the church immediately.
Social-media reactions following the documentary’s release reflected the strong response.
One viewer described the sermons as “absolute garbage,” while another questioned why members of the congregation continued listening.
Another viewer called the documentary difficult to watch because of the messages presented in the sermons.
The reactions illustrate how differently people can interpret religious teachings about marriage, particularly when those teachings are viewed after learning about the difficult circumstances surrounding a particular relationship.
Who Was Mica Miller?
Mica Miller grew up in a Christian environment and remained deeply connected to the church throughout her life.
She eventually married John-Paul Miller, who served as pastor of Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
To people outside the marriage, the couple’s public religious life could look very different from the private difficulties described later by people close to Mica.
According to accounts presented in the documentary, Mica’s relationship with Miller became increasingly difficult during the final period of their marriage.
Friends and relatives have described concerns about controlling behavior and the role that religion allegedly played in the relationship.
Mica eventually decided to seek a divorce.
That decision became an important turning point in the timeline explored by the Netflix series.
The Divorce Came Shortly Before Her Death
According to reporting surrounding the case, Mica filed for divorce from Miller.
She was reportedly in the process of ending the marriage when Miller was served with divorce papers.
Just two days later, Mica was found dead at Lumber River State Park.
The timing immediately became one of the most discussed aspects of the case.
Authorities ultimately ruled her death a suicide.
But the circumstances surrounding her final weeks, combined with allegations she had previously made about her relationship, led to continued public scrutiny.
The Netflix documentary revisits that period through interviews, previously unseen material and accounts from people who knew Mica.
Mica Had Contacted Authorities Before Her Death
Another significant part of the timeline involves a 911 call Mica made shortly before her death.
According to reporting about the case, she contacted emergency services and indicated that she intended to take her own life.
That call became an important piece of information in the investigation into her death.
At the same time, people close to Mica have continued to discuss the circumstances that preceded the call, including allegations concerning her marriage.
Those two parts of the story are important to keep separate.
The official determination regarding her death was suicide.
Meanwhile, questions about her relationship with Miller became part of a separate investigation into alleged conduct involving his estranged wife.
The fact that those investigations overlap in time does not mean prosecutors have charged Miller in connection with Mica’s death.
He has not been charged with causing her death.
The Allegations Against John-Paul Miller
The investigation did not end with the determination of Mica’s cause of death.
Federal authorities later brought criminal charges against John-Paul Miller relating to alleged conduct involving his estranged wife.
In December 2025, a federal grand jury indicted Miller on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, prosecutors allege that Miller engaged in unwanted communications and other conduct directed toward Mica before her death.
The indictment also alleges that he arranged for tracking devices to be placed on her vehicle and contacted her repeatedly.
Prosecutors further allege that he interfered with her finances and damaged her vehicle.
Another allegation concerns the unauthorized publication of an intimate photograph.
These are allegations contained in a federal indictment, not findings of guilt.
Miller has pleaded not guilty.
What Are the Federal Charges?
The federal case is separate from the investigation into Mica’s death.
Miller faces two federal counts.
One concerns cyberstalking.
The other involves allegedly making false statements to federal investigators.
According to prosecutors, the cyberstalking charge carries a maximum potential sentence of five years in prison, while the false-statements charge carries a maximum of two years.
The charges may also carry substantial financial penalties.
Miller was released on a $100,000 bond while awaiting trial.
His federal trial is currently scheduled for October 2026.
Until the case is resolved, the allegations remain allegations and Miller remains legally presumed innocent.
Why the Federal Case Matters
The federal indictment has given investigators’ concerns about Miller’s alleged conduct a formal legal framework.
It also helps explain why the story has continued to receive attention long after Mica’s death.
The case is no longer solely about a tragic death that attracted public speculation.
Federal prosecutors have separately accused Miller of conduct that they say involved harassment, surveillance and false statements.
That distinction is important.
There is currently no federal charge accusing Miller of causing Mica’s death.
The documentary may explore questions raised by her family and friends, but those questions should not be confused with a criminal finding that her death was caused by another person.
The Documentary Brings Old Questions Back Into Public View
Death of the Pastor’s Wife arrived on Netflix more than two years after Mica’s death.
That timing means many viewers are encountering the story for the first time.
Others who followed the case in 2024 are now seeing additional interviews, footage and perspectives that were not previously available to the public.
The format of a documentary also changes how people experience a case.
Instead of reading isolated news reports, viewers can hear from people connected to Mica and see material presented within a broader chronological narrative.
That can make previously known events feel very different.
It can also encourage viewers to reconsider information they thought they already understood.
Why the Marriage Teachings Have Become a Major Talking Point
The controversy surrounding Miller’s sermons is not simply about one particular phrase.
It reflects a much broader debate about the role of religious authority within intimate relationships.
Ideas about marriage can carry enormous influence when they are communicated by someone who is also viewed as a spiritual leader.
For critics of Miller, the sermons presented in the documentary raise questions about whether religious authority can be misused to reinforce unhealthy expectations between partners.
For others, the sermons need to be considered within the broader theological context in which they were delivered.
The documentary has nevertheless made those messages part of the public conversation again.
And because viewers already know how Mica’s story ended, the sermons can be especially difficult to hear.
A Story With More Than One Investigation
One reason the case can be confusing is that several different issues have become intertwined.
There is the investigation into Mica’s death.
There are allegations Mica reportedly made about her marriage.
There is the divorce proceeding.
And there is the later federal criminal case against Miller.
Each involves different questions.
The official determination remains that Mica died by suicide.
Miller has not been charged with her death.
Separately, federal prosecutors have accused him of cyberstalking and making false statements.
He has pleaded not guilty to those charges.
Keeping those facts separate is essential when discussing the case.
What Happens Next?
The next major development is expected to come from the federal court proceedings.
Miller’s trial is currently scheduled for October 2026.
The proceedings should provide an opportunity for prosecutors to present their evidence and for Miller’s defense team to challenge the allegations.
Until then, many of the details receiving renewed attention because of the Netflix documentary remain part of a complicated and emotionally charged story.
The documentary can present testimony, recordings and previously unseen material, but the legal outcome of the federal case will ultimately be determined through the court process.
Why Viewers Can’t Stop Talking About It
The reaction to Death of the Pastor’s Wife demonstrates the unusual power of true-crime documentaries.
A case that was already familiar to some audiences has suddenly reached millions of additional viewers.
And instead of focusing exclusively on the investigation, viewers have become fascinated by the culture surrounding the story.
The sermons are one example.
They have prompted questions about religious leadership, marriage, personal boundaries and the influence that a pastor can have over members of a congregation.
At the same time, the documentary has renewed interest in Mica herself.
Behind the headlines and legal documents was a 30-year-old woman whose family and friends say they are still trying to make sense of the final months of her life.
Mica Miller’s Story Continues to Raise Questions
The story of Mica Miller is difficult precisely because it contains both information that is known and questions that remain unresolved.
Her death was ruled a suicide.
Her marriage had entered divorce proceedings.
She had reportedly raised concerns about her relationship.
And her estranged husband now faces federal charges unrelated to her death.
Those facts exist alongside the memories of people who knew Mica and the questions they continue to ask.
For viewers discovering the story through Netflix, the sermons may be one of the most unsettling parts.
But they are ultimately only one piece of a much larger story about marriage, faith, personal boundaries and the legal questions that followed Mica’s death.
As Miller’s federal case moves toward trial, public interest is unlikely to disappear.
For now, however, the most responsible way to view the story is to distinguish between what the documentary presents, what people allege, what prosecutors have charged and what a court has actually determined.
That distinction matters—not only in this case, but in every true-crime story that suddenly becomes a viral conversation.
