The Wales family stepped out together this weekend, and cameras caught a moment fans haven’t stopped talking about since.
King Charles and Queen Camilla were joined by Prince William, Princess Kate, and their three children for their regular Sunday worship near the family’s Scottish estate. Princess Anne and Prince Edward rounded out the gathering, but one young royal in particular drew everyone’s attention.
The outing landed just weeks before George trades his school uniform for one steeped in centuries of tradition. It also unfolded against the backdrop of fresh royal headlines that had nothing to do with him at all.

A Family Gathering at Crathie Kirk
On Sunday, August 23, 2026, the extended royal family made their way to the small Church of Scotland parish kirk that sits near the Balmoral estate. It’s the same modest church where Queen Elizabeth II worshipped for decades whenever she was in residence.
Charles and Camilla traveled in the first car. William drove the second, carrying Kate and their three children behind him.
Both William and his eldest son wore matching suits for the occasion, a small detail that didn’t go unnoticed once the photos began circulating.

Cameras Catch Prince George’s Serious Expression
It’s George’s face, not his father’s driving or the church’s history, that turned this routine outing into a talking point. Photos from inside the car show the future king staring ahead with a notably solemn expression, his jaw set and his eyes fixed somewhere off-camera.

The images spread quickly once they hit social media, where they became the centerpiece of the entire story. Commenters wasted no time weighing in on what they saw. One X user wrote simply, “George looks worried.”
Another was more sympathetic to the pressure George faces every time a camera is pointed his way, writing, “The kids always look a little scared in front of the press. I wish they would back off.”

On Facebook, the reactions leaned even more pointed. “George looks apprehensive as well he might! Many jealous Uncles in history!” one commenter suggested, while another added a blunter observation: “He never smiles.”
Whether the 13-year-old’s expression reflects anything more than an ordinary Sunday mood is impossible to say from a photograph alone. But the timing hasn’t helped quiet the speculation.

Major Life Changes Looming
George’s next chapter is already set. Kensington Palace confirmed in July that “Kensington Palace can confirm that Prince George will attend Eton College from this September,” William’s office said in a statement, with the storied all-boys school near Windsor Castle.
The prestigious institution charges roughly $85,000 a year and has produced 20 British prime ministers, including Boris Johnson and David Cameron.
George currently attends the private Lambrook School alongside his younger siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Eton will be a considerable shift: unlike Lambrook, it’s a full boarding school with no day pupils, meaning George will only come home on weekends and holidays.
He won’t be sharing a room, though. Eton’s policy guarantees every boy his own study-bedroom from day one, a rule designed to build independence and self-discipline rather than foster shared dormitory life.
The school has also taken visible steps to shield its newest arrival from public view. Fresh photos from outside the campus show new “No photography” signs recently installed along the fences, aimed at keeping media and members of the public from crowding pupils.
That kind of protection isn’t new for a royal at Eton. When William enrolled, the press agreed to leave him alone in exchange for occasional arranged photo opportunities, a trade-off William later said let him experience something close to a normal student life.

Before any of that, though, George faces a rite of passage nearly every Eton boy dreads. Royal historian Hugo Vickers, an Old Etonian himself, described in a piece for the Times how new boys are grilled by older students with almost no time to prepare.
George’s version will be the “colours test,” which requires memorizing the location of school buildings and the official colors of all 25 boarding houses.
Vickers also noted that some of the harsher traditions of his own era, like fagging and caning, are long gone. What remains is the uniform itself: morning tails, a stiff collar, and a curious button-covering tie worn in honor of George III, the king whose name George shares.
The church visit also comes just as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced plans to move back to the U.K., adding another layer to an already eventful stretch for the family.
