A seemingly tiny moment on the red carpet turned into one of the most talked-about details of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day premiere.
As Jon Bernthal posed alongside his 24-year-old co-star Sadie Sink, cameras captured him placing an arm around her while keeping his hand closed in a fist rather than resting it directly against her back.
The subtle gesture quickly caught the attention of social media users, with many interpreting it as a deliberate sign of respect and personal boundaries. Others argued that the moment was being analyzed far more than it deserved.
One viral post suggested the gesture said something about Bernthal’s character, especially given his very different history away from the spotlight.
The post pointed out that Jon Bernthal had a troubled youth, including fights, school expulsions and years of boxing. It also referenced his own admissions that he once came dangerously close to ending up in prison.
Yet the actor’s life today looks very different.
The viral post contrasted the violent characters Bernthal is often known for playing with the way he conducts himself in real life.
“The men he plays can’t control their hands. The man himself has turned control into a signature.”
The writer also highlighted Bernthal’s long marriage, his role as a father of three and his efforts to have conversations with former inmates and police officers through his podcast.
The post ultimately framed the closed-fist gesture as a simple expression of respect:
“Protect the people around you. Never put someone in a position they’d have to explain.”
The internet had plenty to say
Once the image began circulating, reactions were sharply divided.
Some people praised Bernthal, with one commenter writing:
“Small details, big respect. Shows a lot about the man.”
“Seems a classy guy,” wrote one netizen.
Another said:
“What we expect our husbands and boyfriends to do.”
A different commenter argued that Bernthal may simply have been trying to make sure Sink felt comfortable, writing:
“Folks saying he’s afraid of being accused of harassment, when in fact he just doesn’t want to make her uncomfortable. They’re different things.”
Others compared his pose to a habit associated with Keanu Reeves.
”Keanu Reeves does something similar when posing with fans. He doesn’t touch them,” wrote one person.
”Lots of celebrities do this to keep things very ”clean and clear.” I have pictures from 2019 with two literal rockstars that I ran into, and the side hug in the picture is completely hands off, just a floating arm behind my back,” another said.
But there were plenty of people who saw things differently.
One person questioned why the interaction had become such a major discussion:
“Oh man, but what’s the problem with a simple touch in this context??? He’s not making any suggestive movements with his hand; everything’s fine,”
Another suggested Bernthal could simply have kept his arm down:
“If you’re so worried, not putting your arm around her at all is another option. This seems performative.”
Someone else joked:
“This guy doesn’t wanna be accused thirty years later.”
Bernthal has been open about his troubled past
For fans familiar with Bernthal’s story, the viral discussion brought renewed attention to the actor’s younger years.
Bernthal, who grew up in Cabin John, Maryland, has never tried to hide the fact that he struggled with anger and repeatedly found himself in dangerous situations.
Bernthal has been candid about his troubled youth, describing his younger self as a “troublemaker” who frequently got into fights, was expelled from several schools and made decisions that could have taken his life down a very different path.
According to IMDb, he has broken his nose 15 times, both in real-life fights and while performing action scenes.
Looking back at that period of his life, Bernthal once told The Guardian:
“I made a lot of mistakes in my life, and I was headed down quite a few roads that I probably shouldn’t have been able to come back from.”
He has described himself as the “black sheep” of his family, despite having two highly successful brothers.
“I think Jon was really drawn to the excitement and pure testosterone-fueled like, ‘Me and my boys are going out and this night could turn any way,’” his brother Nick told New York Times in 2025.
“I always wanted to be around the most dangerous people,” the actor himself confessed to the same newspaper, back in 2022. “I always wanted to explore the most dangerous nooks and crannies of my city and see how far I could get away with things. And when you have brothers who are super high-achieving, I think maybe I was pushing the boundaries, because I wanted to see, ‘would they still love me if I did this?”.
Boxing and martial arts eventually became important parts of his life before acting gave him a completely different direction.
Bernthal has said that discovering acting gave him something to focus all of his intensity and determination on.
“I do know that, before I found acting, I was really lost, and everybody was really worried about me. I had never poured in all of my energy and grit and determination into anything, but when I found acting, I poured it all into that, and it served me.”
He has also discussed therapy and anger-management classes after a 2009 altercation that nearly had devastating consequences.
Behind the tough-guy roles is a devoted family man
Bernthal may be best known for portraying intense and sometimes violent characters, including Frank Castle in The Punisher and Shane Walsh in The Walking Dead, but he has repeatedly emphasized that his life away from the screen centers on his family.
He has been married to trauma nurse Erin Angle since 2010, following years of dating. The couple share three children: Henry, Billy and Adeline.
Speaking about his marriage on NBC’s Today, Bernthal joked about how much effort he still puts into spending time with his wife:
“I’m still begging her to go out with me, begging her to hang out with me.”
He has also summed up his priorities simply:
“My life consists of my wife, my kids and my work.”
Bernthal has credited his family, along with therapy and anger management, with helping him move beyond the troubled period of his youth.
He previously told The Guardian:
“I know how to create danger, but I know how to do it in a totally healthy way.”
The actor has also spoken about wanting his sons to understand that strength and kindness can go hand in hand.
“I want them to see kindness as masculine, not a sign of weakness.”
His daughter, Adeline, has followed him into acting and appeared alongside him in The Punisher: One Last Kill. She also joined her father on the red carpet for the Spider-Man: Brand New Day premiere.
