The morning at Renoster Pan in South Africa’s Kruger National Park seemed unusually quiet.
Wildlife photographer Lambert Fourie had been waiting patiently beside the waterhole, hoping that an animal would eventually appear for a drink. The watering hole is visited by many species, making it an ideal place to observe wildlife.
But on this particular morning, the expected visitors never arrived.
Instead, a hyena appeared.
What happened next was far more entertaining than anyone could have anticipated.
Rather than simply approaching the water to drink, the hyena gradually entered the pool and began moving through the water. Then, in an unexpected display that looked remarkably like a human swimming technique, the animal rolled onto its back and began paddling with all four paws in the air.
For several moments, the hyena appeared to be enjoying its unusual morning swim.
The sight left Lambert Fourie watching in disbelief as the normally land-based predator transformed a quiet watering hole into what looked like a personal swimming pool.
A Hyena’s Unexpected Morning Swim
According to Lambert’s account, the hyena initially appeared hesitant.
It repeatedly looked around before entering the water, almost as though checking its surroundings before deciding whether the pool was safe.
Eventually, curiosity won.
The animal stepped into the muddy water slowly before becoming more comfortable. It then moved farther into the pool and began swimming.
The most amusing part came when the hyena turned onto its back.
With its paws lifted above the water, it appeared to be performing a surprisingly convincing version of a backstroke.
Of course, the hyena wasn’t necessarily attempting to imitate a human swimmer. The movement was simply an unusual behavior that happened to resemble a familiar swimming technique.
For the people watching, however, the resemblance was hard to ignore.
Why Would a Hyena Go Swimming?
Hyenas are highly adaptable mammals, and their relationship with water is more complicated than their reputation might suggest.
They are primarily terrestrial animals and spend much of their time traveling across grasslands, woodland, and other dry environments. Swimming isn’t generally considered one of their defining behaviors.
However, that doesn’t mean hyenas avoid water completely.
Waterholes can serve several purposes for wildlife. During hot weather, animals may approach them to drink, cool themselves, investigate their surroundings, or interact with members of their social group.
A shallow pool can also become an interesting environment for playful behavior.
This means that although a hyena performing a backstroke is unusual to witness, entering water itself isn’t necessarily extraordinary.
Hyenas Are More Adaptable Than Their Reputation Suggests
Hyenas are often portrayed in popular culture as scavengers waiting for opportunities left behind by other predators.
That image is incomplete.
Spotted hyenas, in particular, are capable hunters with complex social structures. They can work together, communicate through a variety of sounds and body signals, and travel considerable distances in search of food and water.
Their powerful jaws, strong bodies, and remarkable endurance make them highly capable predators.
Their adaptability is another reason they can survive across challenging environments.
The swimming hyena at Renoster Pan offered another entertaining reminder that wildlife doesn’t always behave according to the expectations humans develop from documentaries, books, or popular stories.
The Backstroke May Have Been Playful Behavior
It is tempting to imagine that the hyena was training for some imaginary wildlife swimming competition.
Perhaps it was practicing for a race against another member of its clan.
Or maybe it had simply discovered that floating on its back was comfortable.
There is no reliable evidence from this sighting to determine exactly what the hyena was thinking.
Scientists generally interpret animal behavior by examining context, repeated observations, and patterns across individuals rather than assigning human motivations to a single event.
The backstroke-like movement could have been related to play, cooling, exploration, or simply the animal experimenting with its position in the water.
The most accurate conclusion is also the simplest: the hyena appeared comfortable enough to spend several minutes swimming and moving around in the water.
Another Hyena Watches From the Shore
The unusual swimming session became even more interesting when another member of the clan arrived.
Rather than joining the activity, the second hyena remained near the water’s edge and watched.
This contrast made the scene especially entertaining.
One hyena seemed perfectly happy splashing around in the water, while the other appeared to have no interest in participating.
This difference is a useful reminder that animals, like humans, can display individual preferences.
Not every member of a species behaves exactly the same way.
One hyena may enter the water willingly, while another may prefer to remain on dry ground. A behavior that seems unusual for the species as a whole may simply be something that one particular animal happens to tolerate or enjoy.
What Do Hyenas Actually Do Around Water?
Waterholes play an important role in African ecosystems.
They attract herbivores, predators, birds, and countless smaller species. Because so many animals depend on water, these locations can become some of the best places for observing interactions between different species.
For hyenas, water may provide opportunities for drinking and cooling down. Depending on the environment, water sources can also become places where members of a clan encounter one another.
Young hyenas may also engage in playful activities, and social animals frequently use shared spaces for interaction.
However, it’s important not to assume that every unusual behavior has a single explanation.
A hyena entering the water doesn’t necessarily mean it was searching for prey or deliberately trying to cool down. Without additional observations, several explanations can remain possible.
Why This Sighting Is So Memorable
Wildlife photography often captures moments that cannot easily be predicted.
A safari visitor might spend hours watching an empty waterhole before suddenly witnessing an unexpected encounter.
That’s part of what makes wildlife observation so fascinating.
Animals don’t follow scripts.
They don’t perform on demand.
A hyena might spend one morning resting in the shade, another searching for food, and another unexpectedly turning a muddy pool into its own swimming area.
These unpredictable moments can provide valuable opportunities to appreciate animal behavior from a different perspective.
The Cultural Image of the Hyena
Hyenas have occupied a fascinating place in human culture for centuries.
In different African traditions and other cultural narratives, hyenas have been associated with a wide range of characteristics, from cleverness and adaptability to mystery and unpredictability.
Modern popular culture has often emphasized their distinctive calls and unusual appearance, sometimes giving them a more sinister image than their actual biology warrants.
Scientific observation presents a much more nuanced picture.
Hyenas are intelligent, social mammals with sophisticated communication systems and complex relationships within their groups.
Their reputation in stories and folklore reflects the way humans interpret unfamiliar animals, while behavioral science allows researchers to study what these animals actually do.
The swimming hyena offers a particularly charming example of how reality can sometimes be more surprising than stereotypes.
Could Hyenas Really Be Good Swimmers?
The answer requires some nuance.
Hyenas are capable of entering and moving through water, but they are not aquatic specialists. Their bodies are adapted primarily for life on land.
This means that seeing one swim should not lead to the conclusion that hyenas are naturally excellent swimmers or that swimming is an important part of their daily routine.
The individual observed at Renoster Pan simply demonstrated that a hyena can comfortably move through water under certain circumstances.
The backstroke-like posture is especially unusual, but the footage doesn’t establish that this is a common behavior among hyenas.
More observations would be necessary before scientists could determine how frequently similar behavior occurs and why.
A Reminder to Watch the Waterholes
One of the most valuable lessons from this encounter is that wildlife can surprise us when we simply take the time to observe.
Waterholes are essential gathering points in many ecosystems. They provide animals with something fundamental: access to water.
But they also create opportunities for observation.
A quiet afternoon near a watering hole could reveal birds interacting, elephants playing, antelope approaching cautiously, or a curious predator doing something completely unexpected.
The key is patience.
Wildlife experiences are often memorable precisely because they cannot be guaranteed.
Final Thoughts
The image of a hyena floating on its back with all four paws in the air is certainly difficult to forget.
Was the animal practicing for a race?
Probably not in the human sense.
Was it enjoying itself?
That is possible, although we cannot know its internal experience from a single observation.
What we can say is that the hyena demonstrated an unexpected willingness to enter the water and spend several minutes moving around while another clan member watched from the shore.
The moment is a wonderful example of why observing wildlife can be so rewarding.
Animals constantly challenge our assumptions about what they can do and how they behave. Sometimes the most memorable discoveries aren’t dramatic events at all. They are small, unexpected moments that reveal another side of a familiar species.
And perhaps that’s what makes a quiet morning beside a watering hole so special.
You never really know what might appear next.
