RF. Harry and Meghan’s Surprise UK Move Puts William in a Difficult Position, Royal Expert Says

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are packing up a life they spent six years building in Montecito — and the timing couldn’t be more inconvenient for one particular royal.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are relocating to the UK with Archie and Lilibet for an extended stay, with the children expected to start school there come September.

Behind the decision lies a tangle of security battles, business setbacks, and a secret reunion that’s now reshaping the royal family’s next chapter — and not everyone in the family is thrilled about it.

A Sudden Announcement Six Years in the Making

Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, are moving back to Britain later this month, marking their biggest shift in family life since they stepped away from royal duties in 2020, People reported. Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, are set to begin school in the UK come September, though the location of their new home and school is being closely guarded.

The couple will keep their $14.5 million Montecito estate and their vacation property in Portugal, according to Page Six, while establishing a private, non-royal base in Britain. King Charles, 77, was reportedly told of the plan on Sunday, August 16, and is said to welcome seeing more of the Sussex family in a personal capacity.

Those close to the couple believe they’ve finally pulled off the “half in, half out” arrangement Harry and Meghan originally floated back in 2019. With a UK base secured, Harry can spend more time with charities like Scotty’s Little Soldiers, WellChild, and the Invictus community, while Meghan keeps running her lifestyle brand, As Ever, from wherever she’s based.

Allies insist the couple built the independent life they set out to create — funding themselves, paying their own mortgage, and taking no money from taxpayers. Still, the move raises a question nobody in the family seems eager to answer out loud.

A Slap in the Face for William

Royal reporter Tom Sykes didn’t mince words when he spoke to Page Six about what this means for the Prince of Wales. “It’s a huge slap in the face for William, and it does also create serious risks for the monarchy,” he said.

Sykes pointed to the brothers’ long-running feud as the real complication. He predicted a “huge succession” of new headaches for William, asking pointedly: “What is gonna happen if Charles invites Harry to join the royal family for Christmas? What is gonna happen if Harry wants to attend the Remembrance Day celebrations?”

He also floated a theory that’s likely to raise eyebrows in the palace: he sees “no way” King Charles didn’t know exactly what was coming. Calling it “a very very dangerous situation,” Sykes suggested the king “allowed himself to be manipulated into welcoming them home,” adding that the late Queen Elizabeth II would never have permitted it.

Even so, Sykes called the relocation a genuinely “huge moment” for the family, admitting he suspected something was in motion but never expected it to happen “this quickly” or on this scale. He described the idea of the Sussexes moving by the end of the month as “quite extraordinary.”

Sources told Page Six the decision came down to wanting to be closer to King Charles and giving Archie and Lilibet the chance to build real relationships with royal relatives. But Sykes also suggested a more practical motive was in play, one tied to money.

How William and Kate Are Reacting

Royal biographer Christopher Andersen offered US Weekly a blunt read on the Wales household’s mood. “All I can think of is: here we go again,” he said, adding that William and Kate are likely “tearing their hair out” while trying to steer the monarchy forward without added distractions.

Andersen warned that the Sussexes’ return will inevitably “suck up all the oxygen in the room,” generating tabloid coverage that pulls focus from other royals — something both King Charles and William reportedly dislike.

He noted that Meghan struggled with British sensibilities and an unforgiving press during her earlier years in the UK, and questioned whether the family is fully prepared for that scrutiny returning.

There’s also the matter of Archie and Lilibet’s privacy. Andersen pointed out that, unlike Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis — whose faces have been public since birth — most people still don’t know what the Sussex children look like, calling the situation potentially untenable once the family is living in Britain full-time.

Security costs are another sticking point. Since Harry has no automatic taxpayer-funded protection, Andersen estimated private bodyguards could end up costing the family millions out of pocket, unless Charles quietly steps in to help — something there’s currently no indication he plans to do.

Andersen also raised a theory of his own: that the move might be a deliberate play to force the royal family’s hand on Harry’s future role. He suggested constant UK press coverage could pressure Charles into welcoming Harry back into some kind of fold, though he was careful to note that doesn’t mean William is on board.

“There is still bitterness there. All is not forgiven,” he said, describing the king and William as “gobsmacked” by the announcement.

The Security Battle That Made This Possible

Harry’s UK homecoming has been years in the making, largely because of an unresolved fight over police protection. When Meghan and the children skipped his July visit to London, it was directly tied to unresolved questions over their safety, CNN reported at the time.

Harry’s team argued that risk “follows the person, not the place,” and pushed back on the idea that private accommodation alone could substitute for a full security assessment. His spokesperson said it was “difficult to understand” how current arrangements could be justified without an independent review that RAVEC itself had deemed necessary the previous November.

That fight dates back further than most people realize. Harry lost a legal appeal in May 2025 over the downgraded protection status he’d been given after stepping back from royal duties in 2020, Rolling Stone reported. The court sided with RAVEC’s decision to offer a “bespoke” protection model instead of automatic coverage.

Following that loss, Harry told the BBC he was “devastated,” not by the ruling itself but by what it revealed about the people behind it. He said at the time that he couldn’t “see a world” in which he’d bring his family back to the UK, while still insisting he “would love reconciliation” with the family and had no interest in continuing the fight.

Despite that 2025 statement, something clearly shifted. Harry has continued privately pressing officials for a fresh risk assessment, arguing one hasn’t happened in more than six years — and the family’s decision to finally establish a UK base suggests those efforts, or the family’s patience, reached a turning point.

Frogmore Cottage’s Empty, Costly Legacy

The Sussexes haven’t had a UK home base since giving up Frogmore Cottage, the Windsor property Queen Elizabeth gifted them in 2018. Harry was asked to vacate by King Charles in 2023, shortly after the release of his memoir, “Spare.”

The eviction came with a steep price tag attached. Harry reportedly paid back £2.4 million ($2.8 million) in renovation costs, on top of rent, bringing the couple’s total cost for the home to roughly $3.3 million, according to Page Six.

Since then, the property has sat empty. The Sun reported that plans are now underway to reverse the couple’s renovations entirely, with officials exploring whether the cottage can be split back into two separate homes. One insider told the outlet the goal is to return the property to its “pre-Meghan and Harry era.”

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was floated as a potential occupant amid his own Royal Lodge eviction talks, but he turned it down. A source close to the situation noted the irony bluntly: “It’s been empty for three years. Even Andrew thought it wasn’t good enough for him to move in.”

Royal commentator Afua Hagan called the whole situation “petty” in comments to Newsweek, pointing out that Frogmore is owned by the Crown Estate, meaning any rent Harry and Meghan paid would have gone toward funding the monarchy itself.

With the cottage sitting vacant, that income has simply vanished. It also means whatever home the Sussexes are now securing in the UK, it almost certainly isn’t Frogmore.

Life in Montecito Wasn’t All It Promised

For all the sunshine, California hasn’t gone entirely as planned for the couple. Netflix quietly stepped back as a financial backer of Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As Ever, in March, telling Variety that the partnership was “always intended” to eventually let Meghan run the company independently.

The move followed a steep decline in viewership for the second season of her Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan,” which has aired two eight-episode seasons and a holiday special without a confirmed renewal, Deadline reported. Netflix remains in a scaled-back, first-look deal with the couple’s production company, Archewell Productions.

Royal reporter Tom Sykes suggested the timing of the UK move isn’t a coincidence, telling Page Six it’s “very clear the things haven’t worked out in America the way they thought they would.” He added a pointed financial theory of his own: “I think if there was another hundred-million-dollar deal on the table they wouldn’t be rushing home.”

The Secret Reunion That Changed Everything

The final piece of the puzzle traces back to a hush-hush meeting in July. King Charles orchestrated a private reunion with Harry, Meghan, Archie, and Lilibet at Highgrove House, going so far as to keep even Prince William and Kate in the dark, Vanity Fair reported.

A source described the hour-long meeting as “completely cloak-and-dagger, orchestrated by the king,” noting that Queen Camilla rushed over from her own estate to be by his side once plans were confirmed. Buckingham Palace only acknowledged the meeting after Harry had already left the property unseen.

It marked the first time Charles had seen Archie and Lilibet in more than four years. A source close to the Sussexes said the family kept the details entirely private by design: “They were at Highgrove for an hour or so, but don’t expect to hear anything about what was said. That was the promise Harry made to his father.”

Notably, Meghan and the children weren’t originally part of Harry’s UK travel plans that week — she’d pulled out of accompanying him earlier over the same unresolved security concerns that have shadowed the family for years.

Her last-minute arrival for the Highgrove meeting suggests those concerns were, at least temporarily, resolved enough to bring the whole family across the Atlantic.

What Happens Next

With Archie and Lilibet enrolling in school come September, the Sussexes’ return to Britain is no longer speculation — it’s set in motion. But between William’s frosty silence, an unresolved security review, and a Frogmore Cottage that’s being deliberately erased of their memory, the family is stepping into a homecoming that’s anything but simple.

Whether this brings Harry any closer to reconciliation with his brother remains an open question. For now, all eyes are on where exactly the family will land — and how long the palace can keep it quiet.
