When Hannah Powell walked into the Houston Humane Society, she expected to spend some time meeting cats before deciding which one might become part of her family.
She had no idea that one quiet kennel would change her plans almost immediately.
Inside was Joey, a young cat whose appearance did not tell the full story. While other cats attracted visitors, Joey remained quietly in his enclosure. But beside his kennel was a note explaining that his life had been far more difficult than most shelter animals.
The information on that note stopped Hannah in her tracks.
Joey had survived multiple serious injuries and required extensive veterinary care before reaching the shelter. He also lived with lasting physical and neurological challenges that affected the way he moved and interacted with his surroundings.
Yet there was something else Hannah noticed.
Joey was still curious.
He still wanted to explore.
And, despite his challenges, he still had plenty of personality.
That was enough for Hannah to realize that Joey deserved a chance at a home where he could be understood, protected, and loved.
Joey’s Story Began With a Difficult Rescue
Joey was rescued alongside five other cats when he was still very young, reportedly between three and six months old.
By the time he reached safety, he had already undergone numerous veterinary evaluations.
His medical history included several significant injuries, including skull fractures, head trauma, a ruptured eardrum, and a brain injury. He had also experienced dehydration and complications involving his liver.
The extent of his injuries meant that his recovery was not going to be simple.
At one point, euthanasia had reportedly been considered because of the seriousness of his condition.
Fortunately, Joey received continued care and survived.
However, some of the effects remained long after his initial treatment.
Living With Lasting Challenges
Joey now has mild cognitive difficulties and physical challenges affecting his front limbs.
His posture can appear somewhat unusual, and he sometimes has trouble maintaining his balance.
He can climb and run, but his movements are not always perfectly coordinated. Occasionally, he misjudges a jump or loses his footing.
Hannah therefore makes adjustments around the home to help keep him comfortable.
Soft surfaces give Joey a safer place to land when his balance fails, while his surroundings are arranged with his mobility in mind.
Despite these precautions, Hannah does not describe Joey simply by his disabilities.
There is much more to him than his medical history.
A Curious Cat Who Loves to Explore
Before adopting Joey, Hannah expected that caring for a special-needs cat might require considerable patience.
What surprised her was how energetic he could be.
Joey loves exploring his surroundings. He enjoys climbing, jumping, and investigating objects around the house.
His enthusiasm sometimes gets him into trouble.
A jump does not always go according to plan, and he may occasionally bump into something or lose his balance.
But rather than allowing these challenges to define his life, Joey continues to explore.
That curiosity became one of the qualities Hannah loved most about him.
His First Days in a New Home
When Joey first arrived at Hannah’s apartment, she did not immediately give him access to the entire space.
Instead, she created a quiet area where he could become familiar with his new surroundings.
For several days, Joey stayed in the bathroom.
This gradual introduction gave him time to adjust to unfamiliar sounds, smells, and people without becoming overwhelmed.
Eventually, Hannah decided it was time to let him explore the rest of the apartment.
The moment Joey entered the larger space, his personality began to emerge.
He looked around with curiosity and started investigating his new environment.
For Hannah, watching him discover the apartment was deeply emotional.
The cat who had once lived through such uncertainty now had an entire home to explore.
Joey Discovers He Has a Family
Joey’s new life became even more interesting when Hannah brought another rescue cat into the household.
About a month after adopting Joey, she welcomed a cat named Mama.
Later, in October 2024, Hannah fostered another cat named Salem. Eventually, Salem became a permanent member of the family as well.
The three cats gradually developed a close relationship.
They played together, rested near one another, and shared many parts of their daily routines.
For Joey, having feline companions appeared to provide another source of interaction and enrichment.
Joey’s Gentle Side
One of the most endearing aspects of Joey’s personality is the way he interacts with the other cats.
Although his physical challenges sometimes make it difficult for him to keep up with more energetic play, he remains affectionate toward his companions.
At times, Joey has even carried Salem in his mouth, behavior that resembles the way mother cats carry their kittens.
While this behavior should not necessarily be interpreted as proof that Joey believes Salem is his kitten, it certainly adds to the unique relationship between the cats.
Hannah also makes sure Joey gets opportunities to play independently.
Because of his balance and coordination difficulties, he can sometimes become overwhelmed when the other cats are particularly energetic.
Giving him his own space allows him to participate at a pace that is comfortable for him.
Why Special-Needs Cats Deserve Consideration
Joey’s story highlights an important issue facing animal shelters.
Animals with disabilities or complicated medical histories can sometimes be overlooked by potential adopters.
People may worry that caring for them will be too difficult or expensive. Others may simply assume that an animal with physical limitations cannot enjoy a normal, fulfilling life.
Joey’s experience offers a different perspective.
A disability may mean an animal needs additional accommodations, patience, veterinary care, or supervision.
But it does not automatically prevent that animal from playing, exploring, developing relationships, and enjoying a loving home.
Every animal is different, and potential adopters should carefully consider their ability to meet an individual pet’s needs.
For the right family, however, a special-needs animal can become an incredibly rewarding companion.
Joey’s Story Reaches Thousands Online
Hannah eventually began sharing Joey’s journey on TikTok.
The story attracted considerable attention, with videos receiving thousands of views and many supportive responses from viewers.
People were particularly moved by the contrast between Joey’s difficult beginning and his life after adoption.
Instead of being defined by his medical history, Joey was shown exploring his home, interacting with his feline siblings, and enjoying everyday moments with his family.
Many viewers also said that his story encouraged them to think differently about animals who may initially appear difficult to adopt.
For Hannah, sharing Joey’s experience has become a way to raise awareness about shelter animals and the importance of giving overlooked pets an opportunity.
Adoption Can Change an Animal’s Future
Shelters are filled with animals with different personalities, backgrounds, ages, and medical needs.
Some may immediately attract attention.
Others may spend considerably longer waiting for someone to notice them.
Joey’s story illustrates how quickly an animal’s circumstances can change when the right person decides to give them a chance.
His adoption did not erase his past.
He still has physical and neurological challenges that require consideration.
But his environment changed dramatically.
He went from a shelter kennel to a home.
He gained people who understood his needs.
And he gained two feline companions who became part of his daily life.
A New Chapter for Joey
Today, Joey’s life is centered around experiences that would once have seemed uncertain.
He has a safe place to sleep, regular care, opportunities to explore, and a family that understands his limitations.
He can still stumble.
He can still misjudge a jump.
He may need more accommodations than a typical cat.
But none of those things prevent him from being curious, playful, affectionate, and deeply connected to the people and animals around him.
Perhaps the most meaningful part of Joey’s story is not that his challenges disappeared.
They did not.
Instead, he found a place where those challenges could be understood.
That distinction matters.
A second chance does not always mean returning an animal to perfect health or making its past disappear. Sometimes, it simply means giving that animal the opportunity to live comfortably, safely, and with dignity.
For Joey, one person stopping at his shelter kennel became the beginning of an entirely different chapter.
His story is a reminder that shelter animals should not always be judged by the difficulties written on their medical records. Behind those records can be a curious personality, a playful spirit, or a gentle companion waiting for someone willing to look a little closer.
And sometimes, the animal who seems to need the most understanding can become the one who gives a family the most memorable kind of love.
