The Nicole Kidman divorce from Keith Urban may have come more than two decades after her split from Tom Cruise, but experience has apparently provided no useful shortcut. Asked whether ending a second high-profile marriage felt familiar, Kidman told British Vogue: “It’s all new. Every time!”
That answer is brief, but it cuts through the usual theory that celebrities eventually become experts at public breakups. Kidman, now legally single after 19 years with Urban, said she is still adjusting to a future that looks nothing like the one she expected.
What did Kidman say about her two divorces?
Kidman married Cruise in 1990, when she was 22, and they divorced in 2001. They share two children, Isabella, 33, and Connor, 31. She later married Urban in June 2006, and they had daughters Sunday, 18, and Faith, 15.
For years, Kidman largely avoided discussing Cruise, previously telling Vogue that she did so “out of respect for Keith.” In the new interview, she focused less on comparing the men and more on the emotional reality of starting over.
“I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now,” she said. “You make all these plans and you have all these ideas of what it’s all going to be like and then it’s… not.”
Her response was not presented as a polished reinvention. Kidman described herself as fearful and “deeply vulnerable,” then outlined the less cinematic work of adapting, making mistakes and continuing anyway.
“The future, it’s completely unknown to me right now,” she said.
How does the Keith Urban settlement work?
Kidman and Urban separated and filed for divorce in September 2025. They became legally single on January 6, 2026, according to court records reported by E! News and Us Weekly and corroborated by the Associated Press.
The settlement is unusually specific and notably free of financial support claims. Both parties waived spousal and child support, kept their respective assets and agreed to pay their own legal expenses. A tidy conclusion on paper, even if human lives rarely follow the filing system.
Kidman became the primary residential parent for Sunday and Faith. Their parenting agreement reportedly provides:
- 306 days each year with Kidman
- 59 days each year with Urban
- Joint decision-making on major issues involving the children
- No child support payments by either parent
Tennessee generally requires a 90-day waiting period for divorces involving minor children. The January finalization followed that timetable after the September filing.
Urban has not offered a detailed public account of the breakup. In a post-divorce interview summarized by E! News, he said he was in “a different part of the journey.” It was a restrained description, which may be the closest celebrity interviews come to leaving paperwork where it belongs.
Why did fame feel normal after marrying Tom Cruise?
Kidman said she became comfortable performing the public version of herself because fame arrived so abruptly. Marrying Cruise, then one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, placed her under intense attention before she had much time to establish an adult life outside it.
“Because of who I married at such a young age, I was thrust into it since I was 22,” she said.
She recalled the relationship as straightforward despite everything surrounding it. “We just fell madly in love and it was that simple,” Kidman said. Industry figures warned that marriage could damage her career by reducing her to Cruise’s wife, but she did not see professional caution as a reason to avoid it.
“I don’t care. I’m in love. I want to be married,” she remembered thinking. Even when people later treated the “wife” label as proof that they had been correct, Kidman said she had no regrets about choosing the relationship.
That history helps explain why she rejects the idea that one public divorce prepares a person for another. The circumstances, family structure and stage of life were different. The photographers, naturally, remained available.
Are the Michael Reinstein rumors confirmed?
No. Kidman has been seen several times with businessman Michael Reinstein, including a reported July meeting in Portofino and an airport pickup around August 1 at Hollywood Burbank Airport. Those sightings generated romance headlines, but neither Kidman nor Reinstein has defined their relationship publicly.
The available photographs do not settle the matter. Infobae, citing images published by Page Six, reported that the pair showed no public affection. Just Jared said it could not independently confirm Reinstein’s identification, while IBTimes UK noted that the pictures established neither a romance nor the reason for their meetings.
In other words, two adults were photographed in the same places more than once. The celebrity-romance machinery handled the remaining paperwork itself.
Kidman’s comments were broader than any rumored new relationship. She said she wants to stay open to love and possibility without allowing intellect to control every decision.
“I can either really not confront it and just curl up,” she said, “or I can just go forward with an enormous amount of hope.”
Sandra Bullock, who reunited with Kidman for Practical Magic 2, recently described her co-star as “free and wild.” Kidman’s own account sounds more measured: uncertain, exposed and moving ahead without pretending she already knows the ending.
