AN. “I didn’t know what I was looking at”: drone films one of the strangest and rarest animals on the planet

For a few moments, the surface of Shark Bay looked almost ordinary.

The waters stretched quietly along the coast of Western Australia, with sunlight reflecting across the shallow sea. Wildlife videographer Jake Mason was flying his drone above the water, hoping to capture an interesting glimpse of marine life.

Then he noticed something unusual.

From above, a moving shape appeared to travel through the water just offshore. At first, Mason could not identify what he was seeing. It looked like a large collection of fish moving together in an unusual formation.

As he watched more closely, the scene became increasingly fascinating.

Several different species appeared to be traveling alongside one another, including juvenile golden trevally, cobia and what may have been one or more remoras, also known as sharksuckers.

At the front of this remarkable group was a much larger animal.

It was a whitespotted wedgefish, one of the world’s most threatened marine species.

Mason continued filming for approximately 10 minutes, watching as the surrounding fish appeared to follow the wedgefish through the water. The unusual encounter offered a rare glimpse into the complex relationships that can develop among marine animals.

While it may be tempting to describe the wedgefish as a literal “leader,” scientists would be more cautious. The footage shows an unusual association, but one observation cannot establish exactly why the fish were traveling together.

Still, the encounter raises fascinating questions about marine behavior, survival strategies and the hidden connections between species beneath the surface.

A Surprising Encounter in Shark Bay

The encounter took place in 2024 in Shark Bay, Western Australia, an area famous for its extraordinary marine biodiversity.

Mason, founder of Return To The Ocean, was using a drone to search for wildlife when the unusual group caught his attention.

His first impression was simply that something large was moving through the water.

As the drone moved closer, the individual animals became easier to distinguish.

The group appeared to include juvenile golden trevally and several cobia, along with possible remoras. Swimming among them was the much larger whitespotted wedgefish.

The contrast between the animals made the sight especially memorable.

Rather than seeing one species moving independently, Mason appeared to be watching several types of fish traveling within the same area and responding to the movements of the wedgefish.

The videographer followed the group from above until he eventually had to leave.

For wildlife observers, encounters like this are valuable because they can reveal behaviors that are difficult to observe from boats or from underwater.

What Is a Whitespotted Wedgefish?

The whitespotted wedgefish, Rhynchobatus australiae, belongs to the wedgefish family Rhinidae.

Although it has the appearance of a combination between a shark and a ray, wedgefish are actually rays. Their flattened bodies and broad heads reflect their adaptation to life close to the seafloor.

The species can grow to a substantial size, making the individual filmed in Shark Bay noticeably larger than many of the fish surrounding it.

Its body is marked with distinctive pale spots, which help give the species its common name.

Wedgefish are generally associated with coastal marine environments, including shallow waters and areas near the seafloor.

Their unusual appearance is one reason they have attracted attention from divers, photographers and marine researchers.

But their biology is even more interesting than their appearance.

Why Are Wedgefish So Important?

The whitespotted wedgefish is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

This classification reflects serious conservation concerns surrounding the species and related wedgefishes.

Wedgefish have historically faced pressure from fishing, particularly because their fins and other body parts have been valued in some markets.

Their coastal habitat can also expose them to human activity.

Because they spend much of their time relatively close to the seabed, they may be vulnerable to fishing practices that operate in shallow coastal environments.

The sighting in Shark Bay therefore represents more than a beautiful wildlife moment.

It also provides a reminder that some remarkable marine species can remain present in coastal ecosystems while facing significant conservation challenges.

Was the Wedgefish Really “Leading” the Fish?

This is perhaps the most intriguing question raised by the footage.

From the drone perspective, the surrounding fish appeared to follow the wedgefish closely. Mason described them as moving with it and changing direction alongside it.

It is easy to interpret this as leadership.

However, animal behavior is rarely that simple.

Scientists generally avoid assigning human motivations to animal behavior without sufficient evidence. A group of fish moving behind a larger animal does not necessarily mean that the larger animal is intentionally guiding them.

There may be several possible explanations.

The smaller fish could have been taking advantage of the wedgefish’s movement to search for food. They might have been using its presence as a form of protection from predators. They could also have been responding to the same environmental cues or following a preferred route through the habitat.

Another possibility is that the association was simply temporary.

Without repeated observations or controlled research, it is impossible to determine precisely why the animals were traveling together.

That uncertainty does not make the footage less interesting.

In fact, it makes the observation even more valuable because it raises questions for future research.

The location of the sighting is important.

Shark Bay is recognized as one of Australia’s most significant marine environments, supporting seagrass meadows, dugongs, turtles, sharks, rays and numerous species of fish.

Its shallow coastal habitats provide important feeding and nursery areas for marine animals.

Of course, drone footage has limitations.

A short recording captures only a small moment in the animals’ lives. It cannot necessarily tell researchers how long the association lasted before filming began or what happened after the drone departed.

Nevertheless, such observations can provide valuable starting points for further investigation.

“At first, I didn’t know what I was looking at,” he said in a Instagram post sharing the footage. “It was a ball of something moving along.”

As he looked closer, he started to make out different types of fish within the group. “I noticed it was a school of juvenile golden trevally, several cobia, and possibly a sharksucker or two,” he said. Sharksucker is another name for suckerfish, or remora.

A Rare Species in an Unexpected Role

The most memorable aspect of Mason’s encounter may be the contrast between the wedgefish’s conservation status and its apparent role within the group.

The whitespotted wedgefish is not an animal most people regularly encounter.

Its coastal lifestyle means it can spend much of its time away from human attention, moving through shallow marine habitats.

Yet for approximately 10 minutes, one individual became the centerpiece of an unusual underwater gathering.

Juvenile trevally, cobia and possible remoras appeared to travel alongside it.

From above, the scene almost looked choreographed.

But nature does not need to be choreographed to be remarkable.

Animals constantly respond to their surroundings, to one another and to changing environmental conditions. Occasionally, those interactions produce moments that look extraordinary to human observers.

Myth, Symbolism and the Mystery of the Ocean

Humans have long attached symbolic meaning to large marine animals.

Across different cultures, rays, sharks and other ocean creatures have appeared in stories representing strength, movement, mystery and the unknown.

A large wedgefish seemingly moving at the front of a group could easily inspire imaginative interpretations.

Someone might describe it as a guide, guardian or leader.

Such language can make a wildlife story emotionally powerful, but it should remain separate from scientific conclusions.

There is no evidence from this single observation that the wedgefish understood itself to be leading the other animals.

The more scientifically responsible interpretation is simpler.

Several species were observed moving together, and the larger wedgefish appeared to be at the front of the group.

The reason for that arrangement remains uncertain.

That distinction matters because nature is fascinating enough without needing exaggerated explanations.

What This Encounter Can Teach Us

The footage from Shark Bay offers several important lessons.

Was it truly leading them?

Perhaps not in the human sense of the word.

They may have been responding to food opportunities, seeking protection, following environmental cues or simply sharing the same route.

For now, the exact explanation remains uncertain.

And perhaps that is the most fascinating part.

Human curiosity has always encouraged us to look closer at the natural world. A strange movement in the ocean becomes a question. A mysterious group of fish becomes an invitation to investigate. A rare animal appearing unexpectedly becomes a reminder of how much remains undiscovered.

The ocean does not always give us immediate answers.

Sometimes, it simply gives us a remarkable moment and asks us to keep watching.
