For years, anglers and researchers studying a quiet lake that stretches across the U.S.-Canada border noticed something unusual about the brown bullhead catfish living there. More and more fish were developing dark, raised skin lesions unlike anything commonly seen before.

Beginning around 2012, researchers observed increasing numbers of brown bullhead catfish with raised black patches on their skin. Between 2014 and 2017, surveys found that approximately 23% to 37% of sampled fish displayed these unusual growths.
The unexpectedly high percentage prompted scientists to investigate whether the lesions were linked to environmental contamination, infectious disease, or another underlying cause.
What Scientists Found

Laboratory examinations confirmed that the dark lesions were malignant melanomas, a form of cancer involving pigment-producing cells.
