The first time that German General Klaus von Richtberg entered Barrack Number 7 of Ravensbrück in March 1943, he didn’t say a single word. He simply walked between the rows of exhausted, hungry, destroyed women, his hands crossed behind his back and his eyes scanning each face like someone evaluating merchandise.
Most of the prisoners kept staring at the ground, knowing that any eye contact could mean selection for lethal work in the munitions factories—or worse. But when he stopped in front of Arianne de l’Orme, something changed in the air. There was no physical contact, no verbal threat, only a dense, calculated silence that lasted just long enough for all the women surrounding them to feel that something irreversible had just been decided.
He made a brief sign to a guard, turned around, and went out. Three hours later, Arianne was removed from the barracks. She never returned to sleep among the other prisoners again.
A Life Before the War
“My name is Arianne de l’Orme. I was born in 1924 in a small town in the interior of France called Beaune, known for its vineyards and medieval architecture that crossed the centuries without haste. Before the war, I studied literature at the University of Lyon. I dreamed of becoming a professor. I used to read Baudelaire in hiding during the domestic economics lessons that my mother insisted I follow. I had an ordinary, predictable, protected life—until the German occupation transformed France into an impossible territory.
My older brother, Étienne, was one of the first to join the Resistance in our region. I followed him not out of courage, but because remaining inactive while my country was dismantled piece by piece seemed a greater betrayal than any risk involved. I distributed clandestine newspapers, hid Jewish families in cellars, and transported encrypted messages from one cell to another.
In November 1942, I was denounced. I never knew by whom. I was arrested by the Gestapo, questioned for six consecutive days, and then sent to Ravensbrück—the largest female concentration camp in the Reich, located ninety kilometers north of Berlin.”
The Reality of the Camp
Ravensbrück was not an extermination camp like Auschwitz or Treblinka, but death inhabited every centimeter of that place. More than 130,000 women passed through its doors between 1939 and 1945. It is estimated that tens of thousands never came out alive. There were summary executions, medical experiments carried out without anesthesia, forced labor that consumed bodies within a few weeks, and an exhaustion so deep that some prisoners lost the ability to recognize familiar faces.
“I arrived there in February 1943 at just nineteen years old, weighing barely forty kilos and wearing a striped uniform that smelled of mold and cheap disinfectant. During the first weeks, I learned the unwritten rules: do not look directly at the guards, do not help those who fall during the morning marches, do not ask questions about nocturnal disappearances.
Surviving there required the ability to become invisible. But I failed in this task. There was something about me that attracted attention, and I hated it with every fiber of my being. Maybe it was the fact that I still had relatively healthy hair, or skin which, even under severe deprivation, retained a certain vitality. Maybe it was my height, my light eyes inherited from a Breton grandmother, or simply the youth that hunger had not yet completely consumed while other women around me were wasting away. Week after week, I seemed to resist in a way that aroused both notice and a specific type of danger.
The guards began to observe me during inspections. Some quickly averted their gaze, as if embarrassed. Others held eye contact for far too long. But it was General Klaus von Richtberg who transformed observation into possession.”
The General’s Obsession
He was not an ordinary officer. He was a fifty-year-old veteran of the First World War, decorated with the Iron Cross, and a member of a traditional Prussian family dating back to the eighteenth century. His presence in Ravensbrück was not official; he was there on an administrative mission related to the allocation of female workers for armaments factories in eastern Germany. But when he saw Arianne, something changed in his schedule.
Those who encounter this account today—from any part of the world where memory still matters—are witnesses not only to the reconstruction of historical facts, but to the rescue of a voice that was systematically silenced for decades. Arianne de l’Orme never sought notoriety. She never wanted to be a symbol. But her story, like so many others buried under the weight of institutional oblivion, bears truths that no school textbook dares to teach.
“The night I was taken away for the first time to the General’s private quarters, I walked between two guards in absolute silence. There were no chains, no weapons pointed at me—only the certainty that any resistance would be useless and possibly fatal, not only for me, but for any prisoner who dared to question orders coming from a man of his rank.
The building was separated from the main barracks: a red-brick construction with windows that still had curtains, functional heating, and a silence that contrasted sharply with the night sounds of the camp—the moans of chronic pain, the stifled weeping.
When the door closed behind me, Klaus von Richtberg was sitting in a leather armchair, his uniform impeccable, a glass of red wine in his hand. He didn’t smile; he didn’t make a threat. He simply told me, in fluent French without a noticeable accent, to sit down. And then, he started talking about Baudelaire.”
The Illusion of Civility
This was undoubtedly the most disturbing aspect of everything that was to follow. He didn’t treat her like a prisoner during those initial moments. He conversed as if they were in a Parisian salon before the war, discussing literature, philosophy, and music. He knew details about her hometown that even she didn’t know. He mentioned specific wines from the Beaune region, cited entire passages of French poetry, and talked about his own youth spent studying in Heidelberg.
It was as if he had constructed an illusion of civility—a bubble where the concentration camp did not exist, where thousands of women were not dying just a few meters away. And this illusion was infinitely more terrifying than explicit violence, because it demanded that she participate, that she answer, and that she pretend normality while her humanity was slowly being dismantled.
The weeks that followed established a routine in General von Richtberg’s private quarters that defied all moral and human logic. Arianne de l’Orme was removed from the forced labor to which the other prisoners were subjected daily. She no longer wore the standard striped uniform. Civilian clothes were provided to her—simple but clean, free from the stains of sweat and dirt that marked every fabric in Ravensbrück.
Her food rations increased substantially: white bread, sometimes cheese, occasionally even meat. While women were dying from diarrhea and malnutrition in the barracks less than a hundred meters away, she ate at a table set with a tablecloth and silver cutlery. This contradiction created a guilt that gnawed at her mind more deeply than any direct physical violence. She knew that every bite she took was a symbolic betrayal of those who shared her fate. But refusing meant an immediate return to the barracks, and likely a collective punishment for the others.
An Ideological Experiment
General Klaus von Richtberg belonged to a special category of war criminals that post-war courts would later have difficulty classifying. He did not order mass executions. He did not directly participate in the sadistic medical experiments carried out by SS doctors in the camp. His cruelty was more subtle, more perverse, rooted in a deep ideological conviction that certain human beings deserved to be possessed, controlled, and reduced to functions serving a superior world vision.
Arianne quickly learned that von Richtberg was not motivated by primitive lust. What he sought was far more complex and sinister. He wanted to create something—to prove through her that even a French resistance fighter, a member of a people he considered decadent and weakened, could be remodeled, reprogrammed, and transformed into an extension of his will. Pregnancy was not an accident; it was the central objective.
In the archives of the Third Reich accessible today in several European memorial institutions, documents reveal the existence of eugenics programs less well-known than Lebensborn, but equally charged with ideology. Some SS officers—particularly those from the traditional Prussian aristocracy—conducted personal experiments aimed at producing lineages they considered genetically superior.
Klaus von Richtberg belonged to this category. He had lost his only son during the invasion of Poland in 1939, and his wife, a barren Bavarian aristocrat who had suffered several miscarriages, lived as a recluse on the family estate near Potsdam. To von Richtberg, Arianne represented not only a young woman in good reproductive health, but also an ideological challenge. If she carried his child, if she survived, and if that child was born healthy, it would confirm in his twisted mind that his genetic lineage could transcend supposed French racial weaknesses. It was applied racial science on an individual scale—a form of reproductive violence rooted in the darkest Nazi theories.
The Golden Cage and Psychological Survival
The months passed with unbearable slowness. Arianne was transferred to a small house located on the immediate outskirts of the camp, monitored day and night by two female SS guards who never spoke. She had access to a private room—an unimaginable luxury for any prisoner—but the windows were barricaded and the door was locked from the outside.
An SS doctor came to examine her every week, checking the development of the fetus with absolute clinical coldness. No questions were asked about her emotional or psychological well-being. She was treated exactly as what she had become in the mind of von Richtberg and the system he represented: a biological incubator serving an ideological project of the SS.
During this time, the war continued to devastate Europe. The Allies had landed in Sicily in July 1943. The Eastern Front was turning into a nightmare for the Wehrmacht after the catastrophic defeat at Stalingrad in February of that same year. But inside that small house on the outskirts of Ravensbrück, time seemed suspended in an airtight bubble where there was only constant surveillance and forced waiting.
During this period, Arianne developed a psychological survival strategy that few people could understand without having experienced a similar situation: she mentally dissociated from her own body. The child growing inside her was not hers. Nor was it von Richtberg’s, despite what he believed. It was a separate entity—a being that deserved a chance to live, even if it was the product of abominable circumstances.
This internal distinction allowed her not to sink into madness or complete despair. She spoke mentally to the child, telling stories of France from before the war, of the vineyards of Beaune in the spring, and of the readings she used to enjoy under the trees on the university campus in Lyon. She created an imaginary world where this child could exist freely, far away from barbed wire and uniforms.
But every time von Richtberg came to see her—usually once a week—this protective bubble shattered. He would place a hand on her stomach with an expression of almost paternal satisfaction. He talked of the future, evoking a world where Germany had won the war and where this child would be raised according to the principles of the Reich. He saw no contradiction in his words; to him, all of it was perfectly logical and morally justifiable.
The Birth of Maximilian
In January 1944, as the pregnancy entered its seventh month, something began to change in von Richtberg’s attitude. News from the front became increasingly grim for Germany. Allied bombings intensified the pressure on German cities, and the Reich’s logistics began to show signs of unbearable strain. Ravensbrück, like all concentration camps, was receiving contradictory orders from Berlin: increase the output of forced labor while reducing rations; accelerate the transfer of prisoners to arms factories while maintaining strict internal order.
Von Richtberg seemed more and more preoccupied, distracted, and less present. During his visits, he spoke less, remaining silent for long stretches, staring out the window as if trying to see something beyond the horizon that was escaping him. Arianne perceived this crack in his confidence, but dared not say anything. Silence had become her only form of resistance—refusing to give von Richtberg the satisfaction of any emotional reaction whatsoever.
On March 3, 1944, at 4:27 a.m., Arianne de l’Orme gave birth to a boy in an improvised room in the infirmary reserved for the SS personnel of Ravensbrück. No prisoners were allowed in this section of the camp. The delivery was supervised by an SS doctor and two nurses who handled the event with mechanical efficiency, completely devoid of empathy.
The pain was intense and prolonged, yet Arianne endured it in almost complete silence, refusing to scream or cry in front of her captors. The child weighed 3.2 kilograms, had dark hair, and possessed obviously healthy lungs, judging by his vigorous cries. But Arianne was allowed to hold him in her arms for only a few minutes.
The doctor took him away almost immediately, examined him quickly under a harsh light, noted something in a register, and then handed him to one of the nurses, who left the room without a word. Arianne asked where they were taking her child. Nobody answered. She repeated the question—this time with a desperate force that broke the silence she had maintained for months. Still, there was no response. They administered a sedative. When she woke up, she was back in the small house, alone, with stitches and an unbearable void in her stomach and her soul.
The Final Separation
Klaus von Richtberg came to see her the next day. He entered the room without knocking, as always, but his expression was different. There was a triumphant gleam in his eyes—a satisfaction that Arianne had never seen before. He told her that the child was in perfect health, that he had been registered under the surname von Richtberg, and that he would be raised on the family estate in East Prussia by his wife, who had agreed to adopt him as her own son.
This decision had been planned from the very beginning. Arianne had never had a voice in the matter. She was not a mother in the eyes of von Richtberg; she had been a vessel, a biological tool. Now that her function was fulfilled, all that remained was to decide her fate.
Von Richtberg explained to her with chilling calmness that she would never see the child again. He told her she had to understand that all of this had served a higher purpose, and that she had, in her own way, contributed to something greater than herself. Then, he stood up and left the room. That was the last time they ever spoke to each other.
Return to the Ranks
The weeks that followed were the darkest of Arianne’s entire existence. She was sent back to the general barracks and reinstated among the ordinary prisoners, as if nothing had happened. But everything had changed. Her body bore the visible marks of childbirth, and the other women—although they asked no direct questions—knew she had endured something unspeakable.
Some avoided her as if she were contaminated by a form of collective shame. Others showed silent compassion, discreetly sharing extra rations or offering her a corner of a blanket during the freezing nights. But Arianne spoke to no one. She carried out her assigned tasks with mechanical obedience, working in sewing workshops where prisoners repaired German uniforms. She spent her nights lying on the hard wooden berths, her eyes wide open in the darkness, endlessly rehashing the fleeting image of that tiny face she had barely been given time to see.
In the historical archives available today—including those of the Ravensbrück Memorial in Germany and the Documentation Center on Deportation in France—several testimonies from survivors speak of similar cases of reproductive exploitation in Nazi camps. Although these situations are rarely detailed in general history textbooks, they are part of a well-documented reality. Female prisoners, particularly those considered physically attractive or in good reproductive health, were used by certain SS officers for personal or institutional eugenic projects.
The Lebensborn program, officially intended to encourage the birth of racially pure children, also concealed practices involving the kidnapping and forced adoption of children born in circumstances similar to Arianne’s. Thousands of children were torn from their mothers and integrated into German families, their original identities systematically erased. Arianne de l’Orme’s son was just one among many. Yet, every individual story carries a weight that cannot be diluted by statistics.
The Collapse of the Camp and the Death Marches
In April 1944, while the Allies were preparing for the Normandy landings that would decisively change the course of the war, Ravensbrück was descending into increasing organizational chaos. Orders from Berlin became more and more erratic. Some prisoners were hastily transferred to other camps, others were executed for no apparent reason, and a few were released in an entirely inexplicable manner. Nazi bureaucratic logic, already cruel and absurd in normal times, gradually disintegrated under the pressure of impending defeat.
Arianne watched all of this with a detachment that resembled apathy, but which was, in reality, a form of psychological defense. She had stopped hoping. She had stopped planning. She simply existed, day after day, without looking toward the future. Yet, hidden in a dark corner of her mind, an obsessive question refused to disappear: What would happen to her child if Germany lost the war? Would he be killed by association with a war criminal? Would he be lost in the chaos of the Reich’s collapse, or would he survive somewhere, bearing a name that was not his own, forever ignorant of where he truly came from?
After June 6, 1944—the day of the Allied landings in Normandy—news filtered slowly into Ravensbrück. The guards became more nervous, more brutal. Summary executions increased. Documents began to be burned in bonfires hastily lit behind the administrative buildings. The order to destroy evidence was clear, but despite these efforts, thousands of pages of registers, medical reports, and internal correspondence survived the war—hidden, forgotten, or simply ignored in the frantic rush of defeat.
It is thanks to these archival fragments that Arianne de l’Orme’s story could be reconstructed decades later, when researchers began cross-referencing oral testimonies with official documents found in the basements of old Nazi administrative buildings. Her name appeared in a medical register dated March 1944, mentioning a birth, a weight, and a precise time—nothing more. No emotion, no humanity. Just numbers and clinical facts. But that yellowed fragment of paper proved that what she had lived through was not an isolated nightmare; it was a procedure—something systematic, planned, and institutionalized.
On April 30, 1945, while Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his Berlin bunker and the Red Army advanced inexorably toward the heart of Nazi Germany, Ravensbrück was evacuated in a disorganized panic. Thousands of prisoners were forced to march northwest in what would become known as the Death Marches: endless columns of starving, sick, exhausted women forced to advance under the threat of weapons, even as their guards themselves no longer knew where to go or what to do. Many died along the way, shot down where they fell as exhaustion overcame them. Others escaped into the surrounding forests, taking advantage of the widespread confusion.
Arianne de l’Orme was in one of these columns. She had been walking for three days with virtually no sleep, occasionally sharing a hard crust of bread with a Polish prisoner who did not speak French, but with whom she had developed a form of silent communication based on gestures and glances. On the fourth day, as the column crossed a wooded area near the border with Mecklenburg, Allied planes flew over the region. The SS guards panicked, some abandoning their posts to flee. In the confusion, Arianne and several other women slipped between the trees and vanished.
Survival in a Ruined Land
She spent nearly two weeks wandering through the ruined German countryside. Germany in May 1945 was an apocalyptic landscape: cities reduced to rubble by bombings, German refugees fleeing the Soviet advance, deserting soldiers hiding in barns, and orphaned children roaming the roads. Arianne avoided all contact as much as possible, foraging for food in abandoned fields, drinking water from streams, and sleeping in destroyed buildings.
She still wore the striped uniform of a prisoner, torn and soiled. Yet, it served as a form of protection. Anyone who saw her understood immediately that she was a camp survivor, and even amidst the chaos of the German defeat, few people dared to harm her.
In early June, she was taken in by a unit of the American army that had established a repatriation center for displaced persons near the town of Schwerin. She gave her name and nationality and was officially registered as a survivor of Ravensbrück. They provided her with civilian clothing, food, and a bed in a makeshift barracks. But when asked if she had family in France, she didn’t know what to answer.
The journey back to France took several weeks. Transport infrastructure was destroyed, and roads were clogged with millions of refugees moving in every direction. Arianne traveled first by military truck to the French border, and then in crowded train cars packed with other returnees—some exuberant at the thought of going home, others silent and haunted like herself.
When she finally arrived in Beaune in early July 1945, she found that her hometown had survived the physical devastation of the war far better than many other French regions. But the atmosphere was strange. People went about their business with a forced normality, as if they were collectively trying to forget what had just happened.
Arianne reunited with her mother, who seemed to have aged twenty years, and learned that her brother Étienne had been shot by the Gestapo in 1943 after being captured during a sabotage operation. Her mother wept upon seeing her, embracing her with desperate strength, but asked no questions about what she had endured—and Arianne said nothing.
A Life Built on Silence
The months that followed were marked by a heavy silence. Arianne lived with her mother, helped with daily tasks, and walked through the vineyards she had known as a child, but everything felt unreal to her. She suffered from nightmares almost every night, waking up drenched in sweat with her heart racing, seeing faces, scenes, and moments that she desperately wished to erase.
Above all, she thought of her child. He would now be a year and a half old. Was he walking? Was he talking? Was he even alive? Had he survived the collapse of the Reich? And if he was alive, who was taking care of him? Von Richtberg’s wife? Or had he been abandoned in an orphanage somewhere in Germany?
Arianne had no way of knowing. She did not even know the exact name that had been given to him, and above all, she did not know if she had the right to search for him. Was this child truly hers? Did she have any rights over him after everything that had happened? These questions tormented her, but she shared them with no one.
In 1947, Arianne accepted a marriage proposal from a man she had known vaguely before the war: a quiet, respectful accountant named Henri Moreau, who had served in the Free French forces in North Africa. Henri knew that she had been deported, but he knew no details, and Arianne told him nothing. She agreed to marry him not out of passion, but because she needed structure, normality, and an acceptable social role that would allow her to continue existing without constantly having to explain her past.
They had two children: a daughter in 1949 and a son in 1951. Arianne was an attentive, protective mother, yet she remained emotionally distant—unable to fully surrender to tenderness without a part of herself internally pulling back. Henri never understood this distance, but he never questioned her about it. Their marriage lasted thirty-eight years, until Henri’s death in 1985. Through all those years, Arianne never spoke a word about Ravensbrück, about von Richtberg, or about the child who had been torn from her arms in March 1944.
Breaking the Silence
It was not until 2007, when she was eighty-three years old and living alone in a retirement home near Beaune, that Arianne finally agreed to testify for an oral history project initiated by a French historian specializing in the deportation of women. The interview lasted six hours, spread over several days. Arianne spoke slowly and with clinical precision, without weeping, without raising her voice—as if she were telling the story of someone else entirely.
The historian recorded every word, took detailed notes, and promised to search through German and French archives to find documentary evidence confirming her account. What she discovered was both overwhelming and incomplete. Klaus von Richtberg’s name did indeed appear in the administrative records of Ravensbrück between 1943 and 1944. A child registered under the name of Maximilian von Richtberg was born on March 3, 1944. However, no mention of the biological mother was included in the surviving documents.
Attempts were made to trace what had become of this child in adulthood, but they failed. Either he had changed his name, had died during the war, or was living somewhere today without knowing where he truly came from. Arianne passed away at the age of eighty-nine without ever seeing her firstborn son again.
The Legacy of Forgotten Victims
The story of Arianne de l’Orme does not end with her death. She continues to live in the archives, in recorded testimonies, and in the documentary fragments that prove her ordeal was not an isolated aberration, but a particularly cruel manifestation of a system that institutionalized dehumanization on an industrial scale.
Thousands of women across occupied Europe were victims of systematic sexual violence during the Second World War—whether in concentration camps, in occupied territories, or in the forced military brothels established by the Nazi and Japanese armies. Yet, unlike more visible war crimes such as massacres or the gas chambers, this abuse remained excluded from official historical accounts for a very long time.
When victims survived, they carried a double burden: the trauma of the violence itself, and the suffocating social silence that surrounded them afterward. Speaking out meant risking stigmatization, family rejection, and widespread incomprehension. And so, like Arianne, many remained silent for decades.
What makes Arianne’s testimony particularly important from a historical perspective is not only what it reveals about the mechanisms of Nazi violence, but also what it illustrates about the limits of post-war justice. Klaus von Richtberg was never brought to trial. No record of his arrest or prosecution exists in the judicial archives of Nuremberg or subsequent trials. It is likely that he vanished in the chaotic collapse of the Reich—perhaps fleeing to Argentina or another Latin American country that harbored fleeing Nazi criminals, perhaps committing suicide like so many other SS officers, or simply assuming a false identity and living quietly somewhere in West Germany for the remainder of his life.
Thousands of Nazis responsible for abominable crimes escaped justice in this manner—protected by clandestine networks, aided by the complacency of certain Western governments more concerned with the Cold War than with pursuing war criminals, or simply lost within the overwhelming scale of identifying and capturing every culprit.
The child born of this violence—Maximilian von Richtberg, according to official registries—remains a historical enigma. Assuming he survived the war and the collapse of the Reich, he would be eighty-two years old today. Does he live somewhere in Germany, completely unaware of the true circumstances of his birth? Did he discover at some point that he was not the biological son of the woman he called mother? Did he actively search for his origins and uncover a truth he chose never to share publicly? These questions will likely remain unanswered, but they raise profound moral and philosophical reflections on the legacy of trauma, the intergenerational transmission of violence, and the limits of what we can know about the past, even with all modern historical research tools at our disposal.
Epilogue: The Unanswered Question
Arianne de l’Orme’s testimony was finally published in 2015 in an academic collection entitled Forgotten Voices: Testimonies of Deported Women, 1939–1945, released by a French academic publishing house specializing in the history of the Second World War. The book did not achieve great commercial success. It was read primarily by historians, students, and descendants of deportees seeking to understand what their loved ones had endured.
Yet, for those who read it, the impact was profound. Numerous readers wrote to the publisher to say that Arianne’s account had fundamentally changed their understanding of what it truly meant to survive a concentration camp—showing that survival was not merely physical, but psychological, moral, and existential, and that people carry invisible wounds throughout their entire lives without anyone around them ever knowing or truly understanding.
In French schools, when the Second World War is taught, lessons focus on major battles, political leaders, crucial dates, and death tolls. Concentration camps are mentioned—usually Auschwitz, sometimes Dachau or Buchenwald. But Ravensbrück, the largest camp built exclusively for women, remains largely unknown to the general public. Individual stories like Arianne de l’Orme’s—which do not fit neatly into simplified categories of heroes and victims, and which raise uncomfortable questions about sexual violence, forced motherhood, and the moral complexity of survival—are rarely told.
However, it is precisely these stories that reveal the true depths of Nazi brutality: not only the horror of the gas chambers and mass executions, but the more insidious horror of the methodical destruction of individual humanity—the systematic dismantling of everything that makes a person who they are: their choices, their dignity, and their ability to recognize themselves.
Arianne de l’Orme lived for eighty-nine years. She survived Ravensbrück, Klaus von Richtberg, the loss of her child, the stifling silence of post-war France, and the crushing weight of carrying alone a secret that would have destroyed most people. She raised two children who never knew they had a half-brother somewhere in the world. She maintained a facade of normality for more than six decades—working as a municipal librarian in Beaune, participating in local community life, attending weddings, and celebrating the baptisms of her grandchildren. No one around her knew. No one ever suspected a thing.
And perhaps that is the most disturbing lesson of her story: that we live surrounded by people carrying entire universes of pain and trauma that we never see. Behind every ordinary face may lie an extraordinary tale of survival, silent resistance, and dignity maintained against all odds. If we do not take the time to listen, to record, and to preserve these testimonies before it is too late, they will disappear forever—taking with them truths that official histories will never capture.
The final addition to Arianne de l’Orme’s recording, made just a few months before her death, ended with a sentence she uttered after a very long silence. The historian had already turned off the tape recorder, believing the interview was over, but Arianne raised her hand, asking for it to be turned back on. She wanted to add one last thing.
When the device began recording again, she looked directly into the lens of the camera documenting the session and said, in French, with absolute clarity despite her advanced age:
“There is one question I have never been asked, but that I ask myself every single day: if I found that child today, if he were standing right in front of me… what would I say to him? I don’t know. I still don’t know.”
