DG. Florida puppy dies after being left in garage, starved; owner arrested, deputies say

A young puppy named Sunset has died after authorities say she was left alone in a detached garage without adequate food, water, light, or ventilation. The case has led to the arrest of an 18-year-old Florida man and renewed conversations about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

Puppy Found in Critical Condition

According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a Palm Coast apartment complex on July 1 after receiving reports of a severely malnourished dog inside a locked garage.

Investigators said the female Bluetick Coonhound–Australian Shepherd mix was discovered lying in a puddle of her own urine. Authorities alleged she had been left without:

  • Adequate food
  • Fresh water
  • Proper ventilation
  • Sufficient lighting
  • A means of escape

Due to her critical condition, the puppy was immediately transported to a veterinary hospital for emergency treatment.

Puppy Succumbs Despite Veterinary Care

Veterinarians worked to save Sunset after she was rescued, but her condition was too severe.

According to investigators, the puppy died on July 4 from organ failure resulting from prolonged starvation.

Her death has become the central focus of the criminal investigation.

Investigation Identifies the Dog’s Owner

Authorities identified Chance Jones, 18, as Sunset’s owner.

According to investigators, Jones had received the puppy from a homeowner in Bunnell whose dog had recently given birth to a litter.

Detectives believe Sunset was placed inside the detached garage on June 30 while Jones was visiting a relative.

Initially, authorities say Jones denied owning the puppy after she was discovered.

Statements Made During the Investigation

According to the charging affidavit, Jones later told investigators that:

  • The puppy usually stayed at his mother’s residence.
  • He was frequently away from home for extended periods.
  • He believed family members would care for the dog while he was absent.
  • He personally fed the puppy only when returning every few weeks.

Investigators also reported that Jones said he placed Sunset inside the garage because he did not want his cousin to see how severely malnourished the puppy had become.

He additionally cited transportation difficulties as one reason he struggled to care for the animal.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case.

Criminal Charges Filed

Following the investigation, Jones was arrested and charged with:

  • Aggravated animal cruelty
  • Unlawful confinement of an animal

According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, he was booked into the county detention facility and was being held on a $3,000 bond.

The charges remain allegations, and the case will proceed through the judicial process.

Why Proper Care Matters

Dogs rely entirely on their caregivers for their basic needs. Animal welfare organizations emphasize that every pet should always have access to:

  • Fresh drinking water
  • Nutritious food
  • Shelter with adequate ventilation
  • Regular veterinary care
  • Safe living conditions
  • Daily monitoring and attention

When an owner is unable to provide appropriate care, experts encourage seeking assistance from family members, rescue organizations, veterinarians, or local animal shelters before an animal’s health is placed at risk.

A Reminder of Responsible Pet Ownership

Cases like Sunset’s highlight the serious responsibilities that come with adopting a companion animal. Providing consistent food, water, shelter, medical care, and supervision is essential for an animal’s well-being.

Animal welfare agencies encourage anyone who witnesses suspected neglect or abuse to report their concerns promptly so animals can receive help before conditions become life-threatening.
