Prince Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are entering a new chapter in their philanthropic efforts following the departure of their longest-serving aide, James Holt. His transition comes shortly after the announcement that the Archewell Foundation is being restructured under a new name, Archewell Philanthropies, reflecting an evolution in the couple’s charitable focus and global outreach.
James Holt has worked closely with Prince Harry for nearly a decade, beginning during Harry’s time as a senior working royal in the United Kingdom and continuing after the Sussexes relocated to the United States in 2020. His departure from day-to-day leadership marks a significant organizational shift, though it has been confirmed that he will remain involved in an advisory capacity.
A Longstanding Professional Relationship
Holt first collaborated with Prince Harry while the Duke was still based at Kensington Palace, supporting initiatives focused on mental health awareness, particularly among military personnel and veterans. These early projects laid the groundwork for what would later become a central pillar of Harry’s public work, both within and outside the royal family.
When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from official royal duties and settled in California, Holt relocated to Los Angeles to help establish and lead their new philanthropic organization. His role expanded significantly during this period, encompassing strategic leadership, partnerships with international charities, and the operational development of Archewell’s programs.
Over the past five years, Holt has been instrumental in shaping the organization’s approach to social impact, including initiatives related to mental health, online safety, community resilience, and humanitarian assistance.
Transition and Return to the United Kingdom
Holt’s decision to step away from his leadership role is tied primarily to personal and family considerations. After several years living in the United States, he has chosen to return to London with his family. According to official clarification, this move prompted a planned transition rather than an abrupt departure.
As part of this process, Holt will gradually hand over operational responsibilities at Archewell Philanthropies in the coming months. The organization has indicated that this transition has been carefully managed to ensure continuity across ongoing projects and partnerships.
Importantly, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed that Holt will continue to work with them as a senior philanthropic advisor. In this capacity, he is expected to provide strategic guidance and support international initiatives, including overseas humanitarian visits planned for 2026.
Archewell’s Evolution Into Archewell Philanthropies
The timing of Holt’s transition coincides with a broader restructuring of the Sussexes’ nonprofit work. In recent weeks, Archewell announced that its charitable arm would operate under the name Archewell Philanthropies, serving as an umbrella for all philanthropic initiatives supported by the couple.
According to information published on the organization’s official website, the rebranding reflects five years of growth and refinement. The updated structure is designed to support a wider range of global causes while maintaining a focused approach to long-term impact.
Prince Harry and Meghan launched their nonprofit organization in April 2020, shortly after completing their final royal engagements. Since then, Archewell has supported initiatives addressing mental health, digital safety, gender equity, disaster relief, and community-based resilience, often in collaboration with established charities and grassroots organizations.
Focus on Measurable Social Impact
Under Holt’s leadership, Archewell emphasized partnerships with reputable nonprofit organizations rather than operating large-scale programs independently. This model aligns with best practices in philanthropy, prioritizing accountability, local expertise, and measurable outcomes.
One area of particular focus has been online safety and the impact of digital harm on children and families. Archewell has supported research, advocacy, and direct assistance for families affected by harmful online content, working alongside policy experts and technology accountability groups.
The organization has also contributed to humanitarian relief efforts through established international partners, ensuring that aid is delivered through recognized and accountable channels.
Recognition From the Sussexes
In response to Holt’s transition, Prince Harry and Meghan publicly acknowledged his long-term contribution to their work. They highlighted his role in building Archewell from its earliest stages and credited his leadership with helping define the organization’s mission and operational standards.
They also emphasized that Holt’s departure from daily operations does not signal a change in Archewell’s direction. Instead, they described the transition as part of a natural evolution, with systems now in place to support continued growth and impact.
Continuity and the Road Ahead
Archewell Philanthropies will continue to oversee the Sussexes’ charitable activities, while their media projects remain separate under Archewell Productions. This distinction reflects a clearer organizational structure, separating philanthropic initiatives from content creation and entertainment partnerships.
Looking ahead, Prince Harry and Meghan are expected to maintain an active philanthropic schedule, balancing their charitable commitments with family life and professional projects. The organization has indicated that its work will increasingly focus on sustainable, long-term solutions rather than short-term interventions.
Holt’s ongoing advisory role is expected to support this strategy, particularly in maintaining international relationships and ensuring continuity during leadership transitions.
A Measured Organizational Change
Leadership changes are a common and often healthy development in nonprofit organizations, particularly as they mature. In this case, Archewell Philanthropies has emphasized that the transition was planned and collaborative, with a clear focus on stability.
By retaining Holt as a senior advisor, the Sussexes have signaled their intention to preserve institutional knowledge while allowing for new leadership perspectives. This approach aligns with governance best practices and reflects the organization’s commitment to long-term effectiveness.
Conclusion
James Holt’s decision to step back from his leadership role at Archewell Philanthropies marks the end of an important chapter in the Sussexes’ philanthropic journey, but not the end of their professional collaboration. His continued involvement as an advisor ensures continuity as the organization enters its next phase.
As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle refine their charitable structure and expand their global initiatives, Archewell Philanthropies remains positioned as the central platform for their humanitarian work. The transition reflects growth, not retreat, and underscores the couple’s stated commitment to creating lasting, positive social impact through carefully managed and accountable philanthropy.
