The Prince and Princess of Wales’ longtime nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, has received formal recognition for more than a decade of devoted service to the royal family. In the latest New Year Honours list, she was awarded the Royal Victorian Medal (Silver), an honor personally bestowed by the monarch to individuals who have rendered exceptional service to the Royal Household.
The award highlights the often unseen but vital role played by trusted household staff who support members of the royal family in their daily lives.
A Trusted Presence in the Wales Household
Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo joined the household of Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, in 2014, shortly after the birth of Prince George. Over the past 11 years, she has helped care for the couple’s three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Her role has involved supporting the children’s daily routines, travel schedules, and well-being while maintaining the privacy and stability that the Wales family prioritizes for their young family.
Although royal staff rarely seek public attention, Borrallo has occasionally been seen accompanying the family during official engagements and overseas tours, underscoring her trusted position within the household.
Professional Training and Background
Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo is a Spanish national who trained at the Norland College, a highly respected childcare institution based in Bath, England. Norland nannies are known for their rigorous education, which combines early childhood development with practical skills such as nutrition, safeguarding, and child psychology.
Norland College graduates are also trained in discretion and confidentiality, qualities considered essential when working with high-profile families. The Princess of Wales has previously been open about the importance she places on early childhood development, making Borrallo’s professional background particularly aligned with the family’s values.
What the Royal Victorian Medal Represents
The Royal Victorian Order was established in 1896 by Queen Victoria and remains unique among British honors because it is awarded at the personal discretion of the reigning monarch, rather than on the advice of the government.
The Royal Victorian Medal (RVM) is granted to individuals who have provided loyal and distinguished service to the monarchy or Royal Household. Recipients often include household staff, aides, and individuals whose contributions are long-standing and personal in nature.
Receiving the silver level of the medal reflects a significant period of dedicated service and trust. It is widely regarded as a meaningful acknowledgment within royal circles, particularly for those who work behind the scenes.
Recognition Through the New Year Honours List
The New Year Honours list is published annually and recognizes individuals from a wide range of professions, including public service, charity, education, and contributions to the Royal Household.
While senior royals frequently headline the list, staff members such as Borrallo are also included when their service merits recognition. Her inclusion demonstrates the value placed on continuity, professionalism, and care within the royal family’s private sphere.
Maintaining Stability for the Royal Children
Prince William and Princess Catherine have consistently emphasized the importance of providing their children with a stable and supportive upbringing, despite the public nature of royal life.
Having a long-serving nanny has contributed to that sense of continuity, particularly during periods of transition, such as international travel, the family’s move from Kensington Palace to Windsor, and the children’s progression through school.
Experts in child development often note that consistent caregivers play a crucial role in supporting emotional security during childhood, especially in families with demanding schedules.
A Role Rooted in Discretion
Royal nannies are expected to maintain strict confidentiality, and Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo has adhered to that tradition throughout her tenure. She has not given interviews or public statements, and her work has remained largely out of the spotlight.
This discretion is a hallmark of royal service and is frequently cited as one of the reasons such staff members earn the trust of the family they serve.
Part of a Long Royal Tradition
The British royal family has a long history of honoring household staff who demonstrate exceptional loyalty and professionalism. Previous recipients of the Royal Victorian Order have included footmen, private secretaries, drivers, and childcare professionals.
These honors reflect the monarchy’s reliance on experienced staff to ensure the smooth functioning of both public duties and private family life.
Public Reaction and Respect for Royal Staff
News of Borrallo’s award has been met with positive reactions from royal observers and members of the public, many of whom expressed appreciation for the recognition of behind-the-scenes roles.
While the Wales family did not issue a separate public statement, the award itself serves as an official acknowledgment of her contribution.
Looking Ahead
Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo’s recognition comes at a time when the Prince and Princess of Wales continue to balance increasing public responsibilities with family life. Her ongoing role is expected to remain focused on supporting the children as they grow older and take on more public engagements.
The Royal Victorian Medal serves not only as a personal honor but also as a reminder of the importance of dedicated service within the Royal Household.
Conclusion
After more than a decade of caring for the children of the Prince and Princess of Wales, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo has received one of the monarchy’s most personal honors. The Royal Victorian Medal (Silver) recognizes her professionalism, loyalty, and contribution to the royal family’s private life.
Her award highlights the essential work carried out by trusted staff members who help ensure stability and continuity within the modern royal family, often far from public view.
