As the holiday season approaches, millions of people around the world prepare to exchange festive greetings with friends and family. Christmas cards remain one of the most cherished traditions of the season, offering a personal touch that brings joy to households everywhere. While many people send cards to those closest to them, fewer realize that it is also possible to receive a Christmas card from members of the British Royal Family—including the Prince and Princess of Wales.
This tradition has become especially meaningful for many royal fans who enjoy sending well-wishes to the Royal Family each year. In return, recipients may receive an official reply from royal offices in the form of a holiday card or a printed message of thanks. The process is simple, and, according to guidance commonly shared by royal watchers and etiquette resources, anyone from anywhere in the world can participate by sending correspondence using standard international mail.
The Royal Family’s Christmas Card Tradition
Each December, the Royal Family releases an official Christmas card featuring a recent family photograph. These cards are traditionally shared publicly through official Royal Family social media accounts and websites. However, what often surprises people is that those who send holiday greetings to royal residences frequently receive a formal reply acknowledging their message.
These reply cards typically consist of a pre-printed note of appreciation and a photograph of the member of the Royal Family to whom the message was addressed. While these are not personalized messages, they are a meaningful keepsake for many households and collectors who enjoy royal traditions.
How to Request a Christmas Card from the Royal Family
Receiving a reply from the Royal Family is straightforward and does not require special status or membership. Based on publicly available guidance and widely recognized etiquette for sending letters to royal residences, the process involves mailing your own greeting card to the appropriate official address.
Here is a simple step-by-step overview:
-
Choose or create your own Christmas card.
Many people include a short, polite holiday message. No special format is required. -
Include your return address.
This is essential so that a reply can be delivered. Writing it on the envelope is sufficient. -
Apply the correct postage for international or domestic delivery.
This ensures your card reaches the Royal Household without delay. -
Send your card to the correct royal address.
While members of the Royal Family receive large volumes of mail, offices typically issue formal replies to holiday greetings.
