A new biography on Prince Andrew is drawing attention for its detailed look at the Duke of York’s personal and professional life, including his association with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein and socialite Ghislaine Maxwell. The book, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, is written by royal historian Andrew Lownie and examines the events that shaped Prince Andrew’s public image over the past three decades.
A Look Inside Andrew Lownie’s Biography
The biography provides an in-depth exploration of Prince Andrew’s upbringing, royal duties, and later years marked by controversy. Andrew Lownie, known for his well-researched royal histories, reportedly conducted extensive interviews and reviewed public records to compile the material.
In Entitled, Lownie revisits Prince Andrew’s friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, the American financier who was convicted of serious crimes in the United States before his death in 2019. According to publicly available information and prior media investigations, Prince Andrew maintained a friendship with Epstein during the 1990s and early 2000s, a connection that later drew global scrutiny.
The Duke of York’s Relationship with Epstein
Prince Andrew has publicly stated that he first met Epstein in 1999 through Ghislaine Maxwell, a British socialite and long-time associate of the financier. In a 2019 BBC Newsnight interview, the Duke said that their friendship continued for several years but ended in 2010.
According to Lownie’s biography, the association between the two men may have been more extensive than previously acknowledged. The author writes that their connection included shared travel and social events in both the United Kingdom and the United States. While Lownie includes information from sources close to the royal household, all claims are presented in a historical context and do not include unverified or defamatory allegations.
Publicly, Buckingham Palace has emphasized that Prince Andrew regrets his association with Epstein and that he has expressed sympathy for the victims involved in Epstein’s criminal activities. The Palace has also confirmed that the Duke continues to deny any involvement in or knowledge of Epstein’s misconduct.
Sarah Ferguson’s Reported Links
The biography also discusses Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, and her interactions with Epstein. Ferguson, who was married to Prince Andrew from 1986 to 1996, previously confirmed that Epstein helped pay off a portion of her personal debts in 2010, amounting to approximately $20,000.
In a statement released that same year, Ferguson described the assistance as a “gigantic error of judgment” and publicly apologized, stating that she intended to repay the funds and permanently cut ties with Epstein.
Lownie’s book explores how Ferguson’s long-standing friendship with her former husband has continued despite their divorce. The Duchess of York has frequently spoken about the close bond she maintains with Prince Andrew, describing him as a supportive co-parent to their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
Ghislaine Maxwell’s Role
Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of British publishing magnate Robert Maxwell, is believed to have played a key role in introducing Prince Andrew to Epstein. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in the United States for charges related to human trafficking and conspiracy.
Lownie’s biography suggests that Maxwell’s connections to British high society, including members of the royal family, gave her access to elite social circles in London and New York. Public records and photographs confirm that Prince Andrew, Maxwell, and Epstein were seen together at several public events in the early 2000s.
One widely circulated photograph from 2002 shows Maxwell and actor Kevin Spacey posing inside Buckingham Palace. Although the image generated significant media attention, Buckingham Palace has clarified that both individuals were admitted as guests during a public tour and that no security protocols were breached.
Media Coverage and Public Reaction
Since 2019, Prince Andrew’s association with Epstein has been the subject of intense media scrutiny. The Duke’s BBC interview in November of that year was intended to clarify his position but instead prompted widespread criticism. Following the interview, Prince Andrew announced he would step back from public duties “for the foreseeable future.”
In subsequent statements, Buckingham Palace reiterated that the Duke of York “unequivocally regrets his ill-judged association with Jeffrey Epstein” and that he continues to cooperate with legal authorities when requested. The Palace also underscored that Prince Andrew denies any involvement in or awareness of Epstein’s criminal activities.
A Portrait of a Royal Under Pressure
Lownie’s Entitled positions Prince Andrew’s life within the broader context of the modern British monarchy. The author examines how personal decisions, media narratives, and changing public expectations have shaped the Duke’s reputation.
The book also reflects on Andrew’s earlier years, including his military career in the Royal Navy, his service during the Falklands conflict, and his work as a trade envoy for the United Kingdom. These sections portray a royal figure whose early achievements were overshadowed by later controversies.
While Entitled contains commentary and analysis, the biography’s primary focus is historical — aiming to trace how the Duke of York’s friendships, financial decisions, and public appearances have influenced both his image and the wider royal institution.
Context Within the Royal Family
The biography arrives at a time when the British royal family continues to navigate public scrutiny following several high-profile events, including the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III. Prince Andrew’s reduced public role has been described by multiple royal commentators as part of a broader effort to modernize the monarchy’s image and restore public confidence.
Although Andrew remains a member of the royal family, he no longer undertakes official royal duties or represents the Crown in any capacity. His daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, occasionally attend royal events but hold no formal working roles within the monarchy.
Ethical Reflections and Legacy
Beyond the personal narrative, Entitled raises questions about privilege, accountability, and reputation in the modern age. Lownie’s portrayal of the Duke of York invites readers to reflect on how power and influence can intersect with personal choices, and how public trust can be affected by private associations.
The biography does not offer new accusations but rather compiles existing public information, official statements, and interviews into a cohesive historical account. By grounding the story in verified facts and documented events, it avoids sensationalism while encouraging readers to evaluate the lessons of the past.
Conclusion
Prince Andrew’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein remains one of the most scrutinized aspects of his public life. Andrew Lownie’s Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York contributes to this ongoing conversation by providing a detailed look at the Duke’s personal history, professional milestones, and the challenges that have defined his later years.
As the royal family continues to adapt to a new era, the biography offers insight into how moments of controversy can reshape the legacy of even the most established institutions.
