Malia and Sasha Obama, the daughters of former U.S. President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, have grown up in the public eye. Since leaving the White House in 2017, the sisters have each pursued their own paths in education, entertainment, and young adulthood, while occasionally being photographed at public events in Los Angeles. Their lives, once closely monitored during their father’s presidency, now reflect the independence and privacy typical of young adults forging their own identities.
Growing Up Under Public Scrutiny
Malia Ann Obama was born on July 4, 1998, and Natasha “Sasha” Obama on June 10, 2001. From 2009 to 2017, they lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue while their father served two terms as the 44th President of the United States.
During their time in Washington, D.C., the sisters were closely followed by the media but were also shielded by their parents, who emphasized normalcy and education. In a 2023 appearance on the Moments that Make Us podcast with Melinda French Gates, Michelle Obama reflected on raising her daughters in the spotlight, explaining that they learned early on how to conduct themselves under public attention while preparing for independent lives beyond the White House.
She noted that, despite living in a highly structured environment, she and Barack Obama focused on equipping their daughters with confidence, intelligence, and independence. This foundation has guided Malia and Sasha through their transition to adult life in the years since their family left Washington.
Malia Obama’s Educational and Career Journey
Malia completed high school in 2016. She then took a gap year before enrolling at Harvard University, where she graduated in 2021. During her gap year, she gained professional experience in the entertainment industry, working as a production assistant on Halle Berry’s CBS sci-fi drama series Extant.
Her interest in storytelling and filmmaking continued at Harvard. In 2024, under the name “Malia Ann,” she made her debut as a writer and director at the Sundance Film Festival with her short film The Heart. Her creative work has drawn attention from the film industry for its thoughtful themes and her distinctive artistic vision.
Sasha Obama’s Educational Accomplishments
Sasha Obama began her college education at the University of Michigan in 2019. Like many students, her first year was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced classes online for much of 2020. She later transferred to the University of Southern California (USC), where she completed a degree in sociology in 2023.
Sasha’s time at USC marked a shift toward life on the West Coast, where she and Malia currently share a home in Los Angeles. In interviews, Michelle Obama has expressed happiness that her daughters remain close and support each other as adults, emphasizing the importance of their bond beyond the public spotlight.
Public Sightings and Cultural Connections
Now in their twenties, Malia and Sasha live relatively private lives compared to their teenage years, though they are occasionally seen at social and cultural events in Los Angeles. Their presence at concerts, clubs, and entertainment venues has been documented by major entertainment outlets such as People, The Los Angeles Times, and E! News, which cover celebrity appearances in public spaces.
One publicized sighting occurred when they attended an event at a Hollywood venue where Canadian rapper Drake was also present. Drake, a Grammy-winning artist from Toronto, has previously expressed admiration for Barack Obama and once said he would be interested in portraying him in a biographical film. Barack Obama responded positively to this idea during a 2020 interview, praising Drake’s talent and saying that his daughters would likely support the idea.
These occasional public appearances are typical of young adults in Los Angeles and have attracted media attention largely due to their status as former first daughters. However, both Malia and Sasha continue to maintain their privacy and have not commented publicly on their personal social lives.
From White House to Hollywood
The transition from living in the White House to establishing independent lives in Los Angeles represents a major shift for the Obama sisters. In Los Angeles, Malia is pursuing a career in the entertainment industry, working behind the camera as a writer and director. Her creative work builds on her education at Harvard and her early experiences in television production.
Sasha, meanwhile, has focused on completing her education and exploring her interests in sociology and culture. The sisters’ shared home in Los Angeles has become a symbol of their independence and the close relationship they have maintained since childhood.
Maintaining Family Values in Public Life
Throughout their public lives, both sisters have emphasized — through their actions rather than frequent interviews — the importance of education, career development, and family connection. Barack and Michelle Obama have also shared glimpses into their family life over the years, always highlighting the balance between supporting their daughters’ growth and respecting their privacy.
During their father’s presidency, Malia and Sasha often accompanied their parents at major events, but their personal lives were kept largely out of the media. This careful balance continues today, as the sisters build their lives as young adults while remaining recognizable figures in American culture.
Cultural and Media Impact
Malia and Sasha Obama are part of a new generation of public figures who grew up in an era of social media and constant media coverage. Unlike previous presidential children, they have had to navigate both traditional press attention and the digital age’s rapid spread of information and images.
Their presence in the entertainment world — whether through Malia’s work in film or their attendance at cultural events — reflects broader shifts in how former first families engage with public life after leaving office. They have not taken on formal political roles but instead are building individual identities rooted in creativity, education, and modern American culture.
Conclusion
Malia and Sasha Obama’s lives after the White House illustrate a transition from intense public scrutiny to young adulthood marked by education, professional growth, and independence. While their occasional public appearances in Los Angeles draw media interest, their focus appears to remain on their careers and personal development.
Their journeys highlight how the children of public figures can grow into their own identities while maintaining strong family values. As they continue to establish their lives beyond Washington, Malia and Sasha stand as examples of how young adults raised in extraordinary circumstances can navigate privacy, public attention, and personal ambition in a balanced and grounded way.
