In a rare and candid conversation, Prince William has spoken openly about the impact of King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis and Princess Catherine’s health battle, describing the past year as one of the most challenging periods of his life.
The Prince of Wales reflected on how the royal family has navigated two significant health crises in a short span of time, offering insight into how these events have affected him personally and the family as a whole. His remarks were shared during an interview with actor Eugene Levy for the new season of The Reluctant Traveler, and have since been widely covered by reputable outlets including People.
King Charles’ Cancer Diagnosis: February 2024
On February 5, 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III had been diagnosed with cancer. The diagnosis followed a medical procedure to treat an enlarged prostate, during which unrelated cancer was discovered. Palace officials clarified at the time that the King did not have prostate cancer, but they did not disclose the exact type of cancer.
The Palace stated that King Charles had begun regular treatment immediately. In March 2024, he spent several days in hospital due to side effects related to his therapy. Throughout this period, the monarch, then 76 years old, continued to fulfill some of his official duties when his health allowed, maintaining a visible public presence despite undergoing treatment.
The King’s diagnosis marked a significant moment for the British monarchy, as it came during a time of transition and modernization under his leadership. He received widespread public support from citizens across the United Kingdom and from international figures.
Princess Catherine’s Diagnosis: March 2024
Just weeks after the Palace’s announcement about the King, the royal family faced another major health revelation. In March 2024, Princess Catherine (Kate Middleton), the Princess of Wales, shared a video message on Instagram revealing that she had been diagnosed with cancer following major abdominal surgery in January.
In the message, Catherine described the diagnosis as a “huge shock” to the family and explained that she had started preventative chemotherapy. Her openness about her health was praised by health organizations and advocacy groups for raising awareness about the importance of early detection and treatment.
By January 2025, Catherine shared that she had completed treatment and was in remission. She expressed gratitude for the support she received from the public during her recovery, describing the previous months as “incredibly tough” for the entire family.
Prince William Reflects on “The Hardest Year”
During his conversation with Eugene Levy, Prince William spoke openly about balancing his roles as a husband, father, and heir to the throne while supporting both his wife and father through their health challenges.
“I’d say 2024 was the hardest year that I’ve ever had,” he said, as reported by People. He reflected on the responsibility of protecting his children and ensuring that both Catherine and his father had the space and privacy they needed to process their diagnoses.
William explained that managing family needs alongside public duties was a delicate balancing act. “It was tricky trying to do that and keep doing the job,” he said.
The Emotional Impact: “Some Pretty Not Great Places”
Prince William shared that these events brought a harsh reality into focus for him, describing the emotional experience of having both his wife and father face cancer at the same time. He compared it to having “the rug pulled out from under your feet,” noting that even when families think they may be safe from such situations, unexpected health challenges can arise suddenly.
He acknowledged the emotional toll, stating that the experience took him “to some pretty not great places,” underscoring the vulnerability that can accompany family health crises—even for those in the public eye.
Strength and Resilience
Despite the difficulties, William praised both King Charles and Princess Catherine for their strength and resilience. He described the experience as “brutal” and “dreadful” from a personal perspective but emphasized the importance of perseverance in the face of hardship.
“Life is sent to test us, and being able to overcome that is what makes us who we are,” he reflected. His words highlighted the family’s commitment to supporting one another through challenging times, while also maintaining their public service duties.
King Charles Continues Treatment While Serving
As of October 2025, King Charles continues to receive treatment for his cancer while carrying out selected royal engagements. His ability to balance medical care with public responsibilities has drawn both domestic and international attention.
Days after the Reluctant Traveler episode aired, King Charles and Prince William made a joint public appearance at the Natural History Museum in London on October 9, 2025. The event was organized by the UK government as part of a lead-up to COP30, the United Nations Climate Change Conference scheduled to take place in Belém, Brazil, in 2025.
Both the King and the Prince of Wales have long histories of advocating for environmental conservation. Their joint appearance underscored their shared commitment to addressing climate change, even during a challenging period for the family.
Public Response to Royal Health Challenges
Both announcements — King Charles’ and Princess Catherine’s — were met with significant public support. Political leaders, celebrities, health organizations, and members of the public offered their well-wishes and encouragement through official statements and social media.
Health experts noted that both the King’s and Catherine’s openness about their diagnoses had a positive impact on public conversations around cancer awareness. According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), increased public discussion can encourage more people to seek early screenings and medical advice.
A Rare Glimpse Into Royal Family Life
Prince William’s candid interview provided the public with a rare look at how personal health challenges affect the royal family behind the scenes. His words reflected both vulnerability and resilience, offering insight into how he navigated supporting loved ones while fulfilling public expectations.
Such moments are uncommon in royal communications, which often remain formal and reserved. William’s openness may help foster greater public understanding of how health challenges affect families universally, regardless of status.
Conclusion
Prince William’s reflections on King Charles’ cancer diagnosis and Princess Catherine’s health journey provide a humanizing perspective on the monarchy during a period of significant personal and public challenges.
His candid words highlight the emotional realities of facing multiple health crises within a family, as well as the resilience required to navigate them while maintaining public responsibilities.
As King Charles continues treatment and Catherine remains in remission, the royal family’s experiences have drawn widespread empathy, reinforcing the importance of family support, medical care, and public understanding during times of illness.
