Catherine, Princess of Wales, made a polished and seasonal appearance on Tuesday as she joined senior members of the British royal family for King Charles III’s annual pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace. The gathering is a longstanding royal tradition, offering an opportunity for relatives to come together ahead of the monarch’s official Christmas engagements.
The Princess of Wales arrived alongside Prince William and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. The family was also accompanied by their longtime nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, who has worked with the Wales children for many years and is a familiar presence at public family appearances.
A Festive Look with Familiar Pieces
For the occasion, Catherine wore a red polka-dot dress by British designer Alessandra Rich. The dress is a familiar piece in her wardrobe, having first been seen in 2019 during her appearance on the BBC holiday program A Berry Royal Christmas. Its reappearance aligns with her well-documented approach to sustainable fashion, which often includes rewearing and restyling existing garments for new occasions.
She accessorized the look with a black velvet hair bow by Miu Miu, a piece she has previously worn at public commemorative events, including the VE Day celebration concert held earlier this year. Catherine also wore the Van Cleef & Arpels Magic Alhambra earrings, a design she has owned for several years and previously wore during the royal tour of the Caribbean in 2022.
Her styling reflected a balance between formality and seasonal warmth, consistent with appearances typically associated with pre-Christmas royal engagements.
Coordinated Family Arrivals
Princess Charlotte coordinated with her mother in a burgundy velvet dress, reinforcing a subtle festive theme within the family’s attire. Earlier in December, Charlotte and her brothers were seen wearing navy outfits that coordinated with Prince William during Catherine’s annual carol service at Westminster Abbey.
Prince George and Prince Louis also appeared in winter-appropriate formal attire, in keeping with the dress standards typically observed at royal family gatherings held at Buckingham Palace.
The arrival of the Wales family was photographed as they entered the palace grounds, joining other royal relatives for the private luncheon.
A Longstanding Royal Tradition
King Charles III’s annual pre-Christmas lunch is held each December and is distinct from the monarch’s official Christmas Day celebrations, which traditionally take place at Sandringham. The luncheon serves as a final family gathering before the holiday period and typically includes both working royals and extended family members.
While the event is private, arrivals are often photographed, offering the public a glimpse of the royal family ahead of Christmas. The luncheon has been a consistent fixture on the royal calendar for many years and continued under King Charles following his accession to the throne.
Other Royal Guests in Attendance
This year’s luncheon was well attended by senior and extended members of the royal family. Princess Anne arrived with her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence. The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were also present, accompanied by their daughter, Lady Louise Windsor.
Children of Princess Margaret, Lady Sarah Chatto and David Armstrong-Jones, Earl of Snowdon, attended as well. Lord Snowdon’s arrival drew attention as he was photographed arriving at Buckingham Palace by bicycle, a detail that has been noted by photographers and royal correspondents.
Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie were also seen entering the palace. Both had not attended the Princess of Wales’s carol service earlier in the month, making their presence at the luncheon notable. Their parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York, were not observed arriving at the event.
A Busy December for the Princess of Wales
The pre-Christmas lunch followed an especially full schedule for Catherine throughout December. Earlier in the month, she took part in the German State Visit, including attendance at the State Banquet held at Buckingham Palace. Shortly thereafter, she hosted her annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey, an event that has become a regular feature of the royal calendar and highlights themes of community, service, and reflection.
In addition to public engagements, the Prince and Princess of Wales also released their annual Christmas card, continuing a tradition that offers a personal glimpse into their family life while maintaining formal royal presentation.
Fashion and Continuity
Catherine’s decision to rewear previously seen garments has become a defining aspect of her public image. Fashion analysts and royal commentators have frequently noted that this approach aligns with broader conversations around sustainability and responsible consumption, while also reinforcing continuity in royal presentation.
The Alessandra Rich dress, velvet bow, and statement earrings collectively reflect a style approach that balances tradition, practicality, and understated elegance—qualities often associated with the modern role of the Princess of Wales.
A Seasonal Moment Ahead of Christmas
The annual Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace serves as a symbolic transition into the festive period for the royal family. While it is not part of the monarch’s official Christmas Day program, it provides an opportunity for relatives to gather before dispersing for the holidays.
For observers, the event also offers insight into family dynamics, generational continuity, and the evolving public roles of senior royals. Catherine’s appearance alongside her children underscores the increasing visibility of the next generation within structured royal traditions.
As the holiday season approaches, the luncheon marks one of the final collective appearances of the wider royal family before Christmas, closing out a year of public service, ceremonial duties, and family milestones.
