Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is receiving medical treatment in the Philippines following a recent health emergency, according to verified reports from reputable outlets including People, Daily Mail, and statements from family members. The 81-year-old has experienced several medical difficulties in recent years, and his family has now confirmed that he underwent surgery and is being monitored by medical professionals.
While Thomas Markle and Meghan Markle have had a well-documented estrangement since before her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, family members have expressed hope for compassion and communication during this time. A spokesperson for the Duchess has confirmed to People magazine that she has reached out privately following the news of her father’s hospitalization—a detail reported widely by U.S. and international media.
A Confirmed Medical Emergency in the Philippines
According to Thomas Markle Jr., who spoke publicly to Daily Mail, the health issue occurred at the home he shares with his father in the Philippines. He stated that his father became seriously ill and required immediate medical assistance. After an initial evaluation at a local hospital, the medical team arranged for his transfer by ambulance to a larger facility for additional tests and interventions.
Thomas Markle Jr. reported that doctors recommended urgent surgery based on their clinical assessments. In the statement he provided to the media, he emphasized that the situation was serious and asked the public to keep his father in their thoughts during his recovery. While specific medical details remain private—which is consistent with standard health-privacy considerations—the family confirmed that the ongoing treatment includes continued monitoring in a hospital setting.
People magazine also confirmed that emergency care was required and that Thomas Markle is recovering under medical supervision. The publication reported that Thomas and his son have been residing in the Philippines since earlier in 2025, a move that was mentioned by Thomas Sr. in earlier interviews in which he discussed the personal impact of his public family situation.
Background on the Public Estrangement
The complex relationship between Meghan Markle and her father has been covered extensively by global media for several years. In early 2018, ahead of Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry, Thomas became the subject of widespread coverage after participating in staged photographs with a British tabloid photographer. At the time, Kensington Palace had urged the media to respect his privacy, and the subsequent release of the staged images led to significant tension and public scrutiny.
Thomas Markle later shared that he had been dealing with health issues at the time, and he did not travel to the United Kingdom for the wedding. During the ceremony at Windsor Castle, King Charles III—then Prince of Wales—accompanied Meghan down the aisle, a decision also confirmed by royal officials at the time.
The estrangement between father and daughter continued in the years that followed. Thomas Markle has expressed sadness over the distance, noting in past interviews that he hopes for reconciliation. Meghan Markle, now living with Prince Harry and their two children in California, has spoken about the emotional impact of family challenges but has not publicly commented on private family communications.
Meghan Markle Has Reached Out, Spokesperson Confirms
Following early news reports about Thomas Markle’s hospitalization, online speculation increased about whether Meghan had made contact. A spokesperson for the Duchess confirmed to People magazine that she has reached out privately.
This verified statement is one of the few official comments from Meghan’s representatives regarding her father’s health and reflects an acknowledgment of the seriousness of the situation.
The statement did not include additional details about the nature or timing of the communication, nor did it indicate whether further contact is planned. Meghan and Prince Harry have generally maintained privacy regarding personal family matters, particularly those involving relatives who are not public figures.
Thomas Markle’s Life in the Philippines
Earlier this year, Thomas Markle discussed his decision to move to the Philippines, citing a preference for a quieter environment and a desire to avoid the constant media attention that surrounded his family in the United States. In an interview with the Mail on Sunday in early 2025, he mentioned that public conversations about Meghan and Prince Harry were emotionally difficult, as they served as reminders of their estrangement.
According to his comments published in that interview, he hoped for improved communication and expressed a wish to have contact with his grandchildren. Those remarks have since been referenced in ongoing media coverage following his hospitalization.
Family Request for Compassion
In statements made to the media, including comments to Daily Mail, Thomas Markle Jr. emphasized that his father is receiving care and that the situation remains medically serious. He expressed hope that Meghan would show compassion during her father’s recovery and stated that the family’s primary focus is on supporting the 81-year-old as he undergoes treatment.
No official statement has been made by other members of the extended family, and representatives for Prince Harry and Meghan have not provided further details beyond their confirmation of Meghan’s outreach.
A Public Story, but a Personal Moment
Thomas Markle’s health challenges have been covered widely in recent years due to his connection to the British royal family and the global public interest that surrounds Meghan and Prince Harry. Nevertheless, health-related events like this remain deeply personal, and media outlets have emphasized the importance of respecting privacy.
As the situation develops, updates have largely come from direct statements made by the family to established news organizations. At this time, no additional medical details have been released, and the family has not requested further publicity.
