Linda Thompson’s relationship with Elvis Presley was one of the most memorable in the King’s life, and the legacy of their time together continues to inspire and intrigue fans worldwide. Despite their separation years before Elvis’s untimely death in 1977, Linda remains an important figure in the history of Elvis’s personal and professional journey. Her open reflections on their time together reveal much about the man behind the myth, and what their relationship meant during his final years.
Early Years and Meeting Elvis
Linda Thompson’s early life in Memphis, Tennessee, was marked by a strong connection to Elvis Presley’s music. She grew up listening to his songs, and as a young girl, she even told her parents that she would one day marry the legendary singer. This childhood dream came true in 1972 when she met Elvis at a private screening of one of his films. By that time, Elvis was separated from his wife, Priscilla Presley, and was in the process of a divorce.
Though Linda initially thought Elvis was still married, she soon realized the situation had changed, and the two began dating shortly after their meeting. Linda, a successful beauty queen with titles like Miss Tennessee, was soon introduced to the world of rock and roll as Elvis’s companion. Their relationship would span several years, and Linda moved in with Elvis at his famous Graceland estate.
The Relationship and Its Challenges
Linda Thompson’s time with Elvis was filled with both the glamour of being associated with one of the world’s most famous figures and the deep personal struggles Elvis faced. While she admired him for his extraordinary talents and charisma, Linda also witnessed firsthand the struggles Elvis endured with his health. By the mid-1970s, Elvis’s use of prescription medications and his declining health took a toll on their relationship.
In her memoir, Linda described their relationship as one of “kindred spirits,” where they supported each other through ups and downs. However, as Elvis’s health worsened, Linda found it increasingly difficult to cope with his self-destructive behavior. She spoke about how exhausting it was to care for him as he struggled with his physical and mental health, watching him spiral while feeling helpless to stop it.
Elvis’s Declining Health and Linda’s Departure
Despite their deep connection, Linda made the difficult decision to leave Elvis in 1975. She cited his declining health, which included liver problems and dependence on prescription medication, as a significant factor in her decision. After Elvis was hospitalized for several health issues, Linda realized that she needed to focus on her own life and career.
The decision was not an easy one, and Linda later admitted that she struggled with the idea of leaving Elvis during such a difficult time. However, she knew that she could not continue to watch him deteriorate without being able to help him. In the years that followed, Linda occasionally stayed in touch with Elvis, and she remained deeply concerned about his well-being.
Elvis’s Death and Linda’s Last Words
Tragically, just two years after Linda’s departure, Elvis Presley passed away on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42. The news of his death shocked the world, and Linda was devastated by the loss of someone she had cared for deeply. In the days leading up to his death, Linda had tried to reach out to him. On the night of his passing, she called Graceland and spoke to Elvis’s best friend, Charlie Hodge. She asked Charlie to check on Elvis, as she had a “haunting feeling” that he might need help. Charlie reassured her that Elvis was fine, but Linda’s final words to him were, “Just tell him I called and I love him.”
When the news broke that Elvis had passed away, Linda was deeply affected. She was one of the first people that Elvis’s daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, called to inform her of the tragic news. Linda’s connection to Elvis had not only been a romantic one, but also one of deep friendship and emotional support during some of the most difficult times in his life.
