In a deeply personal and revealing moment, Celine Dion, the iconic Canadian singer known for her powerhouse vocals, has shared her battle with Stiff-Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare neurological disorder. In her documentary titled “I Am: Celine Dion”, which was released to the public recently, Dion opens up about the challenges she has faced in both her personal and professional life due to the condition. The documentary not only offers insight into her ongoing struggles but also shows an intimate moment in which she experiences a seizure during physical therapy.
Stiff-Person Syndrome: A Rare and Unpredictable Condition
Stiff-Person Syndrome is a rare neurological condition that causes muscle stiffness and spasms. It is characterized by uncontrollable muscle contractions and can lead to significant mobility challenges and chronic pain. SPS is often misdiagnosed due to its rarity, with symptoms resembling other conditions such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease. The exact cause of SPS is not fully understood, but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks its own cells.
In her 2022 announcement, Celine Dion shared her diagnosis with the world, revealing that she had been battling the condition for several years. Dion explained that she had been experiencing symptoms for 17 years prior to her diagnosis, although it took time for the severity of the condition to become clear.
A Professional Struggle: How SPS Affected Her Career
In the documentary, Dion reflects on how Stiff-Person Syndrome affected her performances on the road. She recalls difficulties during her 2018 and 2019 tours, particularly with her vocal performance. Dion, who is known for her impressive vocal range, admitted that she struggled to reach certain notes during her live performances due to muscle stiffness and spasms that prevented her from singing comfortably.
Dion’s struggle to maintain her career during this period also involved multiple postponements and cancellations of concert dates. Initially, the singer cited a common cold as the reason for rescheduling her shows. However, as her condition worsened, it became clear that her health challenges were more serious. Eventually, she had to cancel the remainder of her 2022 tour after publicly revealing her diagnosis.
“I couldn’t keep pretending,” Dion says in the documentary. “I felt guilty, but I also had to be honest with myself and my fans. I couldn’t go on without explaining why I was struggling.”
The Emotional Moment in Physical Therapy
The documentary includes a harrowing scene in which Dion experiences a severe spasm while undergoing a physical therapy session. As Dion lies on the therapy table, attempting to work through the physical discomfort caused by the stiffness in her body, she suddenly begins to experience a full-body spasm. Her body locks up, and she is unable to speak or move.
As the camera rolls, Dion’s medical team quickly administers benzodiazepine nasal spray, which helps alleviate the muscle spasms. Despite the intense pain, Dion remains composed, though visibly shaken. In the video, she is heard expressing her embarrassment, saying, “I feel so embarrassed. I can’t control my body.” This raw and vulnerable moment highlights the emotional and physical toll that Stiff-Person Syndrome has taken on her life.
The Impact of Dion’s Story
The release of Dion’s documentary has been met with an outpouring of support from fans and the public, as many express admiration for her bravery in sharing such a personal aspect of her life. Stiff-Person Syndrome is still a relatively unknown condition to the general public, and Dion’s openness about her experience is helping to raise awareness about the disorder.

Dion’s decision to share her struggle with the world is not only important for those living with similar conditions but also for anyone facing chronic illnesses.
