Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, remains one of the most talked-about figures of the modern British royal era. Her journey from a California-born actress to a global humanitarian and member of the British Royal Family has fascinated audiences around the world. While her marriage to Prince Harry has been widely documented, many are also curious about her earlier years and how her past experiences helped shape the woman she is today.
Early Life and Education
Rachel Meghan Markle was born on August 4, 1981, in Los Angeles, California. Her mother, Doria Ragland, worked as a yoga instructor and social worker, while her father, Thomas Markle Sr., was a television lighting director who won a Daytime Emmy Award for his work on the show General Hospital.
Growing up in Los Angeles gave Meghan early exposure to the entertainment industry, which would later play a defining role in her career.
Meghan attended Immaculate Heart High School, an all-girls Catholic school in Los Angeles, and later studied at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She graduated in 2003 with a degree in Theater and International Studies, combining her artistic ambitions with a strong interest in global affairs and community engagement.
Meghan’s Early Career in Acting and Advocacy
After university, Meghan pursued acting and quickly landed small roles in television shows such as General Hospital, CSI: Miami, and Fringe. Her breakthrough came in 2011 when she was cast as Rachel Zane in the USA Network legal drama Suits. The series became an international success, running for nine seasons and earning Meghan global recognition.
Beyond acting, Meghan became known for her advocacy work. Before joining the royal family, she worked with organizations such as World Vision, UN Women, and One Young World, promoting causes like gender equality, clean water initiatives, and girls’ education. Her 2015 speech at the United Nations Women’s Conference highlighted her passion for empowering women and addressing social inequality.
Meghan Markle’s Previous Marriage
Before her marriage to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was married to Trevor Engelson, a film producer and talent manager based in Los Angeles.
According to publicly available records, the couple began dating in the early 2000s and married in September 2011 at the Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. The marriage lasted about two years before they divorced in 2013, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
After their separation, both moved on with their respective careers. Engelson went on to produce several television and film projects, including the acclaimed series Snowfall. Meghan continued her work on Suits and expanded her humanitarian efforts through global charities.
There is no verified record of Meghan having any other formal or confirmed engagements or marriages before meeting Prince Harry.
While social media and entertainment blogs have circulated stories about her alleged past relationships, none of these have been substantiated by reputable news outlets or public records.
Meeting Prince Harry and Life as a Royal
Meghan Markle met Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, in 2016 through a mutual friend who arranged a private introduction. Their relationship quickly became serious, and they announced their engagement in November 2017. The couple married on May 19, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, in a ceremony watched by millions worldwide.
Their wedding marked a historic moment — Meghan became the first biracial member of the modern British royal family, celebrated for bringing diversity and a fresh perspective to the monarchy. After their marriage, she received the title Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.
Transition Away from Royal Duties
In January 2020, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their decision to step back from their roles as senior working royals, expressing a desire for financial independence and a more private life. The transition, often referred to in media as “Megxit,” was formalized after discussions with the late Queen Elizabeth II and other senior members of the royal household.
Following their move to the United States, the couple settled in Montecito, California, where they focus on philanthropic projects through their nonprofit foundation, Archewell. The foundation’s mission, as stated on its official website, is “to uplift and unite communities through acts of compassion and advocacy.”

Since relocating to California, Meghan has continued her public work, focusing on mental health, women’s empowerment, and social equity.
Through Archewell Productions, the couple has partnered with major media platforms like Netflix and Spotify to create documentaries, podcasts, and series exploring human stories and resilience.
In 2021, Meghan and Prince Harry participated in a widely viewed interview with Oprah Winfrey, where they discussed their experiences within the royal institution, media scrutiny, and their decision to step away from public royal life. The conversation sparked international dialogue about race, mental health, and the pressures of public life.

Meghan Markle’s public image has often been the subject of intense media scrutiny. Studies conducted by outlets such as the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism have shown that coverage of the Duchess varies widely across different countries and platforms — with American audiences generally more supportive, and British tabloids often more critical.
Despite this, Meghan continues to receive recognition for her humanitarian work. She has been featured in TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list and continues to advocate for equality, maternal health, and media accountability.
The Importance of Verifying Public Narratives
Given Meghan Markle’s global profile, misinformation and rumors about her personal life often circulate online. Reputable sources such as BBC, The Guardian, and Reuters stress the importance of distinguishing between verified facts and unsubstantiated claims.
