When veterinarians in Zimbabwe set out to look for an injured elephant, they expected a long search. Instead, the elephant calmly walked up to their truck. Here is what AWARE Trust Zimbabwe reported about the rescue of the elephant they named “Pretty Boy,” and what remains unknown.
Mana Pools: A Refuge for Wildlife
Mana Pools National Park in northern Zimbabwe is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its wildlife, including elephants, hippos, crocodiles and more than 300 bird species. Rangers, vets and conservation groups work to protect its animals, many of which are threatened.
The Call and the Elephant
AWARE Trust Zimbabwe, the country’s veterinary conservation trust, received a report of an injured elephant. Two of its vets went out to find him, expecting to spend more time searching than treating.
The elephant didn’t make them search. According to the group’s post, he made himself available for examination within half an hour, walking right up to the vehicle in a calm, relaxed way.
What the Vets Found
On closer inspection, the vets found a serious wound on the elephant’s head. An X-ray showed that a bullet was lodged in his skull area. The team believed he had been shot weeks earlier and had been living with the injury ever since.
The vets said the wound had become infected, and that X-rays showed he had been lucky, since the bullet had stopped short of causing a fatal injury.
Treatment and Recovery
The team cleaned and disinfected the wound, removed damaged material and gave him antibiotics. After the procedure, the elephant woke up and reportedly settled down for a nap beside a tree. By the next day, the group said he was feeling much better, and he was expected to be monitored within the park.
The vets also noted how gentle he was with the people treating him, despite what he had been through.
What We Don’t Know
Some parts of the story are speculation or unconfirmed:
- The vets believe he may have been shot outside the park and come inside for safety. This is their opinion, not a proven fact.
- Reports don’t say who shot him or why, so it’s unclear whether the shooting was poaching, human-wildlife conflict or something else.
- Details come from the vets’ own posts, and the reports don’t describe the elephant’s long-term condition.
- Describing the elephant as “asking for help” is a human interpretation of his behavior.
Elephants and the Threats They Face
African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are listed as endangered by the IUCN. They face threats including poaching for ivory, habitat loss and conflict with people when they raid crops or move through farmland. Conservation vets play a key role in treating injured wildlife, and field teams often work in remote areas to reach animals in need. Elephants are intelligent, social animals, and injuries like this can affect not just one animal but the herd around it.
If You Visit Mana Pools or Another Safari Park
- Book a licensed operator. Compare Zimbabwe safari tours and Mana Pools safari packages from guides who follow park rules.
- Keep a safe distance. Never approach, feed or crowd wild elephants, and follow your guide’s instructions.
- Plan for remote travel. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is worth considering for safaris.
- Bring the right gear. Browse binoculars and wildlife photography cameras with zoom lenses for watching animals respectfully.
- Choose responsible tourism. Operators that support local conservation help fund protection work.
