A long airport delay at Chicago’s O’Hare turned into a very different kind of connection when a tiny orange kitten ran up to a traveler during a cigar break. Instead of going home alone, he ended up boarding with a brand new feline passenger.
Virgil Wiebe, a Minnesota man waiting out a delay at O’Hare Airport, stepped into the small park outside Terminal 1 to smoke a cigar. That is where the kitten appeared. Wiebe said the little orange cat came running up to him so suddenly that it seemed to come from nowhere.
He had already missed one flight, and he said he figured he might miss another. First, he looked around for the kitten’s mother. He thought the cat may have been born in the bushes nearby, but he could not find any sign of her. With no mother in sight, he picked up the kitten and headed for the ticketing counter.
Getting a kitten through the airport
That is where the trip turned from strange to practical. Wiebe said the TSA agent did not know what to do because they had never seen a stray at the airport before, but they tried to help and told him he would need a kennel.
With boarding coming up, Wiebe used DoorDash to have a kennel and kitten formula delivered. United Airlines then added one more passenger to the trip home. Wiebe said the cat’s ticket cost him $150.
The kitten was estimated to be about three weeks old. Wiebe named him Macanudo O’Hare, a nod to the cigar he was smoking and the airport where they met, though he also calls him Harry.
A mystery kitten, now with a home
It is still unclear how such a young kitten ended up at the middle of the world’s busiest airport. What is clear is that the chance meeting changed the rest of the journey.
Wiebe said the kitten is a joyful little thing, and that the whole encounter felt remarkably coincidental. However Harry got there, he did not stay at O’Hare. He left with a ticket, a kennel, some formula, and a home.
Why a kitten may run straight to a person
Young cats often approach people for simple reasons: hunger, cold, fear, curiosity, or early socialization. Kittens that have been handled by humans may seek contact quickly, especially in loud or unfamiliar places where a person feels safer than open space.
Orange cats also carry a reputation for bold, social behavior, but coat color does not determine personality. A friendly kitten can be outgoing in any color. Body language matters more. A kitten that walks upright with ears neutral, tail relaxed, and eyes soft is usually asking for help or attention. Hissing, crouching, flattened ears, or rapid breathing can mean stress.
What to do if you find a kitten while traveling
Start with safety. Move the kitten away from traffic, doors, and machinery if you can do so calmly. Use a jacket, towel, or carrier rather than bare hands if the kitten seems frightened. Offer water if available, but avoid feeding large amounts right away, especially dairy, which can upset a cat’s stomach.
Then look for immediate care options. Ask staff whether there is a lost and found process for animals, and contact local animal control, a shelter, or a rescue group. If you can keep the kitten with you temporarily, separate it from other animals until a veterinarian checks for a microchip, parasites, and common infections.
How flying with a cat usually works
Most cats travel best in a small, ventilated carrier that fits under a seat. Line it with an absorbent pad or towel. A secure harness and leash can help during screening or transfers, but many cats feel safest staying inside the carrier as much as possible.
Before any trip, cats generally need a health check, and some destinations require extra paperwork. Travel is easier if the cat has a quiet place to hide inside the carrier, access to water, and time to settle after arrival. Skipping sedatives is often recommended unless a veterinarian advises otherwise, because unusual surroundings already put stress on breathing, balance, and temperature control.
