For many dog owners, taking their pets along on everyday outings is part of the joy of having a four-legged companion. But David Bahnson took that idea to an entirely different level when he decided his two Golden Retrievers deserved a place on his kayaking adventures, too.
There was just one problem: his wooden kayak had only one seat, and there were three passengers in the family.
Rather than leave his dogs behind, David came up with a clever solution that would allow all of them to enjoy the water together.
One Kayak, Two Dogs, and a Creative Idea
David and his wife had always enjoyed traveling with their dogs. Whether by car, plane, or boat, their Golden Retrievers loved being included in family activities.
When David first took his dog Susie kayaking, he discovered that she could fit inside one of the kayak’s storage compartments. However, the space was rather cramped, making it less than ideal for longer outings.
Then the family welcomed another Golden Retriever named Ginger.
With two dogs now hoping to join the adventures, David realized that his original arrangement needed an upgrade.
He needed a kayak designed not just for one human paddler, but for the entire family.
How David Turned Storage Compartments Into Dog Seats
David used a wooden Pygmy Coho kayak as the starting point for his project.
These kayaks were available as assembly kits, allowing him to modify the original construction plans to create a more suitable arrangement for his dogs.
Instead of keeping the standard storage compartment design, he adjusted the openings to create two dedicated spaces where Susie and Ginger could sit comfortably.
He also constructed special coamings around the openings.
These raised edges helped keep the dogs’ seating areas more suitable for paddling and reduced the amount of water entering the kayak.
The compartments were designed around the dogs’ bodies rather than human legroom. Although a person wouldn’t have enough space to comfortably place their feet inside, the arrangement worked well for the two Golden Retrievers.
It was a clever example of adapting an existing design to meet the needs of an unusual crew.
Two Golden Retrievers Who Know Their Places
Of course, modifying the kayak was only part of the challenge. David also needed his dogs to behave safely while getting in and out of the boat.
Fortunately, Susie and Ginger were described as very well behaved.
According to David, they learned to wait for instructions before entering or leaving the kayak. This made it easier to prepare for each outing and keep everyone organized.
With both dogs settled into their individual spaces and David at the paddle, the family could finally enjoy the water together.
And they didn’t just stay close to shore. The family had already paddled miles together, turning an unusual DIY project into a regular way to share adventures.
A Special Way to Include the Whole Family
What makes David’s project so heartwarming isn’t simply the clever kayak modification. It’s the thought behind it.
Instead of accepting that his dogs couldn’t join him, he found a way to include them in something he loved.
For many pet owners, dogs are more than animals living in the same household. They’re companions who become part of everyday routines, holidays, and family memories.
David’s customized kayak reflects that feeling in a particularly creative way.
His two Golden Retrievers now have their own places on board, and the family can explore the water without leaving anyone behind.
A Reminder That Adventures Are Better Together
Not every dog enjoys being on the water, and any kayaking trip with pets requires careful preparation. Dogs should be comfortable around water, wear properly fitted canine life jackets, and be introduced to the kayak gradually. Owners also need to consider weather, currents, and the boat’s stability.
But for Susie, Ginger, and David, the idea turned into a wonderful shared experience.
A simple storage compartment became a special seat, an ordinary kayak became a family adventure boat, and two happy Golden Retrievers got to enjoy something their owner loved.
Sometimes, the best adventures begin with a simple question: Why should the dogs have to stay home?
David found his answer—and created a kayak that made room for everyone.
