A Texas dog named Chase became the center of a widely publicized animal welfare case after surveillance footage led police to ask the public for help identifying a man seen mistreating him.
Months later, the case reached an important turning point.
Thomas Joshua Reynolds, 24, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals and one misdemeanor cruelty count. He was subsequently sentenced to prison and county jail as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.
For Chase, however, the most important part of the story happened away from the courtroom.
After being placed in the custody of the Lacy Lakeview Police Department, the dog eventually found a permanent home with one of the officers who had been involved in his case.
His journey from a difficult situation to a loving home offers a reminder of how quickly an animal’s circumstances can change when people step forward to help.
A Surveillance Video Brings Attention to Chase’s Case
The case began after the Lacy Lakeview Police Department shared surveillance footage showing a man mistreating a dog at a local business.
The footage was recorded in September 2025 and later circulated widely on social media.
Police asked members of the public to help identify the person shown in the video.
The appeal quickly attracted attention.
Cases involving companion animals can generate strong reactions, particularly when members of the public see an animal appearing to be in distress.
For law enforcement, however, identifying the person involved was only the beginning.
An investigation would need to establish what happened and determine whether criminal charges were appropriate.
Reynolds Pleads Guilty
According to the information reported by KWTX and court records, Reynolds ultimately pleaded guilty to three charges.
These included two counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
He received a sentence of five years in prison on the two felony counts.
He was also sentenced to 365 days in county jail for the misdemeanor cruelty count.
Judge Thomas West of the 19th State District Court formally pronounced the sentence.
The sentence followed a plea agreement between Reynolds and the McLennan County District Attorney’s Office.
Because Reynolds entered guilty pleas, the case moved through the court system without requiring a trial on the charges to determine his guilt.
The Weapons Charge Was Connected to an Earlier Conviction
The animal welfare case was not the only legal matter involved.
Court records indicate that the firearm charge was connected to Reynolds’ previous criminal record.
According to the report, his earlier conviction involved possession of heroin in 2023.
Under the circumstances described in the case, Reynolds was prohibited from possessing a firearm.
That charge was therefore included alongside the animal cruelty allegations in the criminal proceedings.
The combination of the charges ultimately resulted in the sentence announced by the court.
What the Indictment Alleged
The indictment described several actions involving Chase and alleged that Reynolds intentionally and knowingly mistreated the dog.
The allegations included pulling on Chase’s leash, lifting the dog from the ground, striking him, and placing him back onto the ground.
The indictment also alleged that Reynolds lifted Chase by the neck.
These details formed part of the criminal case against Reynolds.
The indictment further alleged that Chase did not receive adequate care, including necessary veterinary attention.
Rather than reproducing the most disturbing details, the broader significance of the allegations is clear: authorities believed Chase had been subjected to treatment that warranted criminal charges under Texas law.
Reynolds later pleaded guilty to the animal cruelty charges.
Chase Receives a New Chance
While the legal proceedings focused on Reynolds, another important development was taking place in Chase’s life.
The Lacy Lakeview Police Department was awarded custody of the dog following a hearing at the McLennan County Courthouse on September 18, 2025.
That decision gave Chase an opportunity to move forward.
Instead of returning to the circumstances in which he had been found, he could now receive appropriate care and live in a safer environment.
For an animal that had experienced such a difficult period, having a stable home could make an enormous difference.
A Police Officer Decides to Adopt Chase
Chase’s story eventually took an even more positive turn.
Lacy Lakeview police officer Nathan Rodriguez adopted him.
What had started as a police investigation had resulted in a permanent home for the dog.
Rather than remaining in temporary care indefinitely, Chase now had someone willing to make him part of the family.
Adoption can be a major transition for a rescued animal.
A new home provides more than food and shelter. It can offer routine, companionship, patience, and the opportunity to become comfortable in a completely different environment.
For Chase, that new chapter began with someone who was already familiar with his story.
Why Responsible Intervention Matters
Chase’s case also illustrates the important role that ordinary members of the public can play when animal welfare concerns arise.
The surveillance footage provided evidence that allowed investigators to begin identifying what had happened.
Police then asked the community for assistance.
That public appeal helped bring attention to the case and contributed to the investigation that followed.
People who witness suspected animal mistreatment should avoid putting themselves in danger or attempting to confront someone directly.
Instead, depending on the circumstances, they can contact local animal-control authorities, law enforcement, or an appropriate animal welfare organization.
Providing accurate information can help trained professionals determine what action is necessary.
The Importance of Veterinary Care for Rescued Animals
The indictment also mentioned concerns about Chase’s access to veterinary care.
When an animal has been through a difficult situation, professional evaluation can be an important part of the recovery process.
A veterinarian can assess the animal’s overall condition and determine whether additional treatment, monitoring, nutrition, or rehabilitation is needed.
Rescue organizations and law enforcement agencies often work together with veterinary professionals when animals are removed from concerning environments.
The goal is to address immediate needs while also giving the animal the best possible opportunity to return to a comfortable routine.
Chase’s eventual adoption suggests that his story continued well beyond the initial investigation.
From a Viral Video to a Forever Home
It is easy to focus on the video that first brought Chase’s situation to public attention.
But the most encouraging part of his story is what happened afterward.
The footage led to an investigation.
The investigation resulted in criminal charges.
The court proceedings eventually led to a sentence.
And throughout that process, Chase was given a new opportunity.
He was placed in the custody of the Lacy Lakeview Police Department and later adopted by Officer Nathan Rodriguez.
That progression shows how an animal welfare case can involve many different people and institutions.
Police officers investigate.
Prosecutors handle criminal charges.
Courts determine legal outcomes.
Veterinary professionals provide medical care.
And members of the public can help by reporting concerns.
Each role can contribute to protecting animals and helping them move toward safer circumstances.
A New Chapter for Chase
For Chase, the legal outcome was only one part of a much larger story.
The dog now has a permanent home with someone who chose to welcome him into his family.
His future is no longer defined by a surveillance video or a criminal case.
Instead, he has the opportunity to experience the ordinary routines that make a house feel like home.
A comfortable place to rest.
Regular meals.
Daily companionship.
Time outdoors.
And people who care about his wellbeing.
Those simple things can be especially meaningful for a rescued animal.
What This Case Reminds Us
Animal welfare cases can be difficult to read about, but they can also highlight the importance of speaking up when something seems wrong.
Chase’s story demonstrates that intervention can lead to meaningful change.
A member of the public may notice something concerning.
Police may investigate.
Animal welfare professionals may provide assistance.
A court may address the alleged conduct.
And, perhaps most importantly, an animal may eventually find a safe and loving home.
The process can take time, but every step matters.
A Hopeful Ending for Chase
Thomas Joshua Reynolds’ guilty pleas and subsequent sentence brought the criminal proceedings to an important stage.
But for Chase, the happier outcome came through a different kind of resolution.
He was given a second chance.
The Lacy Lakeview Police Department secured custody of him, and Officer Nathan Rodriguez eventually opened his home to the dog.
That means Chase’s story is no longer simply about the circumstances that first brought him to public attention.
It is about what came next.
A difficult chapter was followed by care, stability, and a forever home.
And perhaps that is the part of Chase’s journey worth remembering most.
An animal’s past can be difficult, but with the right people willing to step forward, the future can look very different.
For Chase, that future is now filled with the possibility of something every companion animal deserves: a safe home, dependable care, and people who will treat him with patience and kindness.
