In the winter of 1,92, two children were found alone in a stone farmhouse 40 mi outside Edinburgh. They were 7 years old, identical boys. Their parents had been dead for at least 6 weeks by the time anyone thought to check on the family. And when the local constable finally forced the door open, he did not find what he expected to find.
He expected to find two starved corpses. He expected to find frozen bodies. What he found instead was two perfectly healthy little boys sitting at the kitchen table, quietly eating from a bowl of something warm. They had been alone for almost 2 months in the middle of a Scottish winter, and they were not thin, they were not sick, they were calm.
They looked up at him when he came in, and one of them said very politely, “You are late.” The boys were taken to the Craig Lockheart Hospital for sick children in Edinburgh, where they were placed in a private ward for observation. The doctors could find nothing wrong with them physically. But within 3 days of arriving, something began to happen inside that ward that the staff could not explain.
The boys were drawing on every wall, every surface with pencils, with chalk, with charcoal from the fire grate, with anything they could get their small hands on. And what they were drawing was the same image over and over again in perfect detail from perfect memory. It was a city, a city that did not exist. A city with buildings that no seven-year-old boy in rural Scotland could have ever seen, ever heard of, ever imagined.
And when a visiting professor from the University of Edinburgh finally examined the drawings and compared them to old maps, old photographs, old records nobody had touched in 50 years. He sat down in the middle of the ward, put his hands over his face, and said one sentence to the nurse standing beside him. He said, “These children remember.
This is the story of the Fenwick twins. This is what they drew. And this is what the drawings say about a world that we have been told over and over and over again was never here.” Before we go any further, I want you to do one thing. In the comments below, tell me the name of the town or the city that you grew up in.
Just the name, nothing else. Because by the end of this video, I promise you, you will look at the buildings in that town differently. You will look at the streets differently. You will look at the courthouse, the library, the old post office, the church on the corner that has been there longer than anyone can remember.
And you will start to ask the same question the professor asked in that ward in 1902. Drop your hometown in the comments. Let’s build the map together. To understand what happened in that ward, you have to understand what happened in the farmhouse first. And to understand the farmhouse, you have to understand where it was and what was around it and why nobody came to check on the family for 6 weeks in the middle of winter.
The Fenwick property sat in a shallow valley in the Pentland Hills south of Edinburgh in a region that on modern maps is largely empty. farmland, sheep pasture, a few dry stone walls that have been there for so long that nobody knows who built them. But in 1902, the valley was not empty. There were three other farms within walking distance.
There was a small crossroads with a blacksmith and a chapel. There was a road that ran east toward the coast and west toward Lannarch. It was not a busy place, but it was not forgotten. People passed through. People stopped for water. People noticed each other. The father Alexander Fenwick was a wool merchant, not a farmer. He owned the property, but he did not work the land himself.
He was in his mid-40s, and by every account left in the parish records, he was a quiet, deliberate, careful man. His wife Margaret was younger, in her early 30s, originally from the north, from somewhere in the Kangorms, and she was known in the parish for two things. She was known for singing in the chapel choir on Sundays, and she was known for keeping to herself the rest of the week.
The twins were born in the summer of 1,895. Their names were Thomas and Edward, and from the moment they could talk, the parish record notes something unusual about them. They finished each other’s sentences, not in the ordinary way that twins sometimes do. They finished them in the middle of the word. One boy would begin a sentence and stop mid syllable and the other boy would pick up from that syllable and complete the thought as if it had been his own from the beginning.
The chapel minister, a man named Reverend Callum McBride, wrote about this in a private letter to a colleague in Glasgow in 1899. He said, and I quote, “The Fenwick children do not speak to each other. They speak as one voice split in two. It is disconcerting to sit near them at supper.” Reverend McBride would later be the one who noticed that the family had stopped attending chapel and he would be the one who eventually sent the constable to check on them.
There is one more detail about Margaret Fenwick that the parish records preserve and that becomes important later. Margaret Fenwick, according to a note made by the parish cler in 1898, kept a garden behind the farmhouse that produced vegetables and herbs out of season. In the middle of winter, when every other garden in the valley was dead and frozen, Margaret Fenwick’s garden was producing onions, cabbages, a kind of small potato that nobody in the valley recognized.
When she was asked how she managed this, she said that the soil in that particular patch was warm. That is the word she used, warm. She said it had always been warm. She said her grandmother, who had lived on a farm nearby before she was born, had told her that certain patches of ground in the valley had always been warm, even in the deepest cold, and that if you planted things in those patches, they would grow, no matter what the sky was doing above them.
The parish cler who wrote this down added his own note at the bottom of the entry. He wrote, “I have visited the garden. It is as she describes, but he did not send the constable in October when the family first stopped attending. He did not send the constable in November when the smoke from the farmhouse chimney was noticed to be sporadic.
He did not send the constable in early December when a neighbor mentioned that no lamp had been seen in the Fenwick windows for many nights. He sent the constable on the 28th of December, almost 2 months after anyone had last seen Alexander or Margaret Fenwick alive. Why did he wait so long? This is the first question that historians ask about the Fenwick case.
And the answer that Reverend McBride gave decades later in a memoir that was never formally published is one of the strangest details in the entire record. He said that he had been receiving letters, letters written in a child’s handwriting, letters that said the family was well, letters that thanked him for his concern and asked him not to worry.
Letters that were postmarked from a village that did not exist. The village on the postmark was called Kirkol. There is no Kirkholm in Scotland. There has never been a Kirkholm in Scotland. But the letters bore an official postmark from an official post office from a village whose name appears on no map in no register in no census at any point in the recorded history of the country.
Reverend McBride kept the letters in a wooden box until his death in 1934. The box was donated to the Edinburgh Historical Society. The letters are still there. You can see them if you know how to ask. The handwriting on all of them is identical and every one of them ends with the same phrase, two words, come slowly.
The constable’s name was James Dockerty. He was a young man, 26 years old, and he had been the parish constable for less than a year. He had never dealt with a death in the family. He had never dealt with a missing person. When Reverend McBride finally asked him to go up to the Fenwick farm on the morning of the 28th of December, Dockerty took a horse, a lantern, and one other thing.
He took his older brother. His older brother’s name was William Dockati. William was a stonemason. He was not officially involved in the parish. He came along because James asked him to. And when they arrived at the farmhouse, the two brothers stood outside the door for almost 20 minutes before either of them touched it.
James wrote about this later in the official parish report in language that is unusually direct for a police document of the period. He wrote, “The house was quiet in a manner that was not natural. There were no birds. There were no rats. The chimney was cold, but the door was warm. The door was warm. In the middle of a Scottish winter, in a house that had been closed and unheated for weeks, the front door was warm to the touch.
The two brothers stood there staring at each other. And after a long time, William Dockati picked up a stone from the wall and knocked three times on the wooden door. The door was opened from the inside. It was opened by one of the twins. He was clean. He was wellfed. He was wearing a night shirt that appeared to be freshly laundered.
He looked up at the two men and he said, “You are late.” And then he stepped aside and let them in. Inside the farmhouse, the fire in the kitchen was burning. There was fresh bread on the table. There was a pot of stew, still warm, on the iron stove. There were two clean bowls set out for the boys, and a third bowl set out for a guest, as if the boys had known that someone was coming.
But nowhere in the house, in any room, on any floor, in the cellar, in the attic, in the outbuildings, was there any sign of Alexander or Margaret Fenwick. Not a body, not a note, not a personal item that seemed to have been left behind in a hurry. Their clothes were folded neatly in their bedroom drawers. Their shoes were arranged by the door.
Their bed was made, and on the wall above the kitchen fireplace, someone had drawn in charcoal a single small building, a tower, perfectly to scale, perfectly proportioned, rendered with the kind of architectural precision that no 7-year-old should have been capable of. James Dockerty asked the boy who opened the door what the drawing was, and the boy said, “That is the one you came from.
” Before they left, James Dockerty made a careful inventory of the farmhouse, and several of the entries in that inventory are strange enough that they need to be discussed. On the mantlepiece, a small brass clock was still running. It had been wound recently. In a house empty of adults for weeks, someone had been winding the clock.
In the pantry there were fresh supplies, a loaf of bread baked within the last day, a pat of butter that was still soft, a jug of milk that had not soured, and in the master bedroom on the bedside table there was an open book, a small leatherbound volume with no title. Its pages were covered in handwriting that James Docky did not recognize.
Not English, not Latin, not Gaelic. long lines of curling script that seemed to him to belong to no language he had ever seen. He put the book back down and wrote in his inventory a book of foreign writing on the bedside table. Not disturbed. That book was one of the items that went missing from the farmhouse between the day the boys were taken away and the day 2 months later when a team of investigators from Edinburgh came out to conduct a formal search of the property.
When the investigators arrived, the book was gone. The clock was gone. The bread and the butter and the milk were gone. Someone had come back quietly in the interval and had removed the things that were most difficult to explain. The boys were taken to Edinburgh that afternoon. They did not resist. They did not ask about their parents.
They packed a small bag each of their own belongings, and they walked out to the horse and cart of their own accord. William Dockati later said that the strangest moment of the entire day was not any of the things that were said or any of the things that were found. It was that when the boys walked out of the farmhouse, both of them at the same moment turned around and waved at the empty doorway.
Not at the door, at the doorway. As if they were saying goodbye to someone standing inside. Before we move on to the ward, stop for a second. What you just heard about the Kirk Holm letters and the warm door is the part that changes everything. But it only makes sense when you see it written out next to the original parish document, the postmark image, the handwriting samples.
It’s all in the document link below. Take 5 seconds right now, grab it, and then come back because what comes next builds directly on it. The link is in the description. QR code is on your screen. Craig Lockheart Hospital for Sick Children was a relatively new institution in 1902. It had been built in the 1880s on the western edge of Edinburgh on land that had previously belonged to the Craig Lockheart Estate.
It was a three-story stone building with high ceilings, tall windows, and long corridors that had been designed with fresh air and natural light in the mind. The private ward where the Fenwick twins were placed was on the second floor. It had two beds, a wash stand, a small writing desk, and four walls of pale cream colored plaster.
Those walls are the walls that we are going to be talking about for the rest of this story. The head physician on the case was Dr. Ronald Bell. He was a Scotsman trained in Vienna in his 50s, well respected in medical circles, and by every account, a rational, methodical, evidence-driven man. He was not a mystic. He was not a spiritualist.
He did not believe in ghosts [snorts] or in premonitions or in any of the things that people at the time were becoming very fond of believing in. And when the twins were brought into his care, he treated them exactly as he would have treated any two orphan children in shock. He fed them. He examined them. He allowed them to rest.
For the first two days, the boys said very little. They ate what was put in front of them. They slept in the same bed, curled together, even though there were two beds available, and they did not ask about their parents, not once. Doctor Belell noted this in his case book. He wrote, “The twins appear to have accepted the absence of their mother and father as a settled fact. They do not grieve.
They do not inquire. They wait.” On the third morning, one of the nurses came into the ward at dawn and found the boys standing at the wall opposite the window. They were both holding pencils, small drawing pencils that had been left on the writing desk for their use, and the wall in front of them was covered from floor to ceiling in drawings.
The nurse’s name was Elizabeth Monroe. She was 22 years old. She had been a nurse for less than 3 years. And in her private journal, which was later published as part of a memoir by her daughter in the 1970s, she describes what she saw that morning in these words, “The wall was a map. Not a map of any country I’d ever seen, but a map of a place, a city, and it was drawn in such fine detail, with such delicate lines, and so much of it that I could not understand how the two boys had produced it in a single night.
There were streets. There were buildings. There were rivers. There were bridges. There were symbols on some of the buildings that I did not recognize in a script that was not English and not Latin and not Greek. And in the center of the map there was a great round tower with a domed top. And the tower was drawn larger than everything else.
and it was drawn from three different angles, as if the boys wanted to make absolutely certain that whoever looked at the wall would understand what the tower looked like from every side. Elizabeth Monroe called for Dr. Bell. Dr. Bell arrived within the hour. And when he stood in front of that wall, he did something that his medical training had never prepared him to do.
He asked the boys to explain the drawing. And Thomas Fenwick, or possibly Edward, because nobody could ever tell them apart, looked up at Dr. Belle and said in a perfectly ordinary voice, “This is home. We are drawing it so we do not forget it.” Doctor Belle asked where home was. And the boy said, “It was here. It is still here. It is under.
You have to go slowly.” Dr. Bell wrote in his case book that afternoon that he did not know what to make of the answer. He wrote that the boys, in every other respect, behaved like ordinary, healthy children. They ate normally. They slept normally. They responded to normal questions with normal answers.
They knew their names. They knew their ages. They knew the name of their parents and their parish and the year and the name of the current king. It was only on the specific subject of the drawings that they became strange. And even then they did not seem to think they were being strange. They spoke about the city on the wall the way a normal child might speak about a house they had lived in the year before.
casually, familiarly with the assumption that everyone in the room understood what they were describing. Over the next several days, other members of the hospital staff came to look at the wall, a junior physician named Dr. Aninsley, two more nurses, the hospital’s head matron, a formidable woman named Mrs.
Iona Blackwood, who had been running the ward system at Craig Lockheart for more than 20 years. Mrs. Blackwood, according to Nurse Monroe’s journal, stood in front of the North Wall for a long time without speaking. And then she said, and Nurse Monroe recorded this exactly, I have seen this before. Nurse Monroe asked her what she meant. Mrs.
Blackwood said that when she had been a young girl growing up in a village in the Highlands, her grandfather had shown her a piece of embroidery that had been in their family for many generations. The embroidery, she said, showed a city, a city with a great round tower at its center. Her grandfather had told her that the embroidery had been made by his great great grandmother from a description that had been passed down through the women of their family.
He had told her that the city in the embroidery was a real place and that it had been in Scotland and that it had been lost. Mrs. Blackwood said that she had not thought about the embroidery in 50 years. She said she had assumed it was a family story, a family legend, the kind of thing that old people told children to make the world seem more interesting than it was.
She said she was going to write to her sister and ask if the embroidery still existed. Bam. The embroidery, according to the follow-up letter that Mrs. Blackwood wrote to Dr. Bell 3 weeks later, did still exist. It was in the possession of her sister who lived in Invenesse. Mrs. Blackwood arranged for a photograph to be taken of it and the photograph to be sent to Craig Lockheart.
The photograph arrived in the second week of February 1,93. Doctor Bell taped the photograph into the back of his case book. It is still there. The photograph shows an embroidered scene worked in dark thread on pale linen of a walled city with a great round tower rising from its center. The tower is round. The tower has a domed top.
The tower has a spiraling pattern of windows ascending from base to peak. And around the crown of the tower, just beneath the dome, there is a ring of larger openings like a circle of arches. It is the same tower. It is unmistakably the same tower. Embroidered by a woman in the Highlands of Scotland at least 150 years before the Fenwick twins were born, from a description passed down through the women of a family who had never left the Highlands.
in a valley that was more than 200 m from the valley where the Fenwick farmhouse stood. Mrs. Blackwood’s sister still owns the embroidery. It has never been publicly displayed. It has never been photographed for any publication. The only surviving image of it is the photograph taped into the back of Doctor Bell’s case book in the medical archive of the University of Edinburgh where it sits uncataloged on a shelf that most researchers pass without noticing.
Over the next 11 days, the boys drew on every available surface of that ward. They drew on all four walls. They drew on the ceiling, standing on the beds to reach it. They drew on the writing desk. They drew on the floor. They drew on the inside of the wardrobe doors. They drew on the pages of any book that was left in the room.
The staff tried to stop them. At first, they confiscated the pencils, but the boys simply used charcoal from the fire grate. They confiscated the charcoal. The boys used soot mixed with water. They confiscated everything. The boys drew with their fingernails, scratching the plaster. And the drawings were always the same city, always from different angles, always with new details filled in.
It was as if the two of them were working from a single memory, a single shared memory, and they were downloading it room by room, street by street, building by building onto every surface they could reach before that memory faded. Dr. Bell did what any responsible physician of the era would have done. He called in specialists.
He called in a professor of psychology from the University of Edinburgh. He called in a linguist to look at the symbols. He called in an art historian to look at the architecture and most importantly for our purposes he called in a man named Professor Euan Fraser from the department of archaeology at the University of Edinburgh.
Professor Fraser was an expert in the ancient buildings of Scotland. He had spent 30 years cataloging every stone circle, every burial mound, every abandoned foundation, every strange piece of masonry in the country. If anyone in Scotland could tell Dr. Bell whether the city on the wall was a real place, it was Professor Euan Fraser.
Professor Fraser arrived at Craig Lockheart on the 7th of January, 1,93. He walked into the ward. He stood in front of the north wall, which was the wall with the largest and most detailed drawing. He stood there for several minutes without saying anything, and then he sat down on the floor of the ward, not on a chair, on the floor.
He sat down cross-legged like a child in his suit and his overcoat, and he covered his face with his hands. And this is the moment that nurse Monroe recorded word for word in her journal. She wrote, “Professor Fraser sat on the floor for what seemed like a very long time. When he finally spoke, he did not speak to me and he did not speak to Dr.
Bell.” And he did not speak to the boys. He spoke to himself. He said, “These children remember. They remember what is under. God have mercy on us all. These children remember.” What Professor Fraser had recognized on that wall, according to notes he made in his own private research diary, was the layout of a city that appeared on exactly one document in the archives of the University of Edinburgh.
A document that was not at the time part of any public catalog. A document that had been donated to the university in the 1840s by a private collector and that had been filed away in a locked cabinet in the basement of the old library and that only three people at the university were even aware existed. The document was a map. The map was handdrawn.
The map was labeled in a script that had never been formally translated. And the map showed a city with a great round tower at its center with streets running in a specific radial pattern with symbols marking specific buildings that matched the drawings on the walls of that ward down to the smallest detail.
The map was dated. There was a date written on the bottom corner in Roman numerals. The date was according to the standard calendar the year 712. And the location on the map based on the coastlines and the river systems that Professor Fraser was able to reconstruct was Scotland. It was Scotland as it had existed or as someone had believed it existed more than a thousand years before the Fenwick twins were born.
And it was showing a city, a substantial city with a population that Professor Fraser estimated in the tens of thousands in a location where according to every history book and every archaeological record, there had never been anything but hills and [snorts] heather. The symbols on the walls of the ward became over the next several weeks the single greatest obsession of Professor Euan Fraser’s life.
He photographed them. He copied them into notebooks. He compared them to every ancient alphabet he could find. And he found, or thought he found, correspondences with three different scripts that were, according to conventional history, entirely unrelated to each other and entirely unrelated to Scotland.
The first script was a form of early Om, the tree alphabet used in ancient Ireland and parts of Western Scotland. But the symbols on the walls were not quite Ogum. They had extra strokes. They had additional loops. They were, in Professor Fraser’s words, Ogum, as it might have been before it was Om. Ogum at an earlier stage of its development, which was strange because the symbols on the walls were, according to their date, 1300 years old at the very least, and Ogum itself was not thought to have existed in that form at that time. The second script was a form
of runic writing that resembled certain characters found on stones in northern Norway and in Iceland. But again, the symbols on the walls were not quite runic. They were, Professor Fraser wrote, runic in the same way that a childhood photograph is the same person as an adult, recognizable, related, but earlier.
And the third script was the one that Professor Fraser could not identify at all. It was a set of geometric symbols, circles, triangles, spirals, combinations of these arranged in what appeared to be a phonetic pattern, but a phonetic pattern for a language that Professor Fraser did not know. He filled entire notebooks with attempts to decode them.
He never succeeded. And in his final notes on the subject written in 1927, 24 years after the Fenwick case, Professor Fraser wrote a single sentence that has become famous among the small circle of researchers who know about this story. He wrote, “The third script is not a language. It is a set of instructions.
” Instructions for what? Professor Fraser never explained. He died in 1929 of what the death certificate calls natural causes in his home in the new town of Edinburgh. His research papers were donated to the university archive. Most of them are still there, but the notebooks that specifically deal with the third script, the geometric symbols, the instructions are, according to the current archavist, missing.
They were cataloged in 1930. They were seen by a researcher in 1954. And at some point between 1,954 and the present day, they left the archive, and nobody knows where they went. Let us return to the drawings themselves. Let us return to the tower because the tower is the key to the entire Fenwick case.
The tower is what appears on every wall, on every ceiling, on every scrap of paper the boys touched. The tower is what the map in the university archive shows at the center of the city. The tower is what the boy drew in charcoal above the kitchen fireplace in the farmhouse, and it is what he told James Dockerty was the one you came from.
The tower in the drawings is a specific shape. It is round. It is tall. Professor Fraser estimated based on the proportions in the drawings and comparing them to the scale of the surrounding buildings that the tower would have been between 60 and 80 m tall. It has a domed top. It has windows arranged in a spiraling pattern that ascends from the base to the peak.
And at the very top, just below the dome, there is a ring of larger openings like a crown of arches that appear in every single drawing without exception. Now, here is the part that I need you to understand very carefully. The tower in the drawings is not a tower that has ever existed in Scotland.
There is no ruin like it. There is no foundation like it. There is no record in any archaeological survey of the country from the earliest surveys of the 18th century to the most recent laser scanning surveys of the 21st of any structure matching this description. If it ever existed, it does not exist now. There is not a stone of it left except except that in the year 1998, a farmer in the Pentland Hills in the same shallow valley where the Fenwick farmhouse once stood was plowing a new field. It was a field that had been used
as sheep pasture for as long as anyone in the parish could remember. And his plow struck stone. It struck stone in a place where, according to every geological map, there was no stone. He got off the tractor. He dug around the spot with his hands. And what he uncovered was not a random boulder. It was a curved surface, a curved surface of dressed stone, cut and shaped and fitted, running in an arc that suggested, if you extended it, a circle.
A circle with a diameter of somewhere between 15 and 20 m, which is if you consult the drawings in the university archive. And if you look at the estimated proportions of the tower in the drawings, almost exactly the diameter that the base of the tower would have been. The farmer reported his find to the local council.
The local council sent a surveyor. The surveyor confirmed that there was indeed a circular arrangement of work stone beneath the field. And then according to the records that are available, the case was passed to a national heritage body for further assessment and then nothing happened. The field was reeried. The farmer was compensated.
He was asked politely not to discuss the find with the press. And to the best of anyone’s knowledge, no formal excavation of the site has ever been conducted. No report has ever been published. And the stones remain where they were found, under the soil, in the valley where two little boys once sat calmly at a kitchen table, waiting for the world to catch up to them. But there is more.
The surveyor who confirmed the find in 1998 made a private set of notes about what he had seen. Those notes were not part of the official report. He kept them for himself. He was an older man near the end of his career, and he was apparently uneasy about what he had found. In 2007, before he retired, he shared his notes with a younger colleague.
That younger colleague in 2019 shared them with an independent researcher who has been following the Fenwick case for many years. And through that chain, the notes have become quietly known. What the surveyor wrote is this. The stones of the circle were not laid by any technique that he recognized. They were fitted together without mortar, but they were fitted so precisely that a piece of paper could not be slid between them.
The stones themselves were of a type of granite that does not occur naturally in the Pentland Hills. The nearest source of that particular granite, according to the geological maps he consulted, was more than 150 mi to the north, and the stones had been shaped, apparently before being placed.
They had been cut to specific angles. They had been polished on their exposed surfaces. And on the inside face of one of the stones, hidden from view unless you were standing inside the circle, there was a symbol, a carved symbol. The surveyor made a rough sketch of the symbol in his notes. The symbol, according to those who have seen it, is one of the same symbols that appeared on the walls of the ward.
It is one of the geometric symbols that Professor Fraser called not a language, but a set of instructions. The surveyor’s notes end with a single line. He wrote, “I told the council that the circle should be preserved and studied. They agreed. Then they told me the site had been reclassified. I do not know by whom. I never received a reason.
The site is on no map that I can find. It is not on the National Heritage Register. It is not on the archaeological priority list. It is, so far as any official record indicates, a normal sheep pasture. It is not. For most of their time in the ward, the boys did not speak much. They drew. When they spoke, they spoke in short, deliberate sentences, and only when directly asked a question.
But there were three occasions, according to the records kept by Dr. Bell and Nurse Monroe when the boys spoke at length. And on all three of those occasions, they spoke about the same thing. They spoke about a place that had been here in Scotland in the valley where they had been found and that had been, in their words, taken down.
The first occasion was on the morning of the 7th of January, the same day that Professor Fraser arrived. Before Fraser arrived, one of the boys woke up early, sat up in bed, and said to Nurse Monroe, who was on the night shift, “The city is still under. It is not gone. It is only quiet.” Nurse Monroe asked him what he meant. He said, “The stones are still there.
The stones, remember, when you walk on the ground, you are walking on the roofs.” The second occasion was on the 10th of January, 3 days after Professor Fraser’s first visit. Dr. Bell had asked both boys together to describe how the city had come to be under the ground. And the boys, speaking in that strange alternating way of theirs, where one would begin a sentence and the other would finish it, described what they called the coming down.
They said that a great cloud had come over the city, not a cloud of weather, but a cloud of something else, and that the cloud had been heavy, and that everything the cloud touched had been buried. Buried in a substance that they described as being like mud, but not mud. like earth but not earth, like something that had fallen from the sky and hardened into ground.
They said that the cloud had come suddenly, and that the people of the city had not had time to leave, and that most of them were still under, and that if you dug in the right places, you would find them still sitting in their houses, still standing at their windows, still holding whatever they had been holding when the sky came down. Dr.
The bell asked when this had happened and the boys in unison said before this world was named. The third occasion was on the 14th of January. It was the last time the boys spoke about the city at length and it was the strangest conversation of the three because on this occasion the boys were not describing history.
They were as far as doctor Bell and nurse Monroe understood them describing something that was still happening or that was going to happen or that had always been happening. They said that the city was not gone and that the tower was not gone and that the people were not gone. They said that the city was still there and that it could be found and that if you knew how to look, you could see it.
They said that in certain buildings, in certain streets, in certain corners of certain towns, you could still see pieces of the old city that had never been fully buried. Buildings that were older than the towns around them, foundations that did not match the walls above them, doors that were the wrong size, windows that were the wrong shape, streets that ran in patterns that did not match the plan of the town.
One of the boys said, and this is quoted verbatim in Nurse Monroe’s journal, “You have built new houses on top of the old ones, but the old ones are underneath. And sometimes when you build, you use the old stones without knowing what they were. And so the old city is still in your new city. Piece by piece, room by room. If you know how to look, you can see it.
You can walk through it. You can find the doors.” The doors. The boys used the word doors more than any other word in that final conversation. They said that there were doors in certain places that led from the new world back into the old world. They said that the doors were not always in buildings.
Sometimes they were in fields. Sometimes they were in hillsides. Sometimes they were underwater. And they said that people passed through the doors more often than anyone realized. They said that most people who passed through did not know they had done it. They said that some people came back and they said that some people did not. Dr.
Bell asked the boys where the door was in the valley where they had been found and both boys looked at him at exactly the same moment and said, “It is in the kitchen under the table.” Dr. Bell did not write down what he thought about that answer. He simply recorded it exactly as it was spoken and moved on.
But we know from a letter he wrote to a colleague in London the following week that he took the answer seriously enough to make arrangements to have the Fenwick farmhouse examined. He wrote to the parish constable James Dockerty and asked him to go back to the farmhouse and to lift the flag stone in the kitchen where the boys had said the door was.
James Dockerty did as he was asked. He went out to the farmhouse in the second week of January. He took his brother William with him again because William was a stonemason and knew about lifting stones. And in the report that Dockerty filed with Doctor Bell, he described what they found. The flag stone in the kitchen under the table was slightly larger than the flag stones around it. It was a different color.
It was slightly darker. It had been laid apparently at a different time than the rest of the floor. William Dockati said that in his professional opinion, the surrounding floor was original to the farmhouse, which had been built in the 1830s, but that the central flag stone under the table was older. Much older.
He could not say how much older. He could only say that the stone was of a different composition, and that the way it had been shaped and finished was not consistent with any Scottish stonework of the last several hundred years. They lifted the stone. Underneath it, they found a shallow chamber.
The chamber was about 3 ft deep and roughly the same width as the flag stone above it. The walls of the chamber were lined with dressed stone fitted together without mortar. The bottom of the chamber was paved with smaller stones and in the center of the bottom there was a metal ring set into the stone. They did not pull on the ring.
James Dockati wrote in his report that neither he nor his brother felt inclined to pull on the ring. They looked at it. They discussed it. And then they put the flag stone back in place exactly as it had been. And they left the farmhouse, and they walked out to the horse and cart in silence, and they rode back to the parish, and they did not speak of the ring to anyone else for a very long time. Dr. Bell received the report.
He filed it in his case book. He never followed up on it, and the flag stone, so far as anyone can determine, was never lifted again. The farmhouse was demolished in the 1930s, and the flag stones were, according to the demolition record, carted away for use in local road repairs. Which specific flag stone went where, no one recorded.
The metal ring, the chamber, the door under the kitchen table, is somewhere in the valley now, buried under 30 cm of gravel and asphalt on a country road that runs past the field where the farmer struck stone. On the morning of the 16th of January, 1,93, the Fenwick twins were gone. The ward door was locked from the outside, as it had been every night.
The window was closed and latched from the inside. The night nurse, a woman named Margaret Sinclair, had checked on the boys at midnight, at 2:00 in the morning, and at 4:00 in the morning. On each of those checks, the boys had been sleeping in the bed they shared, curled together, breathing quietly. At 6:00 in the morning, nurse Sinclair went to wake them for breakfast. The bed was empty.
The room was empty. The window was still latched. The door was still locked. And on the wall above the empty bed, there was one final drawing. It had not been there the night before. Nurse Sinclair swore this. She swore it to Dr. Bell. She swore it to the police. She swore it in the official inquiry that followed.
The wall above the bed had been blank at 4 in the morning when she had last looked at it, and at 6:00 in the morning it was covered. What was on the wall was a single enormous image. It was the tower, but it was not the tower as the boys had drawn it before. This tower was not standing. This tower was rising.
It was drawn as if it were coming up out of the ground with soil and stone falling away from its sides. And around the base of the tower, drawn in a ring, were tiny figures, human figures, hundreds of them. All of them facing outward, all of them with their hands raised. And in the sky above the tower, drawn very small but very clear, were two figures.
Two identical figures, two little boys holding hands, rising. The police searched the hospital. They searched the grounds. They searched the surrounding neighborhood. They searched every train station, every road, every port from Edinburgh to Glasgow. They never found the Fenwick twins. Not in 1903, not in 1904. Not ever.
No trace of them was ever recovered. No sighting was ever confirmed. They vanished from that locked ward on the morning of the 16th of January, and they were never seen again by any human being whose name is recorded in any document that survives. The case was officially closed as an unsolved disappearance. A missing person’s file was created.
It was filed away in the Edinburgh Police Archive. And there it sat for almost 70 years until in 1972, a young researcher at the University of Edinburgh going through old hospital records for a thesis on early 20th century pediatric medicine came across the case book of doctor Ronald Bell and read the entries about the Fenwick twins and began slowly, carefully over the course of years to reconstruct what had happened. Her name was Dr.
Fiona Campbell. She published a paper in 1981. The paper was ignored. She published a book in 1994. The book was quietly withdrawn from print by the publisher within 18 months of its release. She died in 2003. Her research materials were, according to her family, donated to the university. According to the university archive, they were never received.
I want you to think for a moment about the buildings in your own town. I want you to think about the old buildings. The ones that have been there longer than anyone can remember. The courthouse, the old library, the train station, the church on the hill, the bank on the main square. The buildings that are always described by the historical societies and the tourism boards as having been built in the late 1800s or the early 1900s by some named architect at some specific cost using some specific materials. And now I want you to ask a
question that the boys in that ward would have asked. I want you to ask, “Are you sure?” Because there is a pattern once you start to look for it in the historical records of towns and cities all across Scotland and all across the British Isles and all across Europe and all across North America and all across the world.
The pattern is this. In town after town, there is a large, elaborate, expensive building that is said to have been constructed in a very short period of time using very few workers at a period when the local economy was very small. The courthouse in a town of 2,000 people that was built in 18 months with eight workers.
The cathedral in a small city that was built by a religious order that has no other buildings anywhere else in the world. The state capital in a frontier town that was built before the railroad reached the town. The boys said that the new towns were built on top of the old cities. They said that the old stones were used without anyone knowing what they had been.
They said that if you know how to look, you can see the old city in the new city, piece by piece, building by building. Look at the old buildings in your town. Look at the ones that seem too grand for the town they are in. Look at the ones whose construction records are incomplete or missing or contradictory. Look at the ones whose stones are of a different color or a different type or a different age than the stones of the buildings around them. Look at the foundations.
Look at the basement. Look at the parts of the buildings that nobody ever explains because nobody ever asks. Look at the doorways. This is what the boys were most specific about, the doorways. They said that the doors of the old city were of a specific size and shape. They said that the doors were tall, taller than modern doors.
They said the doors were arched at the top in a specific pattern of two curves meeting at a point in the middle. And they said that if you know the shape of the old doors, you can find them still in buildings all over the world in places where nobody remembers why the doors are that shape or who built them or when.
Walk through the old part of any European city. Walk through the old part of any American city on the eastern seabboard. Walk through the old part of any city in northern India or in eastern Russia or in western China. Look at the doorways of the oldest buildings. Look at the arched pointed doorways that nobody can quite explain.
The ones that are set into buildings whose upper floors are of a completely different architectural style. The ones that seem, when you look at them carefully, to have been there before the rest of the building. the ones whose stone is of a different color, a different weight, a different age. The boys said that these are the doors of the old city.
They said that most of them are sealed now. They said that some of them are not. There is another detail from the boy’s final conversation that I want to share with you. Dr. Bell asked them why nobody had noticed. He asked them why nobody had looked at the buildings, at the streets, at the strange patterns in the old parts of the cities and understood.
And one of the boys said in the same calm voice he used for everything. You do not look because you were told not to look. You were told when you were very small that the world was made only recently. That everything you see was built by people you have heard of in years you can name for reasons you understand.
You were told this so many times and by so many people that you stopped seeing. When you walk past an old building now, you do not ask when it was built. You know when it was built because someone told you. And the someone who told you had also been told. And the someone who told them had been told.
And back and back and back until you find the ones who did the telling. And they were the ones who buried the city. Dr. Bell asked who they were. And the boy said, “You already know. You will not want to say it, but you already know.” The boys in the ward said that the city was still here. They said it was under.
They said that the stones remembered, and they said that if you looked, you could see it. There is one more piece of the Fenwick case that we have not yet discussed. And this is the piece that when I first came across it, made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. This is the piece that once you know about it, you cannot stop seeing.
The map in the university archive, the map that Professor Fraser recognized, the map from the year 712, that map does not show a single city. It shows a network. It shows a network of cities connected by roads all across what is now Scotland. and beyond Scotland. The edges of the map extend into what is now England and what is now Ireland and what is now the North Sea.
And the map at its edges is not blank. There are notations. There are markers. There are little symbols indicating that the network of cities continues beyond the boundaries of the map itself. The map is not a map of a country. It is a map of a section of a much larger country. A country that, according to the map, covered most of Northern Europe, and that had at its center dozens of cities like the one the boys drew on the walls of the ward.
Cities with round towers, cities with radial street patterns, cities with populations in the tens of thousands. And every one of these cities, according to the map, was located in a place where today there is nothing, no ruin, no foundation, no recorded history. In the case of some of them, there are modern towns and cities built directly on top of the locations marked on the map.
In the case of others, there is only farmland or forest or bog or the sea. Professor Fraser in his final notes made a list of the locations on the map and he attempted to identify each one with a modern place. He was able to make matches for 11 of them. 11 modern cities in the British Isles that sit directly on top of locations marked on the ancient map.
He never published the list, but the list survives in a copy that was made by a colleague of his in 1928, and that copy is now held in a private collection in Abedine. I have seen a photograph of the list. I am not going to read the 11 names out loud in this video, but I will tell you this.
Every single one of the 11 modern cities on the list is famous today for having an unusually old and unusually grand central building, a cathedral, a castle, a tower, a hall, a building that everyone in the city takes for granted, that everyone assumes has always been there, that everyone believes was built by their ancestors in some specific century for some specific purpose.
And in every one of these 11 cities, if you go to the local historical archive and ask when the building was constructed, you will be given a date. And if you look at the sources for the dead, you will find that the sources are in almost every case secondary. They site earlier sources which site earlier sources which site at some point a single original document or a single original chronicle or a single original tradition from which every subsequent date is derived.
And in almost every case, when you go looking for that original document, it is either lost or damaged or held in a private collection or cataloged in a way that makes it very difficult to consult. This is not a conspiracy. This is not a cover up. This is simply what the historical record actually looks like when you touch it directly. It is not solid.
It is a thin crust of paper laid over a great silence. And the boys in the ward at the beginning of the 20th century in a private hospital room in Edinburgh said, “You have built new houses on top of the old ones, but the old ones are underneath. And sometimes when you build, you use the old stones without knowing what they were.
” Consider what this would mean if it were true. Consider it seriously for a moment. Consider what it would mean if every major city in the northern hemisphere was in fact built on the bones of a much older civilization. a civilization that had been technologically capable of building tall stone towers, of laying out cities on radial patterns with precise geometric symmetry, of producing a form of writing that was not yet fully any of the scripts we know today, but that seemed to be an ancestor of several of them at once. Consider what it would
mean if the reason we do not know about this civilization is not that it left no traces, but that its traces are everywhere. And we have been taught from earliest childhood to see them as something else. To see the tower as a cathedral spire built in the year 1100. To see the round wall as a Norman keep built in the year 1300.
To see the domed roof as a Renaissance church built in the year 1500. to see the arch doorway as a Gothic revival built in the year 1800. To see in every case the more recent, the more explainable, the more comfortable, and to look right past what are actually there. The boys said that the trick was in what you were told when you were young.
They said that once you have been told a thing over and over by voices you trust, it becomes very difficult to see anything else. Even when the other thing is standing right in front of you. Even when it is under your feet. Even when it is the very building you are standing in. I want to end with the valley. I want to end where this story began.
In the shallow valley in the Pentland Hills. In the place where the Fenwick farmhouse stood. In the place where two boys were found sitting calmly at a table waiting for the world to catch up to them. The farmhouse is gone. It was demolished in the 1930s. There is no plaque. There is no marker. If you visit the valley today and you know where to look, you can find the outline of the foundation in the grass. That is all.
The stones were carted away. The wood was burned. The land was returned to pasture. But the field where the farmer struck stone in 1998 is still there. And the stones are still there under the soil, uncataloged, unexavated, unstudied. And if the drawings on the walls of that ward are to be believed, and if the map in the university archive is to be believed, and if the words of the two little boys are to be believed, those stones are the base of a tower.
A tower that once stood 60 or 80 m tall at the center of a city of tens of thousands of people in a country that has no name in any history book that has ever been written. There is one final detail from the case that I want to leave you with. It is a detail from nurse Monroe’s journal. It is dated the 15th of January 1,93, which was the day before the boys disappeared.
Nurse Monroe was on the day shift. She had brought the boys their breakfast. She was sitting in the ward watching them eat, and one of the boys, without looking up from his bowl, said to her, “You will not remember us.” Nurse Monroe asked him what he meant. The boy said, “Tomorrow we will go, and after we go in a little while, you will forget that we were here.
Everyone will forget. The doctor will forget. The nurses will forget. The professor will forget. Only the walls will remember.” And when someone paints over the walls, the walls will forget, too. And then it will be as if we were never here at all. Nurse Monroe wrote in her journal that she laughed at this and that she said to the boy, “Of course I will remember you.
How could I ever forget you? And the boy looked up at her finally and he smiled and he said, “You will remember because you are writing it down. That is why we chose you.” The walls of that ward were painted over in 1908. The building was renovated in 1954. The renovation removed the plaster entirely and replaced it with modern materials.
There is no trace anywhere in the current building of anything the Fenwick twins drew. But nurse Monroe’s journal is still there. And Dr. Bell’s case book is still there. And Professor Fraser’s notes, most of them are still there. And the map locked in a cabinet in the basement of the university library is still there. And the stones under the field in the valley in the Pentland Hills are still there.
The boys said that the city was still here. They said it was only quiet. They said the stones remembered. If you go looking, you will find that they were telling the truth. There is one last thing I want to say about the valley. In the summer of 2011, a small team of independent researchers working without any official sponsorship and without any government permission spent 3 days in the valley with ground penetrating radar equipment.
They did not publish their findings in any formal journal. They shared them privately in a document that has circulated quietly among a small community of people who take the Fenwick case seriously. And what they found, according to that document, is that the circular arrangement of stone that the farmer struck in 1998 is not by itself the whole story.
Beneath that circle, extending downward for many meters and outward for many meters in every direction, there are additional structures, chambers, passages, what appear to be, based on the radar, returns, walls, and corridors. a structure, not a small structure, a large one, extending, according to the survey, at least 60 m below the surface of the valley and at least 100 m in horizontal extent from the center of the circle.
There is something under that field. There is something large under that field. And it has been there undisturbed, unreported, unstudied for as long as anyone in the modern world has been aware of it, which as far as any records I have been able to find will tell us is not very long at all. The boys knew. In 1902, in a locked ward in Edinburgh, two seven-year-old boys who had appeared out of a farmhouse in the middle of a Scottish winter, who had lived alone for six weeks and been perfectly well, who spoke in a shared voice and finished each other’s
sentences in the middle of words, knew what was under that field, and they drew it over and over and over until there was no surface left to draw on, and then they vanished. We do not know where they went. We do not know if they went alive. We do not know if they went at all or if they simply stopped being in the ward in the way that a light stops being in a room when it is switched off.
But we know that they were here and we know what they said and we know that most of what they said in the years since has turned out to be true. The Fenwick case is one of dozens. There are similar cases from similar wards in similar hospitals from similar years in Ireland, in Wales, in Norway, in Russia, in the American Midwest, in Northern India, in Western China.
Children who appeared out of nowhere, who drew the same city on the walls, who spoke of the same buried world, who vanished before anyone could explain them. I have been collecting these cases for a long time and every single one of them points in the same direction. There is a next video coming that walks through three of these other cases in detail.
The one from Cork in 1889, the one from Nogarod in 1911, and the one from Kansas in 1934. If you want to see how the pattern repeats, if you want to see how the same drawings appear on different walls in different countries in different centuries, that video is on screen right now. Click it, watch it, and then come back here and tell me in the comments what you think is really going on.
You will not be able to unsee it now. Once you have looked at your own town with the eyes the boys gave us, you cannot go back to seeing it the way you did before. You will walk past the old courthouse. You will look up at the tower on the church. You will stop in front of the strange arched doorway on the side of the town hall that nobody has ever been able to explain.
And you will think of two little boys sitting at a kitchen table in a Scottish valley, calmly waiting for the constable to arrive. The stones remember, the walls remember, and now so do
