The recent case of a man allegedly abusing and abandoning an elderly German shepherd at a Pembroke Pines shopping center has left many people shaken. Stories of animal cruelty are always painful to read, but when they involve a senior dog already in poor health, the sense of heartbreak and outrage deepens. This incident, captured on video and detailed by local authorities, raises difficult questions about responsibility, empathy, and what it truly means to care for an animal in its final years. For anyone who cares about animal welfare or follows Florida animal cruelty laws, this case is a sobering reminder that vigilance and compassion are still urgently needed.
According to the Pembroke Pines Police Department, the incident unfolded on a Wednesday morning at a shopping center where Sedano’s supermarket is located in the 10300 block of Pines Boulevard. Investigators say 60-year-old Humberto Exposito was at the location making a delivery with a box truck. During that delivery, police state that Exposito was recorded on video throwing a 13-year-old male German shepherd named Nico several feet from the back of the truck. Authorities describe the dog as elderly and already in fragile condition.
Once the delivery was completed, officers say Exposito returned to the truck while Nico remained on the ground outside. The account provided by police emphasizes that there was no visible attempt to check on the dog, to help it up, or to ensure its safety. Instead, investigators say the dog was simply left behind in the parking area. This kind of abandonment is particularly concerning because a senior dog, especially one with health challenges, has very limited ability to fend for itself in a public place.
Police say Nico was left without basic necessities such as food, water, shelter, or protection from the environment. For any animal, that degree of neglect is serious. For a 13-year-old German shepherd, it can be life-threatening. Elderly dogs often struggle with mobility, temperature regulation, and chronic medical conditions. Being left injured and alone in a shopping center parking lot meant Nico was vulnerable not only to discomfort and fear but also to further harm.

Authorities reported that Nico was eventually taken into the care of Broward County Animal Care. There, the dog began receiving medical evaluation and treatment. The details that emerged from the shelter underscore just how unwell Nico already was by the time help arrived. A spokesperson for Broward County Animal Care told Local 10 News that Nico arrived malnourished and with matted hair. Shelter staff also observed signs of advanced hip dysplasia, a painful joint condition common in large and aging dogs.
One staff member described Nico’s condition in particularly stark terms, saying the dog is in poor condition, has cancer, is unable to walk, and is not doing well. All of these observations suggest that Nico had not only been abandoned in the immediate moment at the shopping center but that he had likely been struggling with serious health issues for a significant period of time. Hearing that an animal in such visible distress was then allegedly thrown from a truck makes the story even harder to process.

Investigators later located Exposito, who they say was arrested in connection with the incident. Pembroke Pines police report that he is facing one count of aggravated animal cruelty, one count of abandonment of an animal, and one count of confinement of an animal without sufficient air exchange. These charges reflect Florida’s legal framework for addressing serious animal abuse cases, especially when there is evidence of intentional harm or neglect.
Following the arrest, Exposito appeared before a judge in a Broward County courtroom. According to the reporting, the judge set his bond at 12,000 dollars and added a significant restriction. Exposito was prohibited from possessing any animal, a condition that is often imposed in cases where a person is accused of mistreating animals, in order to prevent further harm while the legal process continues. Authorities also emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing, which means more information may come to light as the case proceeds.
Cases like this often leave community members grappling with a mixture of sadness, anger, and helplessness. It is painful to imagine a senior dog, already weakened by age, cancer, and hip dysplasia, experiencing both physical abuse and abandonment. I found this detail striking: Nico was not a young, energetic animal, but a 13-year-old German shepherd in obvious need of care, comfort, and medical support. Seeing that such a vulnerable dog was reportedly treated in this way underscores how important it is for bystanders to speak up when they see something that seems wrong.
There is also the broader question of what can be done to prevent similar incidents. While not every act of cruelty will be captured on video, public awareness plays a powerful role. Recognizing signs of neglect, such as extreme weight loss, severely matted fur, or obvious difficulty walking, can prompt concerned individuals to contact authorities or local animal control agencies. Animal shelters and rescue organizations often work closely with law enforcement, as Broward County Animal Care did in Nico’s case, to ensure that animals in crisis receive both medical attention and a measure of safety.
For people who share their lives with older pets, this story may feel particularly raw. Senior animals frequently face complex health issues from arthritis and mobility problems to cancer and organ disease. Caring for them can be emotionally and financially demanding, yet many find deep meaning in providing comfort and dignity during those final years. When an elderly dog is instead subjected to apparent mistreatment, it cuts against that instinct to protect and honor the bond humans often feel with their animals.
There is no easy way to reconcile the image of Nico’s suffering with a sense of justice or closure, especially while the legal process is still playing out. What can be said with certainty is that local authorities treated the video as serious evidence, that Nico is now under the care of professionals at Broward County Animal Care, and that formal animal cruelty charges have been filed. These steps do not erase what happened, but they demonstrate that the community, through its institutions, recognizes animal cruelty as a grave matter worthy of investigation and legal scrutiny.
Ultimately, this incident in Pembroke Pines is a reminder that compassion toward animals is not just a private virtue but a public responsibility. When people report suspected abuse, support local shelters, or choose to treat elderly and sick animals with patience and kindness, they help build a culture that does not look away from suffering. Nico’s story is deeply distressing, and the details emerging from the shelter suggest that his prognosis is uncertain at best. Yet, the fact that his situation came to light, that he is receiving care, and that charges have been filed, serves as a call for continued awareness and humane treatment for all animals, especially those who are old, frail, and unable to defend themselves.
