Prince William has made a rare reference to his younger brother, Prince Harry, in a recent television appearance. The brief but significant mention comes amid years of strained relations between the brothers following Harry’s decision to step back from royal duties in 2020. While Prince William has largely avoided speaking publicly about their relationship, his latest remarks have drawn widespread attention from royal observers and the public alike.
A Relationship Marked by Change
Prince William and Prince Harry were once known for their close bond, especially during their early years growing up in the royal family. However, after Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced their decision to step back from senior royal duties and relocate to North America, tensions between the brothers reportedly grew.
Harry addressed aspects of their relationship in his 2023 memoir Spare, published by Penguin Random House. In the book, he discussed their shared childhood, the challenges of royal life, and moments of disagreement. While Harry spoke openly in his memoir and various interviews, William remained publicly silent, refraining from commenting on the claims.
William’s Subtle Reference to Harry
In a recent episode of the Apple TV+ series The Reluctant Traveller, Prince William spoke candidly about his life, his vision for the future of the monarchy, and his hopes for his family. While the program did not focus on his relationship with Harry, William made a brief remark that included his brother in the context of their shared experiences growing up in the royal family.
“I hope we don’t go back to some of the practices in the past that Harry and I had to grow up in. And I’ll do everything I can to make sure we don’t regress in that situation,” he said, according to Express UK.
The comment is notable because it marks one of the few times William has mentioned Harry by name in a public forum since 2020. It reflects his desire to address certain aspects of royal traditions and how they may evolve when he eventually ascends the throne.
A Measured Response
Royal commentators have highlighted that William’s mention of Harry was brief and measured. Speaking to The Mirror, royal expert Jennie Bond explained that the inclusion of Harry was likely natural, given the topic of their shared upbringing. She emphasized that William’s reference should not be over-interpreted as a sign of immediate reconciliation but acknowledged that it suggests Harry remains part of William’s reflections on the past.
“The mention of Harry is indeed fleeting and I think it would be wrong to spend much time talking about it. But I suppose it does show that William hasn’t blocked his brother completely from his mind,” Bond said.
She added that it was only natural for William to include Harry when discussing his childhood and the institutional practices they both experienced as members of the royal family.
The Current State of the Brothers’ Relationship
According to multiple reputable media outlets, including the BBC and The Guardian, Prince William and Prince Harry have had limited public interaction since Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal life. Their last joint appearance was at the funeral of their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022, and at the coronation of King Charles III in May 2023, which Harry attended without Meghan.
While there have been occasional signs of polite gestures—such as a birthday message shared by William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, on social media—there has been no public indication of a full reconciliation. Both brothers have focused on their respective duties and personal lives: William continues his work as Prince of Wales and prepares for his future role as king, while Harry lives with his family in California and continues philanthropic and media projects through Archewell Foundation.
Why William’s Comment Matters
Even though William’s mention of Harry was brief, royal watchers see it as symbolically significant. Over the past few years, the Prince of Wales has maintained a carefully controlled public image, particularly regarding family matters. His decision to acknowledge Harry, even indirectly, in a televised program suggests a willingness to reflect on their shared past.
Moreover, William’s statement focused on how he hopes to shape the monarchy’s future. By referencing “practices in the past,” he indicated a desire to modernize aspects of royal life that affected both him and Harry during their upbringing. This aligns with broader conversations within the royal family about evolving traditions to remain relevant in contemporary society.
Public Interest Remains High
The dynamic between William and Harry remains a subject of intense public interest, especially following the global attention drawn by Harry and Meghan’s interviews, documentaries, and Harry’s memoir. Every small development—whether a public comment, a gesture at a royal event, or a joint statement—sparks debate among royal fans and commentators.
Their relationship is more than a family matter; it also has implications for the public image of the monarchy. As future king, William represents the institution’s continuity, while Harry, living independently in the United States, has offered a candid and often critical perspective on royal life.
Looking Ahead
While there is no official information indicating that a reconciliation is imminent, both brothers have occasionally demonstrated gestures of respect during major royal events. Observers note that time and shared milestones—such as family events or future royal occasions—may play a role in whether their relationship improves.
William’s recent remark on The Reluctant Traveller does not signal a major shift, but it shows that Harry remains part of his story. Whether this acknowledgment leads to further dialogue between the brothers remains to be seen.
