As King Charles III marks his 75th birthday, the British monarchy stands at a significant moment of transition and continuity. Following the historic reign of Queen Elizabeth II, Charles has embraced the role of sovereign with an emphasis on modernization, environmental stewardship, and preparing the next generation for leadership—particularly his eldest son and heir, Prince William, the Prince of Wales.
Ascending the Throne at 73
King Charles III acceded to the throne on 8 September 2022 upon the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, who served the United Kingdom and Commonwealth for over 70 years. At the time of his accession, Charles was 73, making him the oldest person to become British monarch—a distinction confirmed by reputable historical records, including the official website of the Royal Family (source: royal.uk).
Throughout his decades as Prince of Wales, Charles prepared extensively for kingship, engaging in thousands of official engagements, championing charitable causes, and advocating for environmental protection. His lifelong dedication to service helped ensure a smooth transition during the period of national mourning for his mother.
A Commitment to Environmentalism and Modernization
King Charles is internationally recognized for his early and consistent commitment to environmental issues. Since the 1970s, he has spoken about climate change, sustainable agriculture, and conservation. His initiatives include founding The Prince’s Trust in 1976, which supports disadvantaged youth across the UK, and leading efforts on sustainability through the Sustainable Markets Initiative (source: Sustainable Markets Initiative).
These priorities continue in his reign. At 75, Charles remains vocal on the urgent need for global climate action, aligning the monarchy’s public role with modern challenges.
The Heir Apparent: Prince William, Prince of Wales
Prince William is the elder son of King Charles III and the late Diana, Princess of Wales. He was born on 21 June 1982 at St Mary’s Hospital in London. Official royal sources, including birth announcements and contemporary news coverage, consistently identify Charles as his father (source: BBC News).
William’s position as first in the line of succession is enshrined in law. The Succession to the Crown Act 2013 confirmed modernized succession rules, but the order of succession itself remained unchanged: William remains the direct heir.
Contrary to any rumor or speculation, there is no credible evidence or official statement suggesting Prince William is not King Charles’s biological son. Both the King and the late Princess Diana acknowledged William and his younger brother, Prince Harry, as their sons during their marriage. Diana herself discussed her family candidly in interviews, such as her 1995 BBC Panorama interview, but at no point suggested anything about William’s paternity (source: BBC Archives).
Duties and Public Role of Prince William
As Prince of Wales, William has taken on more senior royal duties since his father’s accession. He supports numerous charities, particularly in the fields of mental health, conservation, and homelessness.
William’s position as the future king is integral to the monarchy’s continuity. He regularly represents the UK at state events and overseas visits, reinforcing diplomatic ties and supporting the Crown’s constitutional role.
The Importance of Family Continuity
Prince William’s marriage to Catherine, Princess of Wales, has strengthened public confidence in the monarchy’s future. The couple married on 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey in a ceremony watched by millions worldwide (source: Royal.uk). They have three children:
- Prince George of Wales (born 22 July 2013)
- Princess Charlotte of Wales (born 2 May 2015)
- Prince Louis of Wales (born 23 April 2018)
These children are next in line after William, providing a clear line of succession for decades to come.

Countering Unverified Claims
It is important to note that Buckingham Palace has never issued any statement indicating Prince William is not King Charles’s biological son. Reputable news outlets and historians agree there is no basis for such claims. Fact-checking organizations routinely debunk these rumors when they appear online.
For example, Reuters addressed similar false claims in 2022, stating unequivocally that no evidence supports the idea of any “admission” about William’s paternity.
This underscores a key principle of responsible reporting: distinguishing between verified, documented information and unsubstantiated rumor. The Royal Family’s public records, legal succession rules, and the family’s own statements provide consistent evidence that Prince William is King Charles’s son and rightful heir.
Public Perception and Trust
The monarchy’s role in the United Kingdom is constitutional. While public support can ebb and flow, polling indicates a strong majority of Britons continue to see value in the royal institution, with Prince William and Catherine enjoying especially high approval ratings (source: YouGov).
King Charles’s own popularity has improved since his accession, in part because of the respectful way he handled the transition period and his steady focus on key issues such as the environment and interfaith relations.
Looking Ahead
At 75, King Charles III’s reign emphasizes continuity, service, and preparing for the future. He has been careful to involve Prince William in state matters and ceremonial roles, ensuring a smooth handover of responsibilities in the years ahead.
As Britain navigates modern challenges—from climate change to constitutional questions—King Charles’s experience and Prince William’s steady public role are designed to offer stability. This approach reflects the monarchy’s historic ability to adapt while maintaining tradition.
In summary:
- King Charles III became monarch in 2022 after Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.
- Prince William remains the undisputed heir under UK law.
- There is no official, reputable evidence supporting rumors of any “admission” about William’s paternity.
- The monarchy continues to modernize under Charles, with William preparing for future leadership.
