It sounds like the start of a joke—but in northern France, it actually happened.
Customers enjoying a quiet drink at a bar in Chantilly, just outside Paris, were sent running for cover when a racehorse burst through the door and began knocking over chairs and tables.
The unexpected visitor, a young filly still saddled and ready for a race, turned an ordinary afternoon into chaos within seconds.

A Real-Life Punchline
Security camera footage from the PMU bar and bookmakers shows the horse pushing the door open and confidently trotting inside, heading straight toward the betting counter.
Patrons and staff can be seen scrambling for safety, abandoning drinks and fleeing the scene as the animal moved through the bar. What should have been a calm setting quickly turned into a surreal spectacle—one usually reserved for jokes rather than real life.
How the Horse Got There
The filly’s trainer, Jean-Marie Beguigne, later explained how the extraordinary situation unfolded.
According to Beguigne, the horse had thrown her rider near the Chantilly Race Course stables, located less than a mile away.
“Between the track and the stables, her rider fell off,” he told Ouest France. “The filly escaped by going on to the road, crossing a roundabout, and then entering this bar. It is all quite exceptional.”
Straight to the Betting Counter
PMU bars—short for Pari Mutuel Urbain—are common in France and serve as both bars and official betting venues for horse racing. They feature betting counters and screens showing live races.
Perhaps fittingly, the runaway filly made a beeline for the betting area.
“She pushed the door open and raced straight for the betting corner,” said bar owner Stéphane Jasmin. “Then she turned around, breaking a table and chairs. We’ve never seen anything like it.”

No Injuries, No Trauma
Despite the dramatic entrance, no one was injured during the incident—including the horse.
Beguigne confirmed that the filly showed no signs of stress or injury afterward and appeared calm once the situation was under control. He declined to reveal her name but noted that she had “a penchant for escape.”
Still, even for an adventurous horse, her destination came as a surprise.
“It’s incredible that she made for a PMU bar,” the trainer said.
A Story Locals Won’t Forget
The footage quickly spread online, with viewers amused by the irony of a racehorse wandering into a betting bar of all places.
For the patrons who fled mid-drink, it was likely a moment of panic. For everyone else, it became one of those rare stories that sound made up—until you see the video.
As it turns out, sometimes the oldest jokes really do come true.
