Earlier this month in San Antonio, an officer from San Antonio Animal Care Services received a report about a cat stuck in a storm drain.
The call didn’t include many details—only that a small animal might be trapped.
Officer Rosemarie Tutak immediately drove to the location to investigate.
When she arrived, however, she couldn’t see or hear anything at first. The street looked quiet, and the storm drains appeared empty.
But the situation quickly changed.

Children Step Forward With Important Information
While the officer searched the area, three young children and their father stepped outside their home and approached her.
Earlier that day, the kids had spotted a tiny kitten inside a storm drain down the street. Worried that the animal might not survive without help, they decided to do something simple but meaningful.
They wrote a small note warning passersby that a kitten was trapped nearby.
The handwritten message was their way of making sure someone would come to help.
Following the Note
Officer Tutak walked over to the location where the children had placed the note.
As she got closer, she began hearing faint sounds.
Soft little meows echoed from below the metal cover of the drain.
After lifting the manhole cover and looking inside, she finally saw the source of the cries—a frightened baby Calico Cat curled deep inside the drain.
The children and their father watched from across the street, hoping the rescue would succeed.

A Careful Rescue Plan
The storm drain was too deep for the officer to safely climb down.
Instead, she quickly created a simple rescue plan.
She tied a blanket to a rope and gently lowered it into the drain, hoping the kitten might grab onto it.
For a moment, everyone waited.
Then something incredible happened.
The tiny kitten clung tightly to the blanket.
Slowly and carefully, Officer Tutak pulled the rope back up—bringing the kitten safely out of the drain.
A Hungry But Safe Kitten
Once the kitten was safely on the ground, the officer immediately offered her some food.
The hungry baby devoured it eagerly, clearly exhausted from the ordeal.
After checking to make sure the kitten wasn’t injured, Officer Tutak invited the children to come meet the little animal they had helped rescue.
The kids had already chosen a name for her.
They decided to call the kitten Mimi.
A New Beginning for Mimi
After the rescue, Mimi was taken back to the shelter operated by San Antonio Animal Care Services so she could rest and recover.
The staff gave her time to decompress and made sure she was healthy.
Before long, Mimi captured someone’s attention.
An adopter soon stepped forward, eager to give the little kitten a loving home once she completed her veterinary care.

The Real Heroes
While many people praised the officer for the successful rescue, the shelter staff saw the story differently.
In their eyes, the real heroes were the three children.
They were the ones who noticed an animal in danger.
They were the ones who cared enough to act.
And their simple handwritten note made sure help arrived in time.

A Small Act That Made a Big Difference
Sometimes saving a life doesn’t require special tools or training.
Sometimes it begins with compassion.
Three children in San Antonio saw a tiny animal in trouble and refused to ignore it.
Because of that small act of kindness, a frightened little Calico Cat named Mimi now has a second chance at a safe and loving life.
