Cats are often seen as independent animals. Many spend hours exploring outdoors and seem perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. Because of this reputation, people sometimes assume cats require very little maintenance.
But for some cats—especially those with long or thick fur—regular grooming is essential.
Without it, their coats can quickly become tangled and painfully matted.
That’s exactly what happened to a cat named Hidey, whose heartbreaking condition shocked animal rescuers and reminded many people of the hidden struggles elderly pet owners can face.
A Cat Found in Terrible Condition
Hidey’s story came to light after her elderly owner, who was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, was moved to a nursing home.
During the transition, relatives discovered the neglected cat still living in the home.
Concerned about her condition, they contacted the Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center in Pittsburgh to help.
When rescuers first saw Hidey, they were stunned.
Her fur had become so severely tangled that it formed thick rope-like clumps across her entire body.
Some of the mats were six to eight inches long.
From a distance, the cat’s coat looked less like fur and more like long dreadlocks—so unusual that rescuers said she resembled an octopus.
Animal experts believe the cat had likely gone up to two years without proper grooming.
The Worst Matting Rescuers Had Ever Seen
Veterinarian Jenn Levitzki helped care for Hidey and documented the process of freeing the cat from the massive knots of fur.
After examining the animal, she described the condition as the most severe matting she had ever encountered.
“Hidey has the worst matting I have ever seen—she has dreadlocks,” Levitzki explained.
Because the tangled fur was so thick and tight against her skin, Hidey had to be sedated so the veterinary team could safely remove it.
This ensured the process would not cause her additional stress or pain.
Pounds of Fur Removed
The grooming process was far from simple.
Veterinary staff carefully shaved away layer after layer of tightly woven hair.
According to the rescue center, the cat had pounds of intertwined fur covering her body.
Once the mats were removed, the transformation was dramatic.
Underneath the heavy coat was a much smaller, healthier-looking cat.
Shelter staff later shared that Hidey immediately appeared more comfortable after the procedure.
Without the painful weight of matted fur pulling at her skin, she could finally move freely again.
How Severe Matting Happens
Severe matting like Hidey experienced does not happen overnight.
It develops gradually when loose hairs become tangled and form tight knots. Over time, these knots collect more hair, dirt, and oils, eventually forming thick clumps that pull tightly on the skin.
For cats with long coats, regular brushing is critical to prevent this buildup.

Instead of remaining in a shelter, she was rehomed with a distant relative of her former owner.
The family member agreed to care for the cat and ensure she receives proper grooming in the future.
While her previous owner could no longer look after her due to the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, the story ended with Hidey finally receiving the attention she needed.
